Airports of Thailand (AOT) expects Suvarnabhumi Airport to serve 67.7 million passengers in the 2026 fiscal year, reaffirming its role as a leading aviation hub in the region. The projection follows the restoration of Thailand’s aviation safety rating to Category 1 by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), paving the way for direct flights to the United States. United Airlines has already applied to operate a new route connecting Las Vegas, Hong Kong and Bangkok.

According to AOT Director Kittipong Kittikachorn, Suvarnabhumi is forecast to handle around 397,323 flights in 2026. The airport, already among the busiest in the world, expects new airlines to begin operations, including United Airlines. Passenger traffic from the European Union continues to grow, supported by Thai Airways expanding routes to Europe, while demand from India also shows strong growth, reducing reliance on the Chinese market.

The FAA’s decision to reinstate Thailand’s Category 1 status after ten years marks a significant milestone for the country’s civil aviation sector. The upgrade allows Thai and foreign airlines to launch or expand long-haul services, including direct flights to the US. The change reflects compliance with international safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Suvarnabhumi Airport is also implementing major upgrades to improve passenger experience. These include expanding facilities at concourses C and F and at the SAT-1 terminal, with new amenities such as Kids Zones, Game Stations, Recliner Areas, Co-Working Spaces, a Piano Lounge and a digital park. The airport is also installing 203 charging stations, up from 132 and renovating 124 restrooms across passenger and concourse buildings, with completion expected by 2028.

In terms of security and processing, new systems are being rolled out, including Passenger Validation Systems, CT X-ray machines, and Automated Border Control for e-passports. Cargo operations are also being expanded with the Freezone Smart Access system to ease traffic from 8,000 trucks per day. By 2028, a third cargo warehouse operator will be introduced to support growth in e-commerce and global trade.

Suvarnabhumi marks its 19th anniversary on 28 September 2025, having served over 878.65 million passengers, 5.45 million flights, and 20.62 million tonnes of cargo since opening. In the 2025 fiscal year to August, the airport hosted 126 airlines with 340,670 flights, up 7% year-on-year, and handled 58.1 million passengers, a 4.91% increase. AOT said the airport is entering its 20th year with the goal of becoming a “World Class Hospitality Airport” to strengthen Thailand’s connectivity and economy.

Key Takeaways

• Suvarnabhumi expects 67.7 million passengers and nearly 400,000 flights in 2026.

• FAA upgrade to Category 1 paves way for direct US flights, with United Airlines applying for a new route.

• Major upgrades to facilities, security, and cargo operations are planned through 2028.

Darn. Good on you TAT! You are reaching low as expected. Not even surpassing 2024 volume. Down the ditch!

Another prediction which will not hold...This week we could read that SE Asia is declining in tourists, but that other destinations are growing. This is because of the climate change as people are urged to fly less or nearby. Beside that all over the world holidays are becoming more and more expensive, while the economy is slowing down..It seems that not many people read independent international news, but only believe what they think

Pipe dream

But do they know how many of those are arriving compared to the number departing?

Good luck with that!!

Thailands tourist related authorities & agencies are forever predicting the unlikely but publishing it regardless. This week its all positive and next week its "bugar" the numbers are down. It a seesaw game they play from fantasy to reality and the latter is enhanced to "save face" a chronic weakness which is regional!

It’s high time TAT splurged on a new crystal ball – the old one can barely be trusted to predict yesterday’s weather anymore.

That is great but have they informed the 67+ millions yet? If they don't know they wont come
