Tourists miss Pattaya and will return, says tourism chief

Pattaya's secretary of entertainment and tourism gave mixed messages in an interview with media outlet Ruk Siam News.

Damrongkiat Phinitkarn said that the second wave of the virus had not come as such of a shock as the first wave of the pandemic to Pattaya's entertainment industry. He described the industry as ready for whatever is thrown at them.

That being said, the pubs, bars, clubs and discos were suffering greatly. Many had closed when they didn't have to.

This was because the public have been so spooked by the second wave that they are not going out at all.

He described bars and clubs as being socially responsible in closing. They were experiencing more than 50% fewer customers.

Some who had pinned hopes on Christmas trade had had their hopes dashed.

Asked about recovery he trotted out the usual observations that Pattaya is a world class resort. Chinese, Koreans, Hong Kongers and Europeans were waiting for the country to reopen.

As soon as it does they will head to Pattaya first.

"They 'khit theung" (miss) Pattaya", he claimed.

He put his hopes on Thailand rolling out a vaccine from England.

The reality of the New Year at Pattaya was well summed up in a vlog by popular blogger "Dan About Thailand", notes Thaivisa.

The challenge is getting out of and then back into Oz, the government is making it difficult in both directions with over 30,000 people trying to get back into the country but no flights and beds in isolation.

...and will there be anywhere left for them to stay after hotel closures, anywhere to eat after restaurant closures and any bars to drink after they've packed up and gone home.

The world famous snake farm...

And stop inflating the baht. Otherwise there are plenty of other countries offering better deals.

I have heard that Thai will stop flying to Perth. Only Sydney and Melbourne. That will stop a lot of Aussie  tourists, if it ever happens.

Air Asia will fill the gap....

we will take your vaccine but not your tourists.

no shot for you 1 year !!

No tourists will be allowed to come to Thailand, without quarantine when they return to their home after their holiday, until a significant portion of the Thai population has been vaccinated, and that could take 18 months to 2 years, possibly longer.

Not really lot of people don't like stopovers

Makes no odds to me, we have a good house, my wife us an excellent cook, we dont eat out or go out drinking. . Long as I can get back to my family, makes no difference to me if mass tourism comes back or not. I only fear for those that lose their jobs, hotels, restaurants and livelihoods
