Is Thailand Done With the Shinawatras?

Is Thailand Done With the Shinawatras?

Persistent political turmoil has a way of blurring the lines between change and continuity. So it is with Thailand, where veteran politician Anutin Charnvirakul was elected prime minister in a parliamentary vote Friday, convincingly defeating the ruling coalition’s preferred candidate. Anutin will be the country’s third leader in as many years.

His election caps off a week of drama and intrigue that began when the powerful Constitutional Court ousted his predecessor, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, ruling she had committed an ethical lapse during a leaked phone call in June with Cambodia’s former leader, Hun Sen. That incident prompted Anutin’s conservative Bhumjaithai party to withdraw from the coalition and position itself as an alternative to Paetongtarn’s Pheu Thai party.

Known as a well-connected dealmaker, Anutin was able to secure the support of the largest political party in the lower house of the National Assembly, the progressive People’s Party. He is expected to be sworn in in the coming days.

Thaksin's plans for Thailand's future are flawless and impressing convincing

As a political leader of this Kingdom he would be a good choice.

However there are too many powerful people on the other side who will envy him.

Is Thailand Done With the Shinawatras?

I guess we'll find out when all of the Shin clan show up in private jets with heart monitors, masks, crutches, bed-pans, casts, and neck braces with the expectation that their 14th floor penthouse remand hospital suites will be ready for their occupation while they await their pardons.  In the meanwhile, it's the life of jet-setters in Dubyai, London, and perhaps Monaco.

:crying: But I just want to be able to spend my last few years with my grandchildren and my children in Thailand.

 Yeah, of course, we see how that works.  I gotta think that "Fool me once...," is even something a Thai with a 2 digit IQ can understand.  In the meanwhile, each time my wife sees one of "The Clan" on TV I can tell as I hear, "KWAI!!!," from across the house.

Neither has the housekeeper, driver or gardener...... although being very wealthy for a short period sometime back.

If Thaksin does not return before the court case and he is found guilty, then he will not return and it is just a matter of time before they fade away because PT will be destroyed at the next election.  If he comes back and is found not guilty, he and the family will remain a thorn in their sides. The Shinawatras have a lot of axes to grind after 3 direct and 3 indirect PMs they put in place were removed by Courts/Coups. IMO the best thing for the country is for Thaksin to stay away and for the family to focus on their businesses and wealth generation.

Speaking of the next election, IMO it will become more of a 2 Party system going forward. Anutin will form an alliance between Bhumjaithai with the Monarchy and Military Parties, and over time and several elections Bhumjaithai will 'absorb' those other Parties (Formal Coalitions) and they will become the main 'conservative' Party.  Peoples Party will dominate at the next elections, and over time they will do the same and absorb PT and others and become the main 'progressive' Party. IMO at some time in the future, like most western democracies are now, it will become a choice between two basic options - the Conservatives and the Progressives. Thaksin and PT will be a distant memory.

Thailand is done period! Nada...Electing corrupt Anutin and his corrupt party guilty of money laundering and other criminal election interference was a huge mistake for Thailand. It just does not get any worse than this. It all down hill from here.

You still have to deal with the rest of the clan

Sorry, cannot post the family tree like I thought, wrong file description.

 Why?

- To buy some sperm to have more kids / potential PM's?

- To donate?

Maybe his plan is to have his grandchildren move in with him with play pool at klong prem prison?

I think this misses the point. It's not just Thaksin and his clan that have been repeatedly deposed, despite winning majority elections, it happened to the People's Party too (Move Forward) in the last election. And it's exactly the same group of people that are always thwarting the majority of the electorate. Thailand does not have a functioning democracy. And it's pie in the sky naivete to think, come January, there will be a chance to elect a party that can form a government that truly represents the aspirations of the majority over the wealthy minority establishment. So even if Thaksin doesn't come back and the rest of the clan scoot off to where ever - Thaksin was never the real problem. The problem remains.

I think Thaksin was good for the country at one time.

However, corruption under him was taken to a new level, in the past back handers would be 10% of a contract typically a one year contract, under his rule it was common for 10 year contracts to be given out and massively increasing the corruption payments.

Are you feeling ok or did you forget this smiley: 😜 ?

This is but a small setback

He will be back!
PTP is the 2nd largest party just short of 10 seats to equal the largest party PP

Corruption to new levels?
Study your Thai history and reference those governments that came before and after him.

Summed up nicely. Thaksin is deemed so dangerous because he is popular and yet rich/ elite at the same time. A deadly combination.

In a way he is like Trump.

I experienced the 10 year contract corruption firsthand.  I wasn’t around before that.

A realistic discussion of  the future of the Shinawatras is impossible here due to the rules.

I hope Thaksin is so gone, but I also hope Anutin is gone soon too... as he is unhelpful to the future of Thailand.

Even if Thaksin doesn't come back, there is still his ex- wife, Potjaman, a powerful, behind the scenes figure, plus his daughter, and of course the enormous wealth the family possesses.

So the Shinawats will still be around, and cosying up to the elites to ensure their wealth remains intact. So Pheu Thai will never be progressive in my view, the People's Party are on their own.

Many posters here think the PP's popularity will ensure they will do well in the next election.

I hope so but Anuthin will surely milk the current surge in nationalism after the Thai- Cambodia spat, and if he can successfully restore peace with the border opened, trade resumed and Cambodian migrant workers returning to work in Thailand, then Bhumjaithai could gain more seats.

The clan brought some good things, which we cant deny.

But now, the younger generation have seen trhe light' and we can only hope that the dinosaurs either let democracy follow its course, or die trying to stop it.

Let's see what happens as Anutin says he will leave the PM after four months-LOL. The Dust has not settled on Thaksin yet.
