UK passport application acceptable proof of local address

Featured Replies

I am about to apply for a new UK passport in Bangkok and wondered if anyone has a recent experience as to what is acceptable proof of local address. I have a Thai Amex statement, HSBC Jersey credit card statement and TM30 ( print out) that might be suitable. Any ideas? TIA

electric or water bill i guess would do

My PEA bill shows my address in Thai which obviously wasn't going to be of any use.

I used my UK bank account which shows the anglicised version of my Thai address.

It doesn't go through the embassy.

I'd expect all your suggestions would be acceptable.

Passport office, not embassy.

Irrelevant for 2 reasons. 1. The UK Embassy does not deal with renewal of passports. 2. The UK passport office who supply the renewed passports from the UK need everything in English in the application.

UK passport applications from Thailand are processed in the UK.

Sorry , that must be the reason then , as when i took my new passport at my BKK embassy they had a Thai desk person who spoke English .

So i thought  Embassy handled that and would take care for their U.K. citizens passport's 😇

That’s what I was hoping but I wanted to get people’s actual recent experience to be sure.

I presume that you aren’t talking about the UK embassy as they don’t deal with passport applications. VFS handles UK passport applications

I used my Thai driving license

You can get a Thai bank statement with your Thai address shown in English.

Thanks. The SCB statement ordered via the app has my mailing address in English. I can try that. I also have letters from the Electoral Registration Office in my home county which I can try.

A printed AIS bill is easy to get at any AIS branch. The address is in English per the VFS team’s recommendation; if it’s in Thai, you’ll need a translation. The simplest proof of address, per BM’s advice, is a rental contract in your name and in English.

Thanks. I can download an AIS bill from the app and print it out. Or do you think it would need to be printed and stamped by AIS? Rental contract doesn’t apply as I own my condo. I think I will take a selection and let them choose ( after redacting account numbers from bank related documents).

Thai driving licence seems the way to go especially as it's linked to your current passport.

Let us know what they accepted, i do mine next month

Likewise, i used my Thai drivers licence also last year.

Actually i was at VFS with all the documentation but had somehow missed the proof of address. The lady asked me if i had a Thai license and took a photocopy.

Recently had a similar problem. I went to immigration and asked for Proof of Residency that they gave for driving licence.  No they won't issue for my reason (foreign bank) . So I thought OK I'll go to DLT and ask for a request to prove address for a new driving license even though my driving licence is OK. But that may still require translation.

After a ponder I went to SCB and asked for a statement (need passport) . Fully accepting the translation problem.

They gave me a form to fill in to request a statement so I put my address as I know it in "English". They dutifully transcribed my address into a PC and my 3 month (cheapest) statement showed my address in English and has a green bank stamp on it with a red initial. Bingo.

Your bank or mileage may vary.

Did you upload the docs prior to the appointment or just turn up with the copies?

I turned up with all the copies, online just made the appointment no uploading.

This is not understandable---sorry why do you need a Bank letter for a Residence Certificate (for Licence renewal)..am I missing something?

Yes.

He needed a CoR (proof of address) for his foreign bank. Immigration wouldn't give it to him for that reason so he was going to get one for renewal of his licence - which would still prove his address.

In the end he didn't and got a statement from his Thai bank with his address in English.

A good outcome, but all that work (and cost) was arguably unnecessary. I post this for information for others in a similar situation.

You could have just copied a partner's ID (I used her passport) and written in it..."I confirm that Mt VocalNeal lives with me at 123 soi 2, Khon Kaen...." and have it signed.

UKPA are not looking to put obstacles in the way and have been very flexible in accepting documents.

I need proof of residence for overseas bank due diligence. Something to do with Thailand and money laundering. (who would have thought?)

Having finally got round to renewing my passport I can report on what was accepted as proof of local address. The website says one document proving local address is required but they actually sent 4 documents from the selection that I submitted. The accepted documents were

1 SCB bank statement ordered from the app and printed from the PDF file

2 AIS postpaid phone bill printed from the pdf file

3 Amex Thailand bill copy of original

4 copy of letter from DWP re pension

Obviously confidential information was redacted before submission

Note that although VFS checked and accepted my photos HMPO rejected them as they did not meet the specifications so check photos very carefully before submitting because they charged my card before notifying me that the photos weren’t acceptable. Specifically they said that the size of my head was too big. It cost me 1300 Baht to DHL the new photos to HMPO

That's disappointing - I thought it was VFS's job to check things like the photos, before it's submitted to HMPO?
