March 11, 20188 yr question about buying/registering/insuring a car/motorcycle. i have a non-o (ret), and thai car+moto licenses. gf does not have a license. i really don't want her to drive. i want to buy a car and/or bike and want to minimize the hassle. will buy used, no financing. can gf register the car/bike without a license? i've read that the vehicle is insured, not the driver, so that anyone using the vehicle is covered. can the owner without a license buy the insurance? can i buy the insurance for a vehicle in her name? if (when!) i'm driving/riding and stopped, registration and insurance in her name, what do i need to show i have "permission" to use the vehicle?

Unless you just want to give away a nice parting/participation gift..... If she's mentioning this or promoting this = don't.....If you've already told her you're screwed....Just put it in your own name....

March 11, 20188 yr You can do all that you are asking... i.e. Your Girlfriend can own the vehicle (in her name), she can also have the insurance in her name with an option for any driver even if she doesn't have a licence (as they never ask for the licence details when purchasing an insurance policy). However, the question which really needs to be asked is, why would you do that? It's your car - Put it in your name..... Is getting an 'Affirmation of Residence' that difficult? If you've carried out a 90 day report you can get 'Affirmation of Residence' from Immigration. Or, you can obtain an 'Affirmation of Residence' from your Embassy (expensive).

Insurance asked for details and a photo copy of my Thai licence when I brought my last Lump. OP put it in your name as others have said.

March 12, 20188 yr My car was registered to my wife, she does not have a car driving licence. No problem, actually easier now, as an <deleted> rear-end ended the car while it was parked. Totally wrecked, I didn't have to say anything as it was registered in wifes name...
March 12, 20188 yr Our car is in the Wife's name and she does not have a license. A few years back had an increase in insurance premium following an accident. To reduce the cost got the policy on a named driver basis. Despite the car ownership being in the Wife's name the insurance company (Viriyah) was happy to have me a sole driver.

I bought cars from a dealer, that are running with my name in the Tabian Rot. NO PROBLEMS, and not difficult. The dealer takes care of the registration, and you see on the invoice how much you paid for the car. As mentioned above, unless you want to make a nice gift, or create the opportunity for a finance company to give a loan to the owner of the car.

March 12, 20188 yr Your wife can own a car or motorbike, but cannot legally drive without a Drivers License. A foreigner can own a car or motorbike, but the Land Transport Office will most likely wish to see a proof of address, which often is a letter from the local Immigration confirming the address you report there, which can be obtained at most places for a small fee (up to 500 baht).

If the OP has been misled that putting the vehicle in his name is problematic it may be doubly relevant. When I first bought my truck second hand, I put it straight into my name. Although a decade ago a new motorcycle I bought the shop made a lot of fuss about registering it to me so we made it easy for them and put it in my partner's name, then quickly transferred it to my name ourselves.

If you put it in her name there is a chanceyou will lose all if she up and leaves you. I have seen this done to another foreigner with a new car and gf
March 13, 20188 yr Author just to clarify.....this would be an older second/third-hand pickup for around town and fetching vittles. $3K max if what i see in the classifieds is correct. if she leaves me and takes the truck, and that's all i lose, i'll write it off and consider myself lucky. was thinking any day without dealing with thai behoerde is a good day, and it would be simpler to keep it all thai. and what about accidents? "they" say the foreigner is always at fault, even when not, and is treated like winning the lottery. any advantage in that situation to having no foreigner documentation?

Dash cam solves most of that....Paperwork at the Land/Trans office is simple with proof of residency....... If you buy it for her you'll be obligated for all repairs big & small as long as you own them...... This is also going to open a big door towards more expectations "in her name" - don't think this will go unnoticed by family & advice givers (hers)..... It's always good to have that degree of individual separation - in both directions....Helps cut off that entitlement/welfare/expectant mentality (from all parties)..... What looks little to you is going to look big to someone with no wheels, licence, or known driving aptitude.....Don't fool yourself, if she crashes badly - somehow it's going to come back to you unpleasantly.....After all, you've provided the means & a certain level of moral culpability......

March 14, 20188 yr Sure they can buy car with no license. But please learn from my experience a drivers license is fairly inexpensive even if she has to go to driving school. My wife refused to get license license I went on business trip and she wrecked our insured car. Because no license not covered. It cost 160,000 baht to fix a car we paid 300,00o baht for.
