A friend who is also a member is unable to sign in since the recent upgrade.

He gets the error message: Please include an '@' in the email address.

Thanks for any information on how to solve this problem.

The login procedure has changed; you can no longer sign in with your username, it MUST be your email address linked to your account.

Luckily, I didn't log out yesterday before the software update; otherwise I wouldn't be posting here now.

I know that when I registered on this forum, respectively its predecessor Thaivisa, I had to give an email address but never had to use it ever since. For security reasons I did not use my regular email address and now, years later, I can't remember it and can't find any record of it. No sweat, I thought, since I'm still logged in I just look it up in my settings, and

HURRAY

there, it is.

Now, I can log out without fear of being locked out.

You were lucky to have been signed in at the time of the change.

My neighbour was signed out, and had also forgotten his old email address.

Now he doesn't know how to find it, He can't log in and go to 'settings'.

If members do not remember the email they used to sign up how do they access their account?

(asking for a friend)

Just curious but is there any particular reason why it has/was changed?

Had it happen with a UK financial co a few years ago but others haven't changed so wondering why - and I might get an answer from you thumbsup

Its simply an upgrade to the security.By using your username, the entire world can see that so all thats needed to access your account is the password, they are half way there.

With email, no one can see that information, so 2 pieces of info are needed not one.

Is that really a problem here? Has it happened before on Aseannow that someone has had their username hacked? I would have thought hackers would be more interested in hacking banking sites etc for financial gain.

Using a PC I click on to sign in and absolutely nothing happens. I decided to register as a new member, when writing my email add it said it was already used by an existing member....me! and that my password was wrong?? I eventually scrolled down and clicked onto a Thaivisa banner which allowed me to log in using google but the notification bell doesn't work. It's a cock up.

The upgrade is from the forum software provider. All forums have to adopt the change.

You are correct, AN isn't a huge target, but the some other sites using the same forum software are.

The other issue, of course, is that people do tend to reuse passwords.

Gain access to an innocuous forum. Find out the email address. Try the same password on the email account. Hijack the email account. Reset other passwords to the email address. On and on.

Thanks blackcab. Since the upgrade, I'm also finding on Firefox 115.31.0 esr (64-bit):

1. When hovering over a user's name, the pop-up menu doesn't load.

2. When highlighting text to copy, the page suddenly jumps to the bottom, away from the text being highlighted, which has the effect of not being able to copy any text on the forum.

Disabling all my extensions didn't fix it. If you could pass that on to your tech guys to sort out - many thanks.

must be easy to make a new account. if, by accident it is same as the old one ;), then you will be asked for your pw. if pw is forgotten as well, proper websites offer the option to renew the pw. success.

Thanks to all advice above as there have been no responses to my queries regarding this matter at "contact us"

I dredged back through years of old email addresses used (Hotmail etc) about the time I would have first registered with the then, 'Thai Visa'.

Luckily an old one and very old password worked, so I'm back in.

I, for one, didn't see any prior notice of this upgrade and changes.

It doesn't meant there weren't...at 75 this happens more frequently!

Where was this information posted on the forum prior to the upgrade, I certainly didn't see anything and I use the forum every day, apologies if I missed it, because it would of saved all the hassle I've gone through since the up-grade, ie, verifying e-mail every day, e-mailing Contact Us every day, because I didn't know that this Forum Support was right at the bottom of the forum, reregistering with a new account after having account for 15 years.

@Skinman The information was posted:

  1. As an announcement, coloured red, at the top of every page and in the sidebar, viewable by all members;

  2. As a pinned topic in this forum;

  3. In email newsletters

As mentioned in an earlier post which was transferred to here from General Chat but not showing, my user-name was himmel.

These may be Firefox issues rather than an issue caused by the forum upgrade, since I do not get the same results as you describe using Brave browser.

1 When I hover over a user name, I get this (as expected)

nexus.jpg

2 I can highlight/copy/paste text normally.

I would suggest trying another browser of your choice to see if the issues happen in that browser.

Thanks. Using Chrome browser fixes the copy problem but not the pop up one.

Disabling JavaScript in Firefox fixes the copy problem but not the pop up one, so it's likely some JavaScript issue.

If you mean hover over your own username in the bar at the top of the page to get this menu, then you actually need to left-click on the name or avatar to display the menu.

TBH I can't remember how it was before the upgrade.

hover.jpg

I mean hover over other people's username.

But it's no biggy. Will work around it!
