A foreign driver fled after his sedan crashed into a motorcycle, a parked car, and three roadside restaurants in Rayong's Ban Chang district, injuring two people. The incident prompted Thipsuda Wayruwanarak, the owner of one of the affected restaurants, to file a complaint with the Ban Chang Police. Thipsuda’s establishment was preparing food when the crash occurred, narrowly avoiding more serious injuries.

Prior to hitting the restaurant, the driver struck a white car outside before colliding with two additional nearby eateries. Thipsuda and her husband narrowly avoided harm, but one employee was injured, though the condition remains undisclosed. Footage aired by Channel 8 captured the chaos as victims screamed during the crash. It's notable that no customers were present, as outdoor tables were not set that day.

The foreign driver is suspected of earlier hitting a motorcycle at Ban Prachummit Intersection, resulting in a female rider suffering a broken leg. Despite this, the driver did not stop and continued on, leading to further collisions. Police are actively working to identify and summon him for questioning.

In April, a similar incident occurred in Rayong, involving a foreign driver who collided with a truck and motorcycle, resulting in his death and critical injuries to two Thai motorcyclists. These incidents have raised concerns about traffic safety and enforcement in the area, highlighting the challenges police face in holding foreign nationals accountable.

Looking forward, authorities have emphasized the importance of identifying and questioning the suspect to address such reckless driving behavior. The ongoing police investigation seeks to ensure such incidents do not repeat, aiming to enhance safety and accountability on Rayong's roads.

Key Takeaways

  • A foreign driver caused multiple collisions in Rayong, injuring two.
  • One motorcyclist suffered a broken leg; the driver fled the scene.
  • Police are investigating to identify and summon the driver.

Fleeing the scene they will get hammered when caught

When there is such lax enforcement and just a fine if caught, it's like an invitation for people to drive drunk.

Sure wont be lax when they catch up to him, and they will very quickly.

Foreign? What has this to do with nationality? Get the culprit but, just to correct the nationality issue; 99% of the "drivers fleeing the scene" are not foreign.

So, irrespective of nationality, race, religion etc. - just go out, catch the fellow, park him in the slammer after having paid for the damage and throw away the key. (S)he could have been killing a person instead ...........

Maybe, but that wasn't my point.

You can be almost100% sure that if a Thai does a runner after being involved in an accident he will not have insurance.

Really?

But that's what the locals do all the time? One particular incident involved a Ferarri and a (now dead) cop.

I don't think his fleeing will make much difference, as long as palms are greased.

Hope they catch this P.O.S.

A nasty cowedly business, Hit and Run. :bah:

Two tier system one for locals and one for the rest

I really hate how fast people drive in Thailand. It doesn't matter how small the street is people will go as fast as possible even if that means pushing you off the side of the road. It's such a rotten part of their culture but everyone accepts it here.

Maybe if they actually enforced basic speed limits this guy would have been caught before he could cause any damage but of course that's never going to happen.

Yes, I read the report, and ask the same question, you said they would get hammered.

Surely, the challenges are no different than holding any individual accountable, whether a foreign national or a local resident / citizen.

They are charged with the appropriate offence - such as reckless driving - and fined or penalised in exactly the same manner and to the same standard as a local Thai citizen would be.

So... What’s so difficult about that? Aside from the typical “Thai-on-Thai softness” and the “songsaan” mentality - oh, they’re poor, they need their car for work, they can’t afford the fines or repairs… Paraphrasing the mindset, of course - but it is precisely this “feeling sorry for them” attitude that only perpetuates the chaos on our roads: the motorcycle deaths, the lack of helmets, the tailgating, the outrageous levels of drunk driving, and the thousands upon thousands of needless fatalities...

I hope Bob made it home from the pub OK.

"..highlighting the challenges police face in holding foreign nationals accountable"! This must be a joke! I'd like to see statistics on the percentage of traffic accidents involving Thais and foreigners!:coffee1:

No, three tier system, one for rich, influential locals, another for ordinary locals, and a 3rd for foreigners.
