A 30-year-old man who believed the coronavirus was a hoax and attended a “Covid party” died after being infected with the virus, according to the chief medical officer at a Texas hospital.

The official, Dr. Jane Appleby of Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, said the man died after deliberately attending a gathering with an infected person to test whether the coronavirus was real.

In her statements to news organizations, Dr. Appleby said the man had told his nurse that he attended a Covid party. Just before he died, she said the patient told his nurse: “I think I made a mistake. I thought this was a hoax, but it’s not.”

That's the whole point of a covid party...either you make it, or you don't!

Same as with a Russian Roulette party, but much less risky...

Americans have the covid party, Chinese have the communist party...to each his own fun...

Survival of the fittest and brightest.  Of course when you believe what someone tells you as gospel without doing your own research to confirm things it only leads down the road to the hospital or better yet the Morgue.  RIP young man

This is probably one of the most balanced reports on this particular incident I have seen. Seems the NY Times still tries to uphold at least the appearance of journalism standards.

They put the words "Covid party" in quotes; admit there is no supporting evidence to attest that this was genuinely a Covid party; that in fact past reports of Covid parties have fallen apart; that the San Antonio health department said its contact tracers did not have any information “that would confirm" (editor added "or deny" in parenthesis) that such an event happened; that the family of the deceased declined to comment; and that the only source of information was the word of the chief medical officer.

I obviously don't think the chief medical officer made this up, but in my experience doctors often have selective hearing, especially when they have a passionate belief in wanting to get patients to act in a certain way. They tend to embelish...a lot in many cases. I can certainly believe the good doctor may have added some questionable details and color to the story in order to make a point she strongly believed in.

So this incident really does nothing to help any of us. Everyone knows this virus is not a "hoax", but that doesn't mean that the lockdown, close the borders and stay at home brigade is taking the right approach to dealing with this new predicament the human race is in. This is still a battle of different personal value systems, rather than any kind of genuine science.

It doesn't mention whether he had underlying conditions, ie obese, diabetes etc. Seems strange that a 30 yr old dies from Covid.

Not if you understand the scope of the disease.  This is from an interview with Dr. Larry Brilliant, a specialist in pandemics:

So now we can begin to understand that this virus attacks the circulatory system, it attacks the vascular and nervous systems, it attacks the respiratory system, it attacks our ability to bring in oxygen. That’s why people can go to the hospital and be on their phone, not in any respiratory distress, but have oxygen saturation in the 50s, which in the old days we’d think of as you’re near death. It also makes you understand why you can get these Covid toes, why you can lose your sense of taste or smell, why you can have a stroke. This virus attacks blood vessels, it creates blood clots. That is probably one of the reasons why it causes strokes. We have a very large number of deaths due to kidney failure...

What is clear is that it's very difficult to get a sense of perspective regarding this virus.

Well, Covid-19 seems like other viruses like SARS and Ebola, about which scientists learn more with time.  SARS had a low infection rate, but a high fatality rate, and it only became contagious some time after the initial infection.  It takes a while to observe that.  The 1918 Flu virus was especially lethal to people in their twenties probably because the older and younger cohorts had experienced exposure to a closely related virus early in childhood resulting in limited lifelong immunity.  The cohort with the high fatality rate had been exposed to a different virus in early childhood and was therefore defenseless against the 1918 H1N1 variant.  This explanation was only reached a few years ago after nearly 100 years of study.

So, Covid-19's peculiarities will be discovered over time, probably less time than other viruses because so many scientists are focused on it simultaneously.

where was the party?
who was the infected guest?
who were the other attendees?

proof of party or it didn't happen.

without any of this
it is just hearsay from a nurse
quoting a dead person who is unable to defend himself

The only person I know who has contracted the desease is onr of the two or three fittest people that I know. In her thirties, into fitness, yoga and rock climbing. Confirmed as being infected in May and according to a FB update a couple of days ago is still suffering from the effects (although, fortunately not to the extent that she's hospitalised).
