A 94-year-old man was injured after being struck by a songthaew driver, while using a zebra crossing outside Pattaya police station, drawing renewed attention to pedestrian safety on busy roads. The incident occurred on Pattaya Beach Road, directly in front of the city police station.

The collision was captured on surveillance camera footage that later circulated widely on social media, prompting public concern. Rescuers rushed the man to hospital, where he remains under medical care with serious injuries.

According to the footage, the elderly man was walking slowly across the pedestrian crossing and stopped in the centre of the road for nearly a minute. A songthaew, then approached and struck him, throwing him to the ground and leaving him lying in the roadway.

The victim was later identified as Mr Od, aged 94. He suffered a broken upper arm and other injuries and was taken by rescuers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation to Pattaya Patmakun Hospital, where he continues to receive treatment.

Police said the collision took place when Mr Od had been crossing the road to exercise on Pattaya Beach, with the CCTV footage recording the moment of impact. The songthaew driver reported to police after the crash. He accepted responsibility for the incident and agreed to cover all medical expenses for the injured man, according to police statements.

Officers said they have arranged a meeting between the driver and Mr Od’s family to discuss the matter and proceed according to legal procedures. No further details were provided on potential charges or penalties at this stage.

The Bangkokpost reported that the video has prompted widespread online discussion, with many commenters noting that similar collisions occur frequently in Thailand. Several pointed to high vehicle speeds and drivers’ inability to stop in time at zebra crossings as contributing factors. The case remains under police review as the victim continues his recovery in hospital.

Driver was not even looking where he was going, not exactly like the old guy jumped out i front of him.

Feel sorry for the guy and hope he recovers. The Songtaew driver maybe wasn't paying attention, although he did seem to react quite quickly as soon as he noticed the man, and he didn't seem to be speeding looking at distant it took to stop. However, I do think he might have some mitigation, since the article states that the man was hit “while using a zebra crossing,” but the video shows the man starting to cross the road on the far side of the crossing from the driver’s perspective. Also, the man was wearing very dark colours which might make him harder to see at night.

Kudos to the old guy for still going to exercise at 94 y.o. I hope this accident at such a late stage of life isn't the end of him.

Worst place to cross, too busy, in fact a terrible time to cross also

It’s ironic how the worst place to cross is right in front of a police station.

I drove down Second Rd yesterday and surprisingly the traffic seemed to be stopping for the crossings near Central.

Even moe ironic is that Thai drivers, en masse still don't know the law re pedestrian crossings and even worse still disrespect pedestrian crossing laws. My Son has raised theis many time in family discussions, always prompting the same comens about 'I don't agree with the zebra crossing laws (vehicles have to stop when people are walking on the zebra crossing) so I don't stop.

One old dragon from the family who has been charged several times for running red lights and more even says she has a letter from the Suko Thai snr. cop saying she is exempt from Thai traffic laws. She often attends family (it's a big family) activities and offers to drive people home to their various provinces, they all refuse. And she has to be monitored to ensure she hasn't put children from other family members in her car ready to drive them to their home provinces / towns. My Thai son caught her doing this and gave her a very serious warning to not touch his 4 kids in any way. Her response is that the children also belong to her as their aunty so she can do whatever she likes. As said, she comes to family events and get's totally ignored.

Yes, but her husband (much older, in his 80's), has the same attitudes and he doesn't come to family events, mostly because he hates children and in the past has been quite violent to kids for no real reason. He hit one little girl (4 yrs old) across the mouth with a length of steel angle iron because she asked for more rice, she had long term dental repair work in Bkk.

That was reported to local police who fined him 5,000Baht* and he had to pay all the medical and transport expenses. He was in eralier days a Muay Thai boxer, did many events, no real success. For years he's carried his boxing gloves tied around his waist. After the incident above he was informed by the grandmother of the little girl he was totally not welcome ever at family houses / events.

don'

*5000Baht. I don't know what law was applicable, but I'm aware that local cops can invent laws / punishment as they see fit. The same old guy has caused several accidents and when he was younger he instantly started fights at the accident scene, causing injury, often given severe punishment by same local cop.

I guess the obvious question is: Is she seeing anyone?

Someone not actually crossing in the Zebra crossing, and a Thai driver hitting someone in plain sight......you can't make this up.

She has a husband (24 yrs older then her) at home. He's an even worse driver in terms of attitude and no respect whatever for the law.

When the mother of the dragon was alive (she's the mother of my son's wife) she caught him twice hitting little kids (3 and 4 yrs old) with a long stick and punching them in the face. The mother (now deeased) was the village chief, she banned the old son-in-law from her property and other family members have done the same. The snr. cop in Suko Thai town confiscated his 2 driving licenses years ago. He was then caught driving and spent 7 days in jail.

Back to the old dragon from Suko Thai, the most recent event was a family wedding, she tried to disrupt the proceedings and desroyed some food that had been prepared. When my son and his wife attend family functions and she's there my son / wife keep their 4 kids very close and watch them every second.

Son's eldest daughter arrived late at the wedding because she had an end of year uni exam. The bride and groom had been informed and had said 'It's OK if she comes late, she can't miss her important exam'. Dragon aunty abused granddaughter for lack of respect and tried to force her to le on the ground and apologize. Son and his wife and bride and groom stopped this and called the local police. She was handcuffed and spent the rest of the day in the local police lock up. Late same day a jnr cop drove her car (with er in the car in handcuffs) back to her home in Suko Thai. Jnr cop then took a bus (about 50 minutes) back to the wedding location.

Sounds like you have married into a good family.

Just don't leave your car keys hanging around. 🙂

That will hurt, I am surprised if he survives at his age.

Maybe better to do the exercise in a park , not a zebra crossing.
