CCTVs being used to catch traffic law violators in Chiang Mai

 

The Chiang Mai Municipality and other municipalities of 11 districts of this northern province, starting from Sept 1, have used closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor traffic law violators in a bid to reduce road accidents.

 

On the morning of Sept 1, traffic engineers of the Chiang Mai Municipality conduct a final check of the CCTV control system at the traffic signal control centre as well as all CCTV cameras installed at various spots to ensure they are in a working condition.

 

Kiatisak Phianpoldeesakul, chief of the Chiang Mai Municipality’s traffic engineering section, said the CCTV cameras in operation are with a high definition of 5 million pixels.  The footage can provide important evidence of crimes and traffic law violations.

Be careful what you wish for.  Nanny state is arriving fast.  Fine in the post on its way for crossing that solid white line that was painted in the incorrect place by road planners who have no idea what they're doing!

Not before time.  Start hitting red light jumpers with hefty fines just to kick things off nicely.   No better way to teach anyone something then by hitting them hard in the pocket.

 

Those who complain about 'Nanny States' should care more about reducing accidents and saving lives.

Well on the other hand if it helps to reduce the endemic behavior / numbers of cars and bikes running red lights 3, 4, 5  seconds after red then it's worth it to gain some safety for my Thai son and his Thai wife and their 3 kids.

Will it hit the red light jumpers? it at best can only detect the vehicle if they have a visible licence plate.

CCTV issued tickets mailed to car owners have just about zero deterrent value.  It's just the price a driver pays to drive as insanely as they wish.  
This is what deters Western drivers, along with stiff fines, point systems leading to loss of license, reports to insurance companies that cause substantial raises in premiums, and of course the chance that you may be going to jail.

How about those lights that go from yellow to red in less than 2 seconds, and if you actually attempt to stop you have a better than 50/50 chance of getting rear ended.  It's pretty sad that the anarchy road behaviour here makes it dangerous for those of us who attempt to drive safely and sanely, and within the rules of Thai laws.

No problem with them reducing accidents and saving lives but it never ends there. I hate driving back home as the slightest error comes with a hefty fine, even if it was never going to cause an accident. Even so, didn't stop the maniacs trying to kill me twice on the same day. Of course there were no cameras where the insanity happened so they got away with it.

Some of us been here long enough to know it won't make an iota of difference in the driving skills of road users.

It's just a waste of public money.

This is of course presuming they have registration plates fitted and the vehicle is registered!

If you get a ticket, its because you had too much bad karma. You should go to the temple to make merit so that in the future, you don't get a ticket.

 

Not quite sure how this will lead to fewer deaths. In fact, the increased journeys to the temple will result in more deaths!

Good idea, if the system works. CCTV quality been really poor in the past.  I am sure the locals will think twice if they have to pay a fine and try to follow the law.

In the States, people put on dealer plates. The cops assume they are new bought cars and don't bother them. This may catch on in LOS.

That's almost exactly what I was told years ago when I said smoking restrictions were here to stay.
