Former Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra could face a jail term longer than his current one-year sentence due to a possible new lawsuit. Allegations involve his supposed conspiracy to avoid imprisonment by staying in a Police Hospital ward for six months, following his return from self-exile in 2023. Authorities suggest Thaksin may have exploited legal loopholes with help from certain officials.

Thaksin, currently in Klong Prem central prison, may be charged if found guilty of conspiring with government officials from the Department of Corrections and Police Hospital. These officials allegedly secured Thaksin's hospital stay to keep him out of prison, according to former National Security Council member, Paradorn Patanatabutr. The National Anti-Corruption Commission is exploring actions against these officials.

The Medical Council of Thailand disciplined doctors who allegedly misrepresented Thaksin’s medical condition, facilitating his hospital stay. Thaksin was in hospital yet actively involved in political dealings, leveraging his influence to distribute cabinet roles and appoint Srettha Thavisin as prime minister post-2023 elections.

Thaksin’s family might request his parole within four to six months, but odds suggest the Supreme Court may deny it, considering his previous self-exile. Moreover, discussions are ongoing regarding a lese majeste case tied to Thaksin's 2015 remarks about the monarchy during an interview. The case, discarded by a lower court, is under review by the Office of the Attorney-General for potential appeal.

Prayut Chan-o-cha, who led a coup against Thaksin's sister Yingluck in 2014, previously had Thaksin’s eight-year sentence reduced to one year by royal decree. However, this sentence wasn’t enacted until the recent Supreme Court decision. The ongoing legal processes could extend over years, with potential verdicts looming in the Supreme Court.

Key Takeaways

  • Thaksin may face an extended jail term if new charges are proven.
  • Allegations involve manipulating legal systems to avoid jail time.
  • Future court decisions could significantly alter Thaksin’s incarceration period.

So will the Government officials who conspired with Thaksin be arrested and charged, if Thaksin gets charged?

What makes you think he is not still there, could be a body double in Prison and Mr T is languishing in Dubai.  Only a DNA test will prove otherwise.   Cheers

Things could get a lot worse for him if the lese majeste case is resurrected, and if he is finally reported to the ICC for the deaths of innocent people shot during his so-called campaign against alleged drug dealers.
