Four Chon Buri males, one just 14 years old, are in police custody accused of gang-raping a 13-year-old girl, recording it on video and demanding Bt3,000 to keep the clip offline.

Chon Buri police chief Pol Maj General Nanthachat Supamongkol said the two older suspects, ages 29 and 18, were on Tuesday ordered to re-enact the July 2 assault in which the girl was handcuffed.

Citizens crowding in to watch demanded they be given long prison sentences. The two were reportedly employed as rescue workers but were unpopular in the neighbourhood because they drove at high speeds and used the siren unnecessarily.

Natthapat Neewong, 29, and the 18-year-old, a Cambodian identified only as Lert, were arrested on Monday along with two Thai boys, 16 and 14, whose names are being withheld due to their youth.

Nanthachat said they had confessed to the crime and would be charged with several offences including rape of a minor.

Police had not yet found the video allegedly used in the extortion attempt, he said.

Just give them to the citizens instead. I am sure they can think of a just punishment

Pathetic; just because they are teens they can commit a crime and be anonymous.

If this had happened in the USA the two boys would be treated the same as in Thailand.  Their names would not be released publicly.  If convicted and sentenced they would probably be looking at about a year in juvenile detention but would have to register as a sex offender upon release.

I hope they turn them over to civilians

Which would be a better deterrent as what the "kill them" TV-brigade over here is shouting.

Surely there are many who think that to kill is the solution, forgetting that the death penalty makes crime more criminal.

If found guilty beyond any doubt, I recommend The Judas Cradle, carried out in public.

This punishment is sure to help deter future crimes of rape against little girls.

Unfortunately it is the same in most western countries.. In Australia minors charged with even the most gross of crimes have to have their names suppressed as well as their minor aged victims..

Just about as sick as it can get.

Is that a fact?

Around 250,000 youth are tried, sentenced or incarcerated as adults in the United States every year. On any given day, around 10,000 juveniles are housed in adult jails and prisons – 7,500 in jails and 2,700 in prisons, respectively.

Sad, but true.

Yes, they face serious charges but with children there is a greater chance of rehabilitation so what's the point in ruining their lives so early with public stigma?

Possibility, in SOME American states, after a court hearing with the state requesting they be tried as adults, the judge could order they be tried as adults.  Of course the defense lawyers would challenge the judges decision.
