In recorded call, Trump pressures Georgia election official to change results - Washington Post

Featured Replies

Huh, thanks for all the replies; and all because I thought that Pres. Trump had made a stupid move in this call. Wonder if it will affect the Georgia senate elections as the pollsters give a fairly close averages the candidates. This year in the USA certainly has not been a 'mainstream year'. ????

  • That’s an attempted coup imo dude sounds just like some low life mob boss on a side note I have tremendous respect for Georgia’s sec.of state to stand up to potus there is a man of principle and true

  • Sad times when people question the reliability of sites like WaPo.  And fall for the conspiracy theories on fake news websites.  Stunning.

  • I'm curious to know which excuse his supporters will find, this time.

I was referring to the scientific approach which I clearly stated in my post; but according to you then a good proportion of conjectures alternative explanations in all fields (including politics) are fake news and/or conspiracy theories.

Now To stay on topic Pres. Trump was on the telephone when he made the highly contentious call but he might not have been able to do if someone hadn't gone outside mainstream ideas to invent the telephone. This is what A.G. Bell had to say '...later that if he had understood electricity at all, he would have been too discouraged to invent the telephone. Everyone else 'knew' it was impossible to send voice signals over wire.' (source Jason Morris, PBS...) How many others went outside mainstream to bring us where we are today...Nah, all fake news to you, I suppose.

For all you have read you seem to have missed the salient point of the scientific method.

It is NOT "thinking outside the box". It IS the experimentation and constant peer review of theories.

This is what separates Bell and Galileo from alchemists and common nutters...

Then lies about the call on twitter. Goose.

The lies were all from the legacy media. They just made up the story and quotes. CNN, Washington Post, all of them falsely claiming they corroborated the story, when in fact it was just made up. Just incredible this made up garbage was used heavily in the impeachment trial, what a total farce!!

Did I miss the thread retracting all these garbage anti-Trump claims?

"The Post initially reported Trump had told an official working in Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger's office to "find the fraud" in the state, which he lost narrowly to Joe Biden, and that she would be a "national hero" if she did.

However, a newly emerged recording of the Dec. 23 call found he didn't use those words. "

Deflection.  There's an audio recording of another call.  Asking to "find the votes".  Avoid Fox News at all costs.  They make sure stories all the time, and even admit it.

You're getting your lies....eh, facts all mixed up.  The WaPo did issue a correction which is what real journalists do.  The wording may have changed, but the meaning did not.  Trump did try to pressure GA officials, from the Governor all the way down, to break the law.  This is fact.  Who gives a flying frick what exact words he used.  Trump is a scumbag criminal who should be charged, if not for this, then for a long list of other criminal activity.

sorry Jeff, they just made it up.

The Wapo has since retracted their false quotes. Rather ironic with your regular crowing about others needing better sources for their news!

“The recording revealed that The Post misquoted Trump’s comments on the call, based on information provided by a source. Trump did not tell the investigator to ‘find the fraud’ or say she would be ‘a national hero’ if she did so.

No, the source paraphrased but with clearly the same meaning.  Whatever....believe what you want.  Trump lost the election and will be indicted soon.  That's all I care about.

One mistake and you gave up on them.  Yet Fox News makes them all the time, and you are OK with that?  Biased a bit are we?

There's an audio recording.  Got it?  Hard to make that up.  Get your facts straight.

Trump deserves bashing for this.  Sad some don't get it and try to defend his actions with regards to the Big Lie.  Boggles my mind especially considering his supporters claim to be patriots.  Right...

From your link.  You proved he asked Georgia officials to commit voter fraud.  Thanks!!

The story being corrected is separate from another Washington Post article in January about a conversation between Mr Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

Mr Trump’s conversation with Ms Watson came more than a week before his January 2 call with Mr Raffensperger.

Audio recording of that phone call was released at the time the story was published. In the hour-long conversation, Mr Trump told the Republican official that “I just want to find 11,780 votes”.

Apparently, according to Fox News, they used a single source and didn't check if it was true.

