Justice Minister Pol Lt Gen Rutthapon Naowarat has confirmed the decision to veto Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's royal pardon appeal. This move aligns with the recommendation of his predecessor, Pol Col Tawee Sodsong, as the appeal was advised against by the Department of Corrections.

Subsequently, Thaksin will remain in prison to serve out a one-year sentence, per the Supreme Court's final ruling.

The news followed Pol Lt Gen Rutthapon's announcement on Monday that he had submitted his opinion on Thaksin’s second pardon petition to the Cabinet Secretariat. He took the additional step of forming a committee, led by the permanent secretary for justice, to thoroughly review Thaksin's request within three days. After receiving the committee's findings, he included advisory remarks before forwarding the submission to the Cabinet Secretariat for further proceedings.

In accordance with Section 259 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the justice minister emphasised that any application for a royal pardon must be forwarded through the correct official channels to His Majesty. This ensures that the process remains lawful and transparent, fulfilling the requirements set by Thai law for such petitions.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thaksin's royal pardon appeal was vetoed, upholding the Supreme Court's ruling.
  • The justice minister reviewed the case, forming a special committee for analysis.
  • Applications for royal pardons follow strict legal procedures involving His Majesty.

Nah... it means he will be released for some other reason like age and have to wear a tracking monitor..Or perhaps he will only need to be in prison for a month or 2 more until he gets paroled.  6 months he is eligible for this i think for a one year sentence. But do not quote me as I am relying on his previous imprisonment for a year and what they said then.

Someone is in big trouble for advising Tony to come back and face the music for a few days before being released into society to look after his grandkids - oh! dear what a blunder.

Yes, surely Thaksin would have stayed in Dubai, if he thought he would be going back to prison, looks like someone dropped the ball?

Damn shame.

This guy has been ripping off the country for decades.

It's about time he landed in prison.

Now send the rest of his family there. They can share a cell.

Well, that's all very well. Problem is there's about 5000 or 10000 or 20000 other rich Thais who could be described in the same terms ... But nothing happens to them.

It must really hurt him when his application is rejected by a Police force that he once used to own.

Different story in the BK post

Great news, they can promote him to Foreman of clearing up all the sewerage, including his own

He's still got an outside chance of a pardon.........there is someone, at least technically, who could grant one......but it is certainly looking very unlikely now.

When will we get a picture with his prisoner haircut?

Because they are not the threat Mr Taksin is, he knows where all the skeletons are buried, who buried them, and probably helped bury some of them himself.  Normal for Thailand, he will be out of sight, out of mind for awhile, rthen be told that Thailand is not big enough for him and the rest of the old condors, and fly back to Dubai, for good this time.

He'll keep getting sick until they're sick of him.

Fair chance he is in Dubai.

Why would anyone fly to Dubai for the day and then return. Doesn't make any sense unless a body double came back in his place.

Don't ya love a conspiracy theory.

That’s the way, a-ha a-ha I like it, a-ha a-ha!

The fact that he even asked for one after he got 7 years off of his original sentence speaks volumes about his character!

That must really have really hurt Thaksin knowing he must spend 12 months in prison. As you get older and especially at his age the, days, weeks and  months in prison must feel like eternity. Plus being a big chunk stolen from his final years.
