No mask, no entry: Video of automatic face scanner at Thai store goes viral

A video showing automatic doors installed at a shop in Thailand that only open if the person approaching is wearing a face mask has gone viral.

 

The video, posted by Twitter user Niall Harbison, who lives on Koh Samui, shows how the automatic screens installed at the front of the store scan the faces of shoppers to make sure they are wearing a mask, as well as reading their temperature. 

 

“My local shops in Thailand. In 2 seconds scans my temperature and to see if wearing mask. Doors don’t open if not. 3 cases in 100+ days here. Removes awkward mask arguments for staff as well”, Niall wrote in his Tweet. 

 

The video has now gone viral on Twitter where it has amassed more than 6.6 million views.

People commenting on the video were full of praise for the use of the technology. 

 

“That’s really brilliant”, one user wrote.

 

“My store should really be doing this”, wrote another.

 

“That is awesome but it wouldn't work here because the anti mask people dont respect society or its rules.  They would either jump the gate or take the mask off the minute they are past it”, read one Tweet.

 

Another user made a comparison between the COVID-19 situation in the UK and Thailand:

 

“Thailand

Population: 69m

Covid-19 deaths: 59

 

UK population: 66m

Covid-19 deaths 42,350

 

I was in Thailand Jan to Apr, the difference in Covid-19 approach between Thailand and UK was staggering!

More checks to get into a Thai mall than to get into the UK”.

 

However, another user described the face scanner as “nonsense”

 

“I wish people would stop championing and normalising this nonsense.

 

“We will never get back to 2019 Normal if we continue down this road.

 

“A global over-reaction of epic proportions - we've been utterly played by the Chinese over this one. I bet they can't believe it themselves”.

Totally agree with those 3 statements.

 

They have this setup at South Pattaya  Tesco Lotus...you can just walk in through  the  "out"  door ????

Thailand will sky rocket on the next innovation index update!

So, you put ze mask on just before stepping to the CCP surveillance thingy (sunglasses a bonus so face recognition won't work) and take it off 0.2secs later. Thai style.

According to one regular Thairang poster all Thais already wear them.

today saw the first one & thought I had arrived at the airport or something instead of the local tesco!

are we expecting these to spread to every store/bar? surely during the actual pandemic there were no checks & now with ZERO it's getting worse & worse. the mind buggles...maybe it's a test for the phuket airport? ????

not that excellent as someone could put on a mask to pass through the machine and then take the mask off... about as effective as a mall security guard, or a chocolate teapot...

In a 7-Eleven here in Pattaya I have seen a device where you have to stand in front of it and it checks your temperature - no staff needed anymore.

Yes, and then they wait 1 minute for a person with mask entering or exiting and just walk in. 

Masks and social distancing have been proven to be more effective than nothing at all. 

One of the main reasons why Thailand doesn't have a crisis here is because of the insistence on wearing masks, as well as halting the inflow of tourists. Things other countries haven't done and are suffering for it now.

I swear, it's as though some people here actually want to see a massive covid outbreak here, as though that would be a good thing. Especially considering that fat, old white guys with underlying medical conditions (i.e. probably 3/4s of the TV membership) are the most likely to die from an infection.

I seriously doubt most of you could survive an actual crisis with the way you whine about having to wear a mask when you are in a public place for a couple hours. If the in a real way (i.e. like another world war or epidemic on the scale of the Spanish Flu) - most of you couldn't cope.

Yes my local Tesco Lotus has the same. At present there is also a store person manning the station but while attending to me two guys walked straight behind into the exit lane and into the store.

Agreed. The lack of "robustness" displayed by so many, when asked to take a simple precaution which may prove to be a minor inconvenience is astonishing.

Wearing a mask is not only safer but shows a sense of consideration for another.

Nothing new, they had thermal imaging at DM airport during the SARS outbreak. Covid has brought about lower cost installations, Iconsiam has had it from the start of covid.