Very uncharacteristic of WaPo.  They vet their news quite well.  At least they made the correction.

According to Fox News the other news organisations that published the same claims contacted the same source as the Washington Post and also did not verify the information.

Fox News, like Newsmax and OAN, are not credible media outlets.  WaPo is very credible.

I did a google search on this.  It's mostly coming up in the fake news right wing media outlets.

Wasn't WAPO the paper that called Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi the leader of ISIS who Trump took out "an austere religious scholar"!! What a joke of a publication!! Good to see them grovel in a retraction. Hope they get sued with all the other fake news media like NYT, CNN, MSNBC etc like with the Covington kids.

As @Jeffr2 correctly pointed out above, the correction the Washington Post ran involved a second Trump phone call, this one involving a GA state elections investigator, NOT the other larger call involving the GA Sec. of State where Trump's infamous (and now under criminal investigation by a GA DA), "find" the votes comment was made (and supported by a publicly released audio recording of that call). No questions or issues have been raised about the accuracy or credibility of the reporting on the GA Sec. of State call.

Regarding the Trump / GA Sec of State phone call:

https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-us-canada-55524676

Regarding the GA DA criminal investigation of Trump:

https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/16/politics/georgia-trump-investigation-evidence-expert-hired/index.html

"Willis opened a criminal investigation into Trump for his "attempts to influence the administration of the 2020 Georgia general election."

In a letter to numerous Georgia state election officials, including Raffensperger, Willis requested that they preserve documents related to Trump's January phone call in which he pushed Raffensperger to "find" votes to reverse his election loss.

Raffensperger's office also launched its own probe into Trump's attempts to overturn the election, an inquiry that includes a review of both that call and another phone call the then-President made to a Georgia election official."

The Post's media critic did a column on the 2nd phone call correction (not retraction) in which he noted the following:

"We asked The Post about claims that the newspaper’s action amounts to a retraction and about its reliance on one source for the quotes. In a statement, The Post responded:

'We corrected the story and published a separate news story last week — at the top of our site and on the front page — after we learned that our source had not been precise in relaying then President Trump’s words. We are not retracting our January story because it conveyed the substance of Trump’s attempt to influence the work of Georgia’s elections investigators.'
...
The former president’s partisans will attempt to memorialize The Post’s story as a fabrication or “fake news.” But a central fact remains: As the Journal’s recording attests, Trump behaved with all the crooked intent and suggestion that he brought to every other crisis of his presidency."

Can't wait until the former president is jailed so we can forget all about him.

I doubt he will ever see one day in a jail, irrespective of any convictions, also how does the country provide his 24 security (to which he is entitled) in a correctional facility?

That's not a reason to not lock him up if convicted.

Do a little research.

"...contemporaries of al-Baghdadi describes him in his youth as being shy, unimpressive, a religious scholar, and a man who eschewed violence. For more than a decade, until 2004, he lived in a room attached to a small local mosque in Tobchi, a poor neighbourhood on the western fringes of Baghdad, inhabited by both Shia and Sunni Muslims.[26]"  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Bakr_al-Baghdad

It's common for extremist fanatics to begin as religious scholars.

Actually, he even got a Doctorate in Islamic science from an Islamic University in Bagdad.

That's easy.  The Congress will pass a law removing some of the benefits for a former president who is convicted of a felony.

Or just say 'now in jail where there is security, no need for additional'.

Its ok, his lawyer now admits she was lying. Saying no reasonable person would believe what she said.

So when it comes to actual evidence and saying under oath, as usual, it falls apart.

And It's completely incoherent! (Quotes from your sources)

One the one hand: "One of Donald Trump's lawyers has claimed in a defamation trial that her claims of voter fraud were so outlandish that reasonable people would not take them seriously"

But on the other hand: "She believed the allegations then and she believes them now," the filing read" ????????????????????

She's stuck between a rock and a hard place. She must claim that people did not believe it so that no damage has been done. But she also needs to claim she believed what she said, in order to show she did not intend to defame Dominion! ????
