Why would anyone carry 2000 in cash in the modern age?

To get a better rate.

Perhaps just sloppy reporting but it's quite unusual that someone from the Eurozone would travel with USD as it is just as easy to exchange Euros and the spreads are about the same as with USD. It makes zero sense to convert your Euros to Dollars before traveling.

You would be lucky to recover this cash in similar cicumstances in any country not just Thailand.

Wouldn’t be the first time a Finn has tried it on with an insurance fake claim.

Put your cash, passport, and Rolex in a plastic bag and slide it under the fridge. No Tea-Leaf since the invention of refrigerators ever looked under the fridge. :coffee1:

where do you live, thank you for the advice

Under a bridge - you're welcome. :coffee1:

If not a con, Who leaves that kind of money in hotels and such? Have they never travelled before? I get paranoid leaving the laptop and passport in a safe. Use an atm for gawd’s sake. You get grossly bent over but it at least affords some peace of mind. Guess they thought they could save a few bucks. 🙄

I have always brought in the basic amounts of cash I think I needed for my one or two month duration stays in Thailand.  About 4,000 USD.  I prefer not to have to depend on using an ATM.  In retrospect I have found that cash USD to baht exchange rates is a bit better than using an ATM to withdraw money.  I use etrade which used to automatically reimburse all ATM fees, and does so in the USA but not so much now overseas, especially that extra 250 baht withdrawal fee

I showed up last night with 100 USD in cash.  Most of my spending ends up on my visa.

This sucks...really, but why in God's name would you leave $2000 cash in your room?

Why?  I do not care where you travel on this planet, do not leave that kind of money in your hotel room or villa.

Take it with you.  Put it in your socks, or money belt or front pocket or Man Purse.

Painful lesson to learn.

Moral of the story don't leave 💰 unless it's in a safe box or proper location

Why would you leave that much money in your rental. Use a money belt or take with you in you purse or back pack is much safer.

Yup. Been there done that some 15 years ago. 🙃🙃

Yep on Samui… top of the hill overlooking Choeng Mon. Learnt a very expensive lesson. And the police were NO help at all.😜

Many years ago i woke up at about 4 am after a heavy drinking in Bangkok.Couldnt find my phone, passport.. credit cards and cash money.I looked everywhere in the room. After a while i saw a small key on the table and i really hoping it was for the safe in the reception.I went down and the lady behind the desk laugh when she saw me.

She said i was so drunk when i arrived the hotel they had taking all my values from me and locked it inside the hotel safe. When we open the safe i found everything I missed.Even about 30.000 baht in cash.I learned my lesson that time so it never happened again.I gave the lady in reception 2000 baht for her honesty.

Or poor investigation. Foteignerd arr wealthy and if the RTP is not paid decently they won't work too. I have experience as with my burgarly they adked how much I would pay to solve the case, as no payment they could not garantee results.

sure....but there are less criminals than normal people....

why would they do that [ dont say insurance that dosnt work !]

No, I know insurance doesn´t normally cover. However, some cover up to a certain amount. Maybe half.

I bet they just left it on the table , or alternatively after a night out

forgot where they hid it ,has happened to me ....

So where were they keeping the cash, and why wasn't it locked up in a secure location within the house?

Yup. Chiang Mai 6's cricket comp circa 2008. I suggested to a mate to stash his booty inside his pillowcase upon arriving home.

06:00, bangin' on doors, bedlam.....He's been rolled!

A quick search of his pillowcase found the goodies. Naturally he got a mega - fine for that.🙃🙃

So the two women were staying with family, did they all go out to eat or just themselves?

The report fails to mention where the money was being kept before the loss, or who knew about it within the people staying ,but both are guilty of sheer stupidity by having that amount of cash with them, potentially unsecured. Nobody in their right mind would consider ensuring it wasn’t secured in a safe  location to prevent exactly what happened from happening. As I said before it might be rank stupidity, but it appears to me that these two women aren’t completely telling the truth.

You shouldn't have to pay to access your own money.

Why shouldn't there be a fee for accessing  money using an overseas third party's equipment and service without which there'd be no access at all?

$2000?  Hardly worth it.

Or maybe it has never been any signs of any money at all.

That’s exactly what the hotel manager told some years ago me after 500 USD had been stolen from the room safe. The police who were called in said the same thing. Only two people were said to have the master code for the safe, and they were described as being beyond any doubt. Case closed.

Can be a problem where to keep valuables in a hotel room. There is often a small  safe ,but would you trust it ? I mean, who has a key ?

The Schwab account sounds good for fee free atm withdrawal, but UK customers would need to fund their account in £ ,then convert to dollars ,then back to £ ,then to baht ,so 2 x fx fees .

Around 20 years ago was in Kan. there was no safe in the room so i decided to stand on the bed, lift a ceiling tile

and put my stuff there.

Forgot all about it and 5 years later i went back, got the same room.

Pushed up the ceiling tile and there was my stuff!
