My sartorial regime

 

Shower daily 2 times

clean the  teeth twice

Hair short number 1 

goatee beard trimmed weekly must admit i have designer stubble shave 2/3 times a week

 

shorts and T shirt for day exercising etc  with shoes trainers or deck shoes

evening  always Levis 501 jeans some pairs old faded but always clean (one pair patched )

shirt with button down collar prefer long sleeve rolled up, i prefer good quality thicker bright shirts ( not flowery hideous ones)

 

yes overweight by about 6 kilos hence exercise cut down on beer here in Thailand as not a great fan of it , eat very little rice as i prefer Basmati not Thai white but sadly UK visits food and beer put it back

There must be a motivation. If all the pretty girls would ignore me and best case tell me I have to lose weight then probably I would be motivated. But that is not the case in Thailand.

Some people say they like to exercise. Really? I tried it a couple of times and I never liked it.

Possibly people live longer if they are not overweight and if they exercise and don't drink and don't smoke and don't eat this and that. I really don't care if I live 5 years longer but don't enjoy life because I have to "behave".

Just asked the wife about this issue. She told me that Thais see farangs who dress sloppily as low-class, which is pretty funny when you think about it. I asked her about dressing up for the bank; she said not necessary because they know that 'you' have money, which excuses anything and everything in Thailand. She also said that going to any government office, including immigration, a person should dress more 'respectfully', meaning long pants and sleeved shirt; never a wife-beater. The only time I've ever put on long pants, jeans, is to go to a Thai wedding or leaving on a jet plane. For me, the weather precludes dressing anything but very comfortably. She added that my 'broken' t-shirts -- I've got about 200 of them, some dating back 30 years or more, in various stages of falling apart but no wife-beaters -- are terrible, that I should only wear them in the house, never outside. I'm going to take her suggestion seriously. My personal comfort is not worth offending others or embarrassing her. I can just as easily wear a t-shirt without any holes in it. I draw the line at long sleeves.

 

There are a lot of German-speaking people in the north of Koh Samui in Maenam and Bang Po. They invariably have HUGE beer bellies which they proudly display by wearing unbuttoned shirts or wife-beaters that don't cover their stomachs. Even to me, it's disgusting, especially when they come into a bar or restaurant. I know other retired farangs that I'm afraid to get within 2m of, they stink so badly. For the life of me, I cannot imagine how they have Thai girlfriends, some of them for years. Must be the walking ATM syndrome or something.

well, i am overweight now and i get turned off by my own fat.

i also notice i dont wake up with a boner when im fat,

which is depressing all by its own merit

I've read that all of the exercise stuff won't necessarily increase your lifespan, which is encoded in your DNA, but it will make a difference to the quality of the last 5 years. I find exercise so incredibly boring that I'm going to take my chances. If the last 5 years become so onerous, I'll drink more and smoke more to mitigate the downside. ????

Nothing much to add to the other posts here, save to say that if you don't shower, wear unclean clothes and look like a tramp, you deserve to be treated by everyone like a low life hobo. Buck up and take care of yourself and your appearance and respect that others have to put up with you looking like that and if they get too close, smelling your body odour.  I feel real disgust when I come near to anyone, farangs mostly, who smell like my rubbish bin.

I shave my face close if going out at night.  Otherwise a quick going over with the electric razor in the am.  Nose hair dealt with using electric razor attachment

 

Daytime:

Shower, comb hair, apply some baby powder in the pit areas, wear clean untattered clothing and walking sandals, exhibit my friendliest smile and always a happy attitude.   

Nighttime:

Much the same other than wearing long pants, sensible shoes, cologne, maybe some hair gel, and of course carrying a bit more baht 55

I happen to like the natural look.  this is my preference .  a pretty girl does not need make up to be attractive (to me).  Quite the opposite.   I am not overweight,  and in pretty good shape. I dress very comfortably in clean but very casual attire.   When going to offices in the city or the bank I tidy up a bit more.   When I go to my local village town I dress as the natives do .  No one cares.   Generally they do not smell, nor do I.    Country life (and grooming) are different than city appearance requirements.

I have never met a bar girl yet who is not clean and respects her appearance. And many of them are, within reason and the constraints of their job, decent and respectable girls from loving families,  They are just poor and badly educated with little chance of making a decent life for themselves, having very often been used and abused by their Thai men folk.  If you are Thai, you should know this and understand the issues around the Thai bar scene. They are not all low life hustlers. I forgot to add, that contrary to your comment about not respecting Thai bar girl/ farang couples, we farangs are generally not so judgemental about those relationships.  If they are loving and long lasting, they are no different to so called 'normal relationships' and a damn sight better than many.

One time the lawn mower broke. I was wearing my threadbare lawn mowing outfit: holes all over the place in the shirt, more holes in the jeans, holes in the tops of my old running shoes where my big toes poked out. Went down to the local repair shop, they couldn't fix the mower, so ended up continuing on into the big city stilll dressed in my lawn mowing outfit. While the repair shop was working on the mower, decided to kill time walk around town. Noticed a few people looking at me. Started affecting a jaunty gait, swung my arms more than usual, abruptly stopped, scratched my head, and looked behind me every so often just to add to the humorous ragtag affect. Started conversations with a few shopkeepers with the line 'farang mai mii ban ma laew' (the homeless farang has arrived). Got quite a few laughs. Explained what I was doing there and why I was dressed the way I was. People understood and were amused. I don't think anyone thought the less of me as a result. Thais aren't as judgmental about how you dress as some here would have you believe.

A very good point. Learn the Thai language you will repel the bad ones and hopefully attract someone that has nothing to do with the bars or massage shops. Thais can spot a foreigner with a bar girl a mile away. It is such a common sight throughout Thailand. Sloppy foreigner with bar girl. Want the Thais to treat you with respect? Dress well , learn the language, avoid bar girls and foreigners that look like pigs. Hang with better company be polite and chances are good you will be much better off in Thailand. Don,t listen to my advice you deserve what you get. Its that simple.

I think most of the expats from Oz here were baby boomers whose parents went thru the depression years, the swaggie was commonplace especially in the bush.The thought of how you dressed was not an issue..As a kid hand me downs were the norm. Think most are proud of that still!

But I do take care of myself, am well groomed, trim alot of my body hair (as most women do not like alot of body hair on men, regardless of what they say), exercise alot, don't go out in public all scruffy looking, dress cleanly, though casually, and have alot of self respect. 

 

I see some foreigners walking around dressed in ways that do not exactly pay tribute to the outside world.

Every well educated Thai speaks english, so if you have to speak Thai with your gf how does that make you look higher class exactly?
