Cheap gym for walking

Featured Replies

I know I have asked this before, but has anything changed? I am 78 and getting slower. I want to play golf again, but I need to walk better. I want a gym that has a running machine (not that I will ever do that), so I can walk gently for a period of time. Probably no more than 20 minutes max to start.

So it needs to be cheap (or at that end of the market) but with something to look at while I'm walking. A TV or even a view of the street to occupy my attention. I used Tony's for years (life membership, best value deal I have ever had), but that was years ago.

I live just off Thepprasit but can travel.

Look forward to your suggestions.

IIRC - the Mike shopping mall (maybe Royal Garden Plaza too) still has stairs, so no need to be lazy and use the escalators.

Edit: Forgot to say, I think you are doing a good thing and I wish you luck. Happy golfing!

The one thing I didn't mention is that I have balance issues, so having hand rails on either sides helps.

I'll mention two issues with walking outside.

Some parts of Thailand are heavily polluted during certain seasons. During those times it is best to avoid any outdoors exercise, including walking.

Also, hot and humid weather can be an issue for some people. Even if not a health hazard, it's a matter of convenience, and trying to find a way to exercise without overheating is legitimate.

Gyms are good for short time visitors; for expats it may make more sense, financially and otherwise, to purchase a treadmill and an air purifier, and to walk in the comfort of their home.

Well, I have walking issues, but I am 78, and my problem is in my mind. I am scared of steps or escalators, and even getting into a car is a problem for me

Walking inside at a gym can have other threat's like getting to know people, and also see other people exercise so there is more aspects to it than just walking. Thailand is not especially suitable for everyone to just go outside and make a walk out of many reasons.

Surprised you call out someone's else thread for lame

Not to mention the added risks of:

•being caught in expected tropical storms, downpours and lightning strikes

•lack of toilet facilities in an unexpected bilious attack
•hit by an errant motorist - or motorcyclist using the footpath
•attacked/harassed/robbed by one or more of Pattaya’s many druggos,  drunks or other random criminals/lowlifes.

A cool, comfortable, safe walking environment at home is by far the most sensible and convenient location for the serious walker/jogger - in addition to / instead of joining/finding a gym.

Home treadmills can be purchased for as little as 1,600 baht.

Unlike walking on flat streets/beaches, the incline is easy adjusted on a treadmill to add more intensity, gain more strength and burn more calories for those with inabilities to jog/run.

Yes, Jomtien beach front looks good for that. Presuming all the construction has been cleared up.

Battle and Conquer Gym,  top ofSoi 5 Pratumnak, plenty of walking machines in there, street view, many older guys too.Right on the.street for views, happy place it seems.

Hua HiN have the best beach to walk every morning. You will see many of the same people at the same times, and that’s nice actually.

For home gym I recommend rowing machine and ski-erg and also treadmill, but hard to get any good ones for less than 20k

sorry no suggestions that match your criteria but if you choose a gym, ask to speak to the owner and try to get a discount if you are only planning to use the treadmill and not the weight machines.

but also consider reststance training.

Have you considered a peddle powered wheelchair?

It's a bit far from Pattaya.

Not many people have the space for these machines.

What's the term they use in psychology for "Fear of Outdoor Walking"?

The term used for preferring brisk walking in a cool environment (with all conveniences in immediate proximity) for a 78 year old person, wanting to exercise in the tropics is called "common sense".

You're welcome.

As I said before, I'm 78 too. I have no problem with escalators, but steps are something I try to avoid. I used to pay my 3BB bill at Thepprasit, but as there are a couple of steps, I now go to Big C Extra.

I'm 71, living in Hua Hin, I use the Dern gym, average 6km every day

I'm with you, 71, average 6km a day, take different routes, meet people, most Thais now recognise me, even have coffee stops...why waste time, and money at a boring gym.

I can't suggest a Gym as I use the one in my Condo, but to pass the 2-2.5 hour walk, I take my Ipad and either pre-load something to watch or fire up YouTube.

Gym does have TVs in front of the treadmills but the only channels are news channels and after the first 20 mins or so you've already seen everything and end up watching the same news being repeated over-and-over.

Depends on the gym. A/C is nice when working out, having weights and exercise machines is convenient. Sauna and steam room is fantastic. Big pool for lounging. Mix it up with beach walks.

No idea how really restricted you are bu,t as long as you can walk from cart path to green, if you take a cart then there should be no reason not to play golf?

Only issue would be if very wet and cart paths only and some courses may have elevated tee boxes.

Wish you luck in getting back into it

Go to Makro South Pattaya? and walk around for 20 mins. No joining, no fees.

Not for you but if anyone else has mobility problems use a trolley as a walker.
