Trump takes fighting stance as election swings toward Biden

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As former Vice President Joe Biden moved closer to winning the White House, President Donald Trump adopted a fighting posture on Thursday, making false claims to undermine a vote that was not going his way.

While Biden, a Democrat, called for calm and patience, Republican Trump, without offering evidence, said his opponents were engaging in fraud and election theft, accusations he has been making long before Election Day.

"If you count the legal votes I easily win," Trump said during remarks the White House, his first public appearance since Wednesday morning. "This is a case where they're trying to steal an election. They're trying to rig an election, and we can't let that happen."

Trump suggested he had won states that have been called in favor of Biden and sharply criticized polling before the election that he said was designed to suppress the vote because it favored the Democrat.

Polls this year, similar to the 2016 election that he won, predicted a much weaker electoral performance by Trump than he achieved.

The president, a former reality TV star who regularly plays to cameras and crowds, took no questions from reporters in his first appearance since early Wednesday morning.

The president's comments came as the election results continued to swing toward his Democratic rival.

A somber mood prevailed at the White House. Aides to the president said they remained cautiously optimistic that he still had a path to re-election, while conceding that he may lose.

Trump worked from the Oval Office on Thursday in what was otherwise largely an empty West Wing. Many of his senior staff were huddled at the campaign's headquarters in nearby Virginia.

"He's very engaged, he's monitoring, talking to all the states. It doesn't look good, but this guy wants to keep fighting," said one Trump confidante, speaking on the condition of anonymity. "He's in a fighting mood right now. He's not melancholy or dejected. But the path is getting harder and harder."

The president's campaign has launched multiple legal challenges in the states where votes are still being counted.

One White House official said he was confident the strategy of legal challenges would prevail, even if television networks call the race for Biden once final vote counts in states such as Georgia, Arizona and Pennsylvania come in.

Another lamented the loss of support among suburban women that helped doom Trump's chances in Wisconsin, while lauding the president for changing the Republican Party for decades to come by attracting more Latino and African-American votes.

Some things are sacred.

The vote count determines the winner.

Not a wannabe dictator.

But he is going to continue to be very ugly about this and if he ever concedes the moon will explode.

What I find nastiest about all of this, is that if Trump has any evidence of the massive fraud he suggests is under way, why is he unable to produce any evidence to support it? His supporters are getting worked up because they believe him unquestioningly. When questioned about evidence he left the stage.

Interesting article from the Guardian suggesting his TV broadcast last night broke records for the number of untruths.

Have to agree with your post, however I would say that what I find strange about this and much of the other rubbish and lies he has been spewing over the years, is that supposedly intelligent people believe what he says??

Perhaps I've misjudged the intelligence level of the trump supporter.

Politics and sex both seem to make otherwise intelligent people make very stupid decisions. A rational person can see immediately that there are massive holes in Trumps case, and no evidence to plug them. Blinded by the previous lies they believed, some are unable to stop themselves getting sucked in.

Luckily these lies won't be worth much without proof. He can't take things to court without any proof. But it scary how low he can sink. But many predicted this before and its on par with his MO.

The Trump followers on this forum are awfully quiet I think they know that they can only win now with dirty tricks.

Though people like me who supported Biden (more to the fact were anti Trump) were wrong too. The polls looked far better for Biden then the real results.

The USA is really divided.

Sadly, the outcome of the vote...no blue wave....indicates the US is a very sick country.

I know plenty of reasonable and intelligent Trump supporters. When it comes to the issues, they tend not to bevery knowledgeable. For instance, most red states now offer expanded Medicaid which is part of Obamacare. 5 red states actually approved of it by referenda. In West Virginia it's made a huge difference. Yet WV voted overwhelmingly for Trump.

It fascinates me.....intelligent beings believing and accepting obvious, outright lies. To a degree I can understand it where they expect to gain as a consequence......but look at religion? How do intelligent, analytical thinkers believe in religion???

So Donny received less than half the votes (about 48%), came second, and still wants to be Top Dog.

He should give Prayut a call. Prayut pulled off a miraculous victory with less than 18% of the votes.
Prayut will show him how it’s done. Palangchart will be laughing at Donny’s amateurism.

The news will become very boring after trump is kicked out of the white house.

No more morning rants.

What will we all do for entertainment

Steve Bannon apparently said Christopher Wray and Anthony Fauci could be beheaded and there heads put on a pike as a warning to federal bureaucrats.

In one way it is fun to watch Trump and his supporters flail and moan and litigate and struggle to come up with new conspiracy theories as to corruption in the election.

In another way it's worrisome to see where this heads if Trump supporters take seriously the stuff he and his cronies are putting forward.

Come on Donald leave with just a tiny tiny shred of dignity if any shreds are left.

To be honest, that’s likely part of why those 68 million uneducated poor folks vote for him. When you’re a loser with nothing to do in your trailer park home, you find enjoyment in someone creating trouble.

Ideally the dumbest person in the country and the president should be two different people!

So someone posts a name and you get to reply with a derisive emoji?

But as far as the electorate goes, scientists vote overwhelminly Democratic.

It could be the US so called empire is in rapid decline. Americans feel too entitled and have gotten fat and lazy. The US now mostly number one in very negative things like gun violence, incarceration rates, covid19 infections and economic inequality
