I enjoy a roast dinner but steer clear of going for one on a Sunday for fear of the places being too busy. Were Kilkennys and P&W busy and did you have to wait long to get served?

Funny that you ask that. I have known about the Kilkenny's 199 lamb roast for a long time but walked by a few times and it was empty so I didn't feel like eating in an empty restaurant that really isn't a restaurant but rather a bar. This time at about 6 pm there were about four bar tables eating and I noticed one other having the roast. So I would say don't worry. I think places with popular roast buffets do get crowded.

Kilkenny Pub (and Restaurant)

Soi LK Metro (nightlife area)

I'm not pretending to be an expert on Sunday roasts as they aren't a part of my background, but living in Pattaya I've developed a taste for an occasional indulgence into that tradition.

They seem to be an endless subject of debate as to which is the best, which is the best value for money, and which is the cheapest. Similar to the English breakfast discussions.

Well the 199 plated lamb Sunday roast is clearly not the cheapest or the best.

However, it's very satisfying and good value for money. The thickish sliced lamb (perhaps a tad overcooked) in gravy alongside LARGE portions of roasted potato. mashed potatoes, mixed fresh vegetables, Yorkshire pudding, and a gravy boat. Mint sauce in a bottle is offered. The meat portion could have been bigger but lamb is expensive. On the bland side overall but I feel that way about roast dinners in general. Beer is cheap.

It's a bar. So you sit on stools and eat on bar tables. Oh well.

Kilkenny features daily specials the rest of the week, and also a menu with the expected western food and also Thai.

I have never been there, sounds fine to me, thanks for the review.

I have been several times to cafe Pattini on soi bukhao for a Sunday roast,

usually choose beef.

Not a big plate, which suits me fine as I do not have a big appetite. Service good, never had a bad meal there.

Just sub 200 baht unless prices have gone up recently.

Kilkenny obviously another option.

Where else for a reasonable quality roast ? do not want big, nor all you can eat buffet

Around the 200 baht mark.

On a baht bus route.

I've tried Devonshire on Lengkee . Similar price range. It's large. I hated their fried stuffing but liked their cheesy cauliflower. I think I recall the pudding was on the greasy side. It's been a while since I've been there though.
I thought the low budget Tequila Sunrise roast in Jomtien was OK. It was smaller. But they changed owners and I think only open at night.

Nickeys is on Bath Bus route Bukhao and is reasonable, forget price but under 300B

Generally good quality on the few times I have been. Small pork (with actual crackling) is 260 baht and lamb/beef higher priced. Small is a misnomer and more than adequate unless you have a huge appetite!

Also air con, quiet and good service.

I have no recent comments on the place pro or con. Two years back is often not relevant to the current situation in any restaurant. I have read some very recent very positive comments about the place online so interested people are advised to do their own boots on ground / hands in the plate and they are very welcome to post about that here.

Very true.  I do pass it often and it never seems busy. I dont demand a great deal from Indian restaurants but I wont be shouted at by customers trying to impress their Thai girl friends.

Yes. Excellent roast pork with beautiful crackling. Creamy mash and vegetables not over cooked. Its cheap as a daily special as was the Hunters Special. Big portions too and good service. They also have Parmo, a british dish adapted from the Italian POWs in WW2.

Went to Retox Outback this evening, had their daily special, chicken cordon bleu. For 199B, this dish was outstanding, both in taste and value, good quality chicken, cream sauce came in a boat with crispy bacon, 3 veg and mash.

I struggled to finish, big portion.

Chinese dumplings, noodles, etc. restaurant

No restaurant name in English

Tepprasit road Jomtien

First block from Tappraya

North side of road (Foodmart side)

New to me but apparently they've been open a year already.

Tasty food. Authentic. Low prices. Picture menu. No English on menu. No English spoken. Chinese and Thai spoken but not by the same people.

I assume the noodles are not made in house but the dumplings are.

Of the five items I've tried already the dumplings in spicy soup is my favorite by far and the Chinese pork burger in Chinese style bun my least favorite by far as the bun seemed not fresh.

Google translate of the menu is mostly useless.

But I help out here to some degree.

For the nine menu items I've numbered them and listed them starting from the upper left hand side and going clockwise.

