  • I didn't know cannabis was a herb, or is it an herb?   And anywhere in Thailand is a considerably safer place to be than London, Nottingham, Manchester, Birmingham, Coventry ad infinitum.

Correct.   Thailand has very strict immigration rules and no tolerance for Sub-saharans or South Asians overstaying their short welcome.   Seems to be working very well for them.

Yeah, and now those people from those slums are coming to Thailand with a DTV visa. No money required.

Who would have thought - tourists consuming alcohol and cannabis are getting into serious trouble when they get 'mentally deranged'.  The sort of idiocy that makes a person think it is OK to try super strong cannabis, which they have not or rarely ever done in their lives, while drunk in Pattaya - is what makes them think because it is legal here they can take a bag load of it home with them.  Care Factor = Sympathy = Zero.  Same as those who never ride a bike and then come here and do so - without insurance or licence.

Those who regularly consume cannabis do so for medical/social reasons and know what they are doing.  2 week millionaires should be banned from getting it - and I agree with what the Thai Govt has done to stop that happening. Any local Expat with reasonable experience will be able to find a Dr who will prescribe it for pain or anxiety or any relevant 'medical ailment'.

Perhaps if UK state pensions were not frozen the aging population could afford the insurance for their road vehicles? Hmmm

The British Embassy has issued a stern warning to Brits residing in Pattaya, highlighting a worrying rise in consular emergencies. At a reception held at the Courtyard by Marriott, Joanne Finnamore-Crorkin, the consul for consular affairs, addressed British expats and Thai officials, stating that UK nationals facing distress are increasing rapidly.

Key concerns include an ageing expat population, a surge in uninsured traffic incidents, and a notable rise in drug-related arrests, especially involving cannabis.

Finnamore-Crorkin announced the pending appointment of George Barrie as the honorary consul for Pattaya, who will assist in handling these emergencies. She emphasised the growing issue of traffic accidents, particularly motorcycles, and urged Brits to ensure they have appropriate travel insurance and valid wills.

Another pressing issue is drug-related offences. The consul noted an alarming rise in holidaymakers attempting to leave Thailand with cannabis, mistakenly believing it’s legal elsewhere.

“Cannabis remains a controlled herb here,” she warned, stressing that offenders could face severe consequences abroad.

Finnamore-Crorkin also highlighted the complex bureaucracy in handling road accidents in Thailand, pointing out that no single agency is responsible. This task often requires embassy officials to liaise with a variety of local authorities, including police, hospitals, and immigration officials.

She expressed gratitude to Pattaya's British community, including ex-service groups and businesses, for their consistent support in assisting the embassy, as reported by Pattaya Mail.

On a more positive note, she mentioned the upcoming 170th anniversary of UK-Thailand diplomatic relations in 2025, underscoring a history of collaboration rooted in trade, tourism, and shared security values.

The embassy continues to urge all Brits in Thailand to register for travel advice and remain informed about local laws and risks.

Seems strange that they didn’t know it was illegal, but they decided to fly it to an airport that wasn’t in their home country

Because the police don't.  It's always the farang's fault even when he's stationery.

Might be illegally parked though...

Useful information for once.

As a UK Citizen living in Cambodia, as from today I am now registered with the British Embassy in Phnom Penh  to receive details by email, especially in relation to safety issues and warnings.

None  of the people who try to smuggle numerous kilos into the UK  from Thailand do it because they believe it might be legal elsewhere! I’m sorry. It’s illegal in most countries and if you live in of the countries where it is legal, you know about that.

So it's not a warning ABOUT Thailand, it's a warning to the MORONS that come here and break the law thinking they can always bribe their way out of it...

Botanically it is a herb.  No development of a woody trunk as you would have in a typical tree or bush.

Thanks so much for clearing that up. I worked as a botanist and seed gatherer. For most people, including me, a herb is a plant with healing properties, and that can include trees and mushrooms. You want to be difficult? Go ahead. Stop being "botancal".

What a complete insult to appoint George Barrie as the honorary consul for Pattaya!  Have they run out of double-barrelled applicants?

There's no question that the two biggest hazards in Pattaya are the ladyboy community, and motorbike accidents. I'm sure anyone could find dozens of other ways to get in trouble but those are the two to really watch out for.

Stay away from ladyboys at all costs and if you're riding a motorbike make sure you have lots of experience, and very a good helmet, and drive very carefully.

Finnamore-Crorkin also highlighted the complex bureaucracy in handling road accidents in Thailand, pointing out that no single agency is responsible. This task often requires embassy officials to liaise with a variety of local authorities, including police, hospitals, and immigration officials.

What actually happens when any legal aliens were hit by the cars  and injured serious enough(unable to speak who they are, where they live etc) while walking down the street?

Does the police check their belongings and identify the wounded?

In case of their deaths on the spot, report to the local immigration, and then to the closest diplomatic posts of their home countries?

yes, and no, the main difference is that you can risk assess more effectively in the uk cities, there are areas and activities that will make you less safe, avoid these and your day to day life is very safe. compared this to thai cities where you literally have to be on your guard all the time because the roads are so dangerous, whether you're in a vehicle or a pedestrian.

Mugged twice in my life, once in Manila, Philippines, once in London, UK. By any standard Thailand is a safe place for foreigners.

British Embassy statement in a nutshell for those in a hurry:  We don't like the extra work we're having to do.  Behave yourselves!

Yes - arranging cocktail parties for the 'invited few'!!   How many people on here received an invitation to that event??   I certainly didn't!!

In British English, the "h" in "herb" is pronounced, while in American English, it is typically silent.
