Krungsri Bank App Problem.

Featured Replies

The major issue is almost certainly security.

Indeed, people in Thailand over the age of 70 suddenly all become gibbering idiots, unlike every other country in the civilised world where some of them retain the ability to manage their bank accounts online.  Right?

I assume (I might be wrong of course) you are trying for an extension of stay permit based on retirement and not a visa? While you at it why not ask your regular agent where it says on the immigration

  • Then again it might be only that branch as Thais are notorious for making their own rules as they go along. I'll try several other Krungsri Banks and report back the results.

No, mine hasn't.

I asked if that was the reason in my original question.

I just can't imagine giving someone else that sort of access personally.

you hand them the phone, transfer is made they hand back the phone, it's a new thing since the BB incident

As my retirement visa expires in 6 weeks time I visited my regular agent to see if there is any changes to the requirents. He told me that a Krungsri Bank app is required, previously it was a Bangkok Bank app. So I tried to open my Krungsri app and nothing happened. I then visited my nearest Krungsri Bank and  I was told that as I'm over 70 yo I can't have an app. I explained that I needed a Krungsri Bank app to obtain a new retirement visa. I was told sorry sir we can't help you. What's my age got to do with it. I've used Krungsri for my main account for the past 25 years and there's around 250K in the account. Has anybody been refused an Krungsri app because of their age?

Yes i was recently denied an app because i am over 70 !! But do you need for your retirement visa? I just get a letter from Krungsri showing my 800k and a copy of my savings book.

But of course i am not too old to invest 800k with them.

It needs to be put out of its misery for ALL Krungsri account holders IMHO, not just those aged 70+!

Why are people 70 + years such a security risk, is their logic to this or is it just another Thai brain f**t?

Well I, as a fully paid-up member of the septuagenerian society, am firmly of the view that Krungsri are to be fulsomely congratulated for possibly turning out to the only Thai bank which is not hell-bent on ramming a fundamentally lousy banking app down the throats of its septuagenarian account holders, against their will. I find it amazing that the majority consensus on here appears to be that the dreaded Thai banking app really is the very best thing in banking since sliced bread - and all the more amazing that this point of view is seemingly shared by a few fellow septuagenarians. 🤣

Ok here goes, I went to my agent today and I told him I have two problems. No1. as I'm over 70 yo my Krungsri Bank app has been cut, he told me no problem as he can fixit it. No 2. I have to be in Korat when my one year extension is due. My brother inlaw is about to become a monk and he's requested that I be there for his ordination. We are very good friends but he gets drunk far to much and nobody wants him. So I asked my agent when I can I renew my extension, he said up to you as long as it's not less than 30 days.

Sounds like you've had good news.

Can fix (reinstate) your access to the app?  Or work around that you no longer have the app (and get you your extension)?

Out of what I know, they have no such official rule.

Did the OP call the bank call centre and get an answer.

Same as others i've experienced wrong answers from local bank staff. e.g. I went with my Thai son to ,, Bank, he wanted to open another savings account (already had 3 or 4 operating long term.

Before the girl started any documents for the new savings account son got her attention and said and repeated very clearly "I don't want an TM or debit card for this new account". Two minutes later bank lady says "sign here and here". Son asks "what's this document for" Response "for the debit card". Son responds politely for "I said I don't want an ATM/ Debit card". Bank lady hesitates then sys "New rule from the Bank of Thailand, all new savings accounts have to have an ATM / Debit card". i son

Son's wife was on the phone talking to xx Bank call centre, they indicated "No such rule"

Lady at branch now says "100Baht for card". Son says "NO". Lady says I cannot cancel the ATM/Debit card application.

Son's wife is again on the phone, this time to Krung Thai branch 5 minutes walk away.  Son's wife has scooped up scoops up all the old / current bank books etc., and say "we're leaving, going to Krung Thai " bank and we all walk out.

Son's wife doesn't allow games, at KT she asks them to replace all the existing xxbank accounts with new KT accounts, no ATM/debit cards.

Son's wife now ready to kill. We all went back to xx bank and she tells the XX bank staff "cancel all these accounts and a want a refund on the ATM cards that will never be used again.

Bank manager realises there's a very unhappy customer, he tells his staff to quickly calculate a refund amount and he quickly gives my son / son's wife cash from his pocket, no documents.