Menu item 1

wonton soup 60

Menu item 2*

cold cucumber salad with gluten fake meat spicy or not 60

Menu item 3*

rice noodles more spicy or not gluten cucumber sprouts better than just cuke but similar 80

Menu item 4*

Chinese pork burger special bun 80

Menu item 5

some kind of noodle thing spicy on top oil splash surface is the Google translation. 80

Menu item 6

dumplings, two kinds 100

* First one pork cabbage

Second also pork different style

Quantity 12 dumplings

Menu item 7

hot noodles vegetable probably meat is not soup 100

Menu item 8*

dumplings in spicy soup and some kind of dark colored vegetable /fungus. Probably same dumplings as the plain ones from menu item 6. Pricing is odd if also 12 dumplings because I would expect it to be more expensive to include the soup. Not sure if it's first or second dumpling in the soup assuming they are the same thing.

100

Menu item 9

sliced beef dipping sauces 200

For the Tepprasit road dumpling place above the asterisks indicate dishes that I've tried already. About hours as far as I know they are closed Sundays but probably otherwuse open daily while closing at 8 pm but I they may close earlier if no customers.

Lu Yuan

In the old Brunos building Tappraya Road Jomtien.

Speaking of hours, OMG this takes the cake! You've heard of bankers hours right? Well not so much abundance of openness in this case.

Sign on their door says open for lunch from noon to 2:30. OK. Fine. A lot of places close between lunch and dinner. Their posted night hours are 5 pm till late.

So the first time I arrived about 2:10 feeling a little sheepish but there were other customers arriving at the same time so no problem.

Today I arrived at about 10 of 2 feeling more confident. Was told the chef went home already. Not great so then I asked what the actual lunch hours are. I was told the last food orders are taken at 1:30. Asking three times if they meant everyday because it was hard to believe a place advertising they are open to 2:30 would actually shut the kitchen that early. But they confirmed it three times.

Speaking of they there was a staff of about five people seemingly just hanging out. Very odd. I have never heard of a lunch hour policy like that before anywhere in the world. But yes of course they can run their business any way they choose but what's up with the sign on the door saying open to 2:30? Yeah you betcha I gave them a piece of my mind mainly about the sign.

Now do you think they will change the sign? My bet is not.

Wine Connection

Chain restaurant with adjacent wine shop

Royal Garden Mall beach side front

They have an attractive 199 set promotion until 5 p.m. Choose any pizza or pasta from their regular menu, get a fancy side salad starter, and choice of soft drink. Glass of wine 100 baht possibly subject to legal time restrictions.

I went with the burrata, parma ham, rocket, and cherry tomatoes pizza which is normally 260 on the menu. I was offered a choice of thin or thick crusts and unwisely chose thin. I did ask if they had medium and they said no. I suspect the thick isn't really thick, can someone confirm? Anyway the thin crust as is fair to expect was the crispy cracker style crust that I happen to dislike. The crust flavor was not there either so I do wonder if the "thick" is better. However, the toppings were excellent and in decent portions as well.

Here you can see their entire menu including all the choices of pizzas and pastas for their "early bird" before 5 p.m. promotion.

10 percent service charge is added to the bill, tax is not.

Linda's

Norwegian

Tappraya road, Jomtien

Map here:

Well known long standing not cheap place with good food seems to be experimenting with some promotions.

Pork stew or Fish ball plate appears to be offered for lunch and dinner. Only 200. That's a low price for a Norwegian fish ball plate. I've had before there at the regular price and it was very good. Can't comment on how good the promotion version is.

Friday nights only, mussels and fries, only 180

Reservations encouraged

That looks an attractive promotion deal at 220B, will hopefully try today and report back.

The "fancy side salad starter" is there a choice of starter?

I have been to wine collection in Chiang Mai a few times and always enjoyed food there.

Went to Prime Burger, next door to McDonalds, opposite tree town on Soi Buakaow last night, nice place, well decked out, comfortable atmosphere, pleasant and well trained staff.

I went for the Bangkok burger, sweet fried potatoes, 205B for the single burger and 95B for fries.

The beef patty was one of the best I have tasted in Pattaya, could tell it was made from quality ingredients.

I pass Linda's a lot and have to say, never seems busy, did have a nice breakfast there about a year ago,

Just fear for this sort of place, given current market change in Pattaya.

It's in prime area for a Chinese takeover. I've been to Linda's for the sandwiches, which are good. It's the clinical ambience and fairly hefty prices that have kept me from going back in.

Best case scenario: They move to the burgeoning foodie center in dark side, back side of Soi Talman and thanks to low rents put the prices down.

That cheese .. why oh why. If it has to be base processed cheddar, at least melt it to fool the eye. Jim's FTW, I visited their new location at 3rd road last weekend, still as good as ever and very nice New England ale from tap. And yes it did have parking only 30m away on the curb.
