Plan to reopen five islands to foreign tourists by August

The Tourism and Sports Ministry aims to reopen five islands to foreign tourists in three provinces – Phuket, Krabi and Surat Thani – by August.

 

 

A ministry official revealed today (June 30) that in response to preparations to allow foreign tourists to enter Thailand by August, which is faster than the original schedule of between September and October, the ministry has discussed with the Phuket governor and tourism operators preparations for reopening of five islands in the three provinces.

 

“Initially, we will open five islands – Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao,” the official revealed.

 

“We expect residents in these areas to agree to the move because Phuket relies on tourism revenue when you take into account the province’s gross domestic product,” he said.

 

 

The official also said the criteria to allow foreign tourists to enter the country and travel to these destinations is currently under discussion with the Public Health Ministry.

 

“To start with, we will limit the number of tourists depending on each area’s capability to effectively screen visitors for Covid-19,” he said.

 

“We plan to allow tourists to board a plane to a specified destination. If they have to take a connecting flight via Bangkok, for example, they will be prohibited from travelling in Bangkok,” he made it clear.

I'm seriously worried the ministry may not have thought this through enough. Thailand is basically on lockdown until 31st July and at best allowing in 200 a day. No foreign tourist  in their right mind is going to book a holiday to thailand for the start of August when it's shut to 31st July could (and will) be extended

It's becoming a paintball island. Drop 200 tourists on the island all by themselves (nobody else). Let them have fun for 2 weeks...

Have to keep the bosses happy and the envelopes coming..... if any problems with sickness just dont test for covid and in a worse case scenario they can blame any infection on Burmese workers........let the tills open and the gravy chain start flowing.

My ex #3 at her little hotel in Phuket has had all of one Thai guest in the last 2 weeks, who stayed for 1 night.....  Can't see her business holding out for much longer ????

Another brain dead idea. Most people I know who have been visiting Thailand would like to stay a few days in Bangkok. Especially when having a long overseas flight.

Also, how to get the tourists to Islands who don't have an airport?

By transporting them like infected cattle in buses with police escort?

I'm there now.

It opens tomorrow July 1.

However for first couple of weeks, no booze on beach. Supposed to be also none in restaurants. They will get around the restaurant part of it. Also need to make booking. Thai partner states it's done via some app.

Right. I'm very interested in this point as I'm married to a Thai and may have to use that to get back in. If I go to one of these destinations rather than our home, maybe I won't have to do quarantine?
