Thailand’s deadly roads: 72 people killed on Monday, almost 12,000 killed this year

In a week in which it has been admitted that measures to mitigate the appalling death toll on the Thai roads have been an abject failure, Monday was a disastrous day.

Deaths at the scene of accidents were 72.

In reality when deaths on the way to and in hospitals are added to the totals the death toll is considerably more, notes Thaivisa.

Daily News continued their campaign to keep the issue in the news.

They reported on a horror smash in which a Chevrolet Optra plowed into the back of a pick-up containing workers.

The pick-up, in the far right lane, was propelled onto its side spilling the workers into the path of a 10 wheel truck carrying 40 tons of metal mesh.

The heavily loaded truck was unable to brake in time and three people were instantly crushed to death.

The death toll on the first two days of the month is already 99.

In 2018 13,956 died at the scene of accidents. In 2019 it was 14,907. So far this year it is 11,905.

The likely death toll each year has been admitted to be in excess of 20,000 by deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwan in 2018.

Some safety advocates put it between 24,000 and 26,000 deaths making the Thai roads some of the deadliest in the world.

This week came news at a Zoom conference that a ten year accident reduction plan had been a complete failure over the last decade with deaths per 100,000 now at 29 compared to 20 in 2011.

The decade long campaign had hoped to reduce the figure to 10 per 100,000 of the population.

Lack of common sense and lack of law enforcement is a bad combination. Sadly, it only seems to worsen.

This subject was discussed so many times i have lost count, and always when road death toll jump up, and the same responses and replies, no one is really take this matter seriously, of course, lip service is abound but real action wide and far in between and so it shall remain...

Lucky Songkran was cancelled also the time spent in Covid lockdown otherwise the figures would be much higher

Clearly we need a new ten year plan! That'll fix it!

Covid...59. Thai roads...20,000. Probably more like 50,00 when considering those who died of their injuries soon after ????  Somehow I feel a strange lack of reason in the reaction to the virus !

Road deaths are irrelevant. Be very, very, scared of Covid19. That's a real killer, it has killed near 20 hours worth of road deaths.

Zero is done about the meat market on the roads every day, but they get 1 new case of covid and they s**t themselves, close everything down. Go figure

A million year plan would not be enough!

It’s crazy how close Thais will tailgate each other. Your meant to leave space of 2-3 car lengths ahead you when driving, especially on highways.

Your typical thai driver follows the car ahead so closely, it’s almost bumper to bumper. How are you meant to stop in time, if the car ahead suddenly brakes?!? This is just basic road safety.

The authorities must be very proud of this remarkable achievement.

Because there is nothing obvious for the dictator to ban. Could be an excuse for a curfew.

So many small trucks are miles over weight or their good stacked so high that if they get a tire blow out the truck loses control. I have seen it happen but no one seems to care.

god forbid if you farang and involved, this is why its stupid to buy a car here and drive.

My thoughts entirely. Whats the point of highlighting these stats if at the end of the day nobody does anything about them. Same old repetitive story that nobody wants to tackle.

They obviously dont talk about it

Totally unbelieivable  that this subject comes up regularably and no-one does nothing.

Maybe it's the roads that should be closed down and not the country.  Thousands killed every year on the roads and virtually zero killed by Covid. I suppose it's better than a world war to reset/cover up an economic collapse.

Unreal!!! A scary thing would be to do the math on the deaths prevented by the whole C. shutdown and add them to the total...

Time and time again this topic keeps rearing it's ugly head. And time and time again we all keep saying get a proper police force that will enforce the laws. Get a proper driving test instead of that stupid DLT course  and actually test them on the road. But until that happens the death toll will never ever change!!

72 fatalities in one day is staggering....remembering that the count is at the site.....

Like 6 football teams!

No, not lack of common sense, lack of education. I don't know why nobody is getting this. The Thai driver's licence is a joke compared to western countries and you don't even have to have a proper scholing to drive a car. Just do a silly test which have nothing to do with road safety and a theoretical test, that requires no skills whatsoever, just a temporarely knowledge of some basic traffic laws and then forget about it. That's how people are sent on the road here. No skills, no scholing and nearly no knowledge of the way to drive on roads. And then you are wondering why so many accidents?

1. Nothing new.

2. Their own fault, because I do saw and see millions of traffic offences.

3. Thai in general do not care about traffic laws.

4. Nothing will change, as long the Police does not enforce the traffic laws as in Germany or Switzerland.

So, let them die.