It was suggested here to try Krungsri Biz, so after about 10 OTP's my main Krungsri account opened. I had to change my password but that was done online. As far as I can see there's no difference so why close Krungsri online.

I have a Krungsri app on my phone and use it almost every day to transfer money and scan QR codes to pay for items. I'm 79.

Yes! Also have to produce passport when depositing money!

Why did Krungsri Bank stop online banking anyway? And surely they must have known that it would cause problems refusing apps to 70 year olds?

Krungsri told me the same even though I had had an account with them for years, they said they were closing online banking down and the only way to access my account was via their app which they said I couldn’t have. They told me to come back the next day and the app was duly downloaded by them.

One less platform to support (pay for).

With reported issues at BKK bank, I tried to open an acct at the local Krungsri branch but no luck. Which branch in Pattaya should I try?

no luck why? if you have a long term visa, ideally retirement extension then it's easy, Krungsri Big C Klang, Central Festival or Jomtien

I meet all the requirements. Went to a branch in Bang Saen. Was rejected due to the issue date of my visa. Original date several years ago. Did not understand. Will drive to Pattaya

Another Issue I have just come across with Krungsri.

Now they have shut down the mobile app there is no way to transfer money from a FCD (Foreign currency deposit account) to my Thai baht account.

Apparently I can still send Sterling to my FCD account and view the balance, but to exchange it to Thai baht I have to go to the Bank. This makes no sense to me as both accounts are in my name at the same branch!

The reason I do this is so I can take advantage of the exchange rate fluctuations which has save me quite a lot over the last few years.

I thought they wanted people to use the apps but the absolute reverse is happening. I for one now keep a months worth of cash because I have no idea if I will be able to access my bank tomorrow!

I presume you actually mean online browser access and not the mobile app - or are you over 70 and it is shut down only for you and others of a similar disposition?

So, an agent problem. I do not use agents, or any banking app., Only internet banking on my computer for my UK banks. If i need to pay in money or take it out (rarely) i go to a bank, just 10 minutes drive away. For cash I use my UK credit card once or twice a month. Keep it simple. Thailand trying hard to F**k things up for us,

I'm not saying I agree or support Krungsri's policy decision on this, because I DON'T!

But by way of explanation, since several people asked above, I believe the Thai government and its banking regulators recently decided to restrict access to mobile banking apps to those over 70 out of the perception that older folks would be easy targets for banking theft scams if they had access to mobile banking apps....

And of course, the Thai govt. does such a GOOD job of preventing banking scams and thefts around these parts.... So let's just blanket label an entire age class as being inept and unable to manage their own finances!!!

The news article mentioned over 65's and new accounts so perhaps Krungsri went a step further......

The Bank of Thailand has announced strict new mobile banking transfer limits to combat rising financial fraud, capping daily transfers at 50,000 baht for children under 15 and seniors over 65 opening new accounts.

or the original article translation was not 100%.......

I have been to main Korat branch and they were unable to install their banking app, said my phone too slow. Tried to install using phone app from chrome store today but cannot, due because of age-80.

But I am actually relieved because I think Krungski is horrible bank. Employees are nice but it seems they have poor leadership. So this week I will go close my 800K Imm account and open account at another bank.

Of course!  See an old, 'rich', farang doddering down the street, face glued to his phone.  Who better to target?  Could clean out his bank account in minutes as he's the banks' security guard at this point.

Leave your mobile bank apps at home.  (And don't let anyone threaten you at home either.)

Better, have access on your mobile only to money you are willing to lose.

Go back to using bank cards - preferably credit cards, which have consumer protection.

I want to do the same but might it cause a problem with retirement visa if your 800k is with 2 banks, with maybe a short break of a day or 2?

A break would be a problem of course.  So in the 7 month period when you need to maintain 400k open the new account with 400k and transfer the remaining 400k a few days after.

I'm almost 80 and have a Krungsri account. I also have a Krungsri app on my phone. I used to have one on my PC, but it's just been closed down (for everyone). I've had the app for a long time, probably over 10 years. And, my Immigration Office in Phetchabun has NEVER mentioned that I need a bank app to extend my stay. I do need a full year's copy of my account showing I've deposited at least THB 65K every month, along with a letter from the bank manager stating I've been a customer for the year.
