A 15-year-old Buddhist novice monk in Lampang province was arrested after stealing a scooter on Wednesday so he could “ride to his home in the Northeast”.

After a complaint by the scooter owner at 10am, Mae Ta Station police coordinated with traffic officers to conduct a search for the stolen black Honda Scoopy i.

Later in the afternoon in Phrae province, police were notified of a scooter accident and went to check. The scooter was exactly the same stolen Scoopy i.

The teen at the scene confessed that he grabbed the scooter with a key in it because he missed home in the Northeast and planned to ride back there on the Scoopy i, before which he threw away his robe and stole some of the scooter owner’s clothes, which he put on.

He said his unfamiliarity with the route led him to meet an accident.

The novice was arrested for stealing and later sent back to Mae Ta police station in Lampang for further legal action.

......

He's 15, he's not even supposed to be riding, let alone to be familiar with the route.

But seems to have the skills to nick a bike?

If he'd kept the robes on and stood at the side of the road he would have probably got a lift no problem, many people give lifts to monks.

Good start to the religious life. Perhaps after he has had his party and gotten all the envelopes; spent 3 nights in the monkhood; maybe he'll be able to buy his own scooter.

A long drive from Lampang (Lanna) to Isaan, for example Lampang to Khon Kaen is 544 kilometres and a longtime on the scooter!! He must have missed home very much and he has my sympathy.

Son, where did you get those clothes?

I nicked them

and the bike?

I nicked it

Oh son we are so proud of you.

Then he woke up in the police station cell.

You have to ask...why was he in a temple in Lampang?

The parents picked it to be sufficiently far away so the little <deleted> didn't cause any more issues at home?

He's only a novice.

If he'd been an expert, he would have stolen a car ...

Might swipe your apple watch off your wrist as he ties the white string onto it....

"Monk on the run."  Sounds like a song.

But a 15 year old kid of who knows what background and in what monastic setting ... who knows how he's been treated?  Or what he's made of?  The (former?) Governor of Loei  came up from humble beginnings and is apparently a real stand-up guy.  Studied in the Wat in his spare time while being a bus boy, brick layer and whatnot.  Eventually managed to graduate college.  This kid may not have a clue.

Not an unusual attempted solution !

The keys were in it.  I think even I could manage that one.  ????

The poor kid was most likely forced to become a monk by his parents, to save money. See this happen a lot without doing any good.

You'd think a monk, novice or not, would have a sufficiently powerful amulet to ward off an accident!

Licenced 15-year olds can legally ride bikes under 110cc, i.e. Honda Scoopy i.

I didn't know that.  Thanks.
