Democrats take control of U.S. Senate as they win second race in Georgia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats on Wednesday completed a sweep of the two U.S. Senate seats up for grabs in runoff elections in Georgia, giving the party control of the chamber and boosting the prospects for President-elect Joe Biden's ambitious legislative agenda.

Edison Research projected victory for Jon Ossoff, a documentary filmmaker, on Wednesday afternoon after fellow Democrat Raphael Warnock, a Baptist preacher, was projected as the victor in his Senate race in the early hours of Wednesday.

In Tuesday's runoffs, Warnock defeated Kelly Loeffler, who was appointed a year ago to fill the seat of a retiring senator, and Ossoff beat David Perdue, who served a single term in the Senate.

Ossoff drew 50.3% and Perdue had 49.7% with 98% of the expected vote in, according to Edison. That pushed Ossoff's lead beyond the margin needed to avoid a possible recount, and Edison said it expected his lead to grow.

The double Democratic triumph splits the Senate 50-50, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris's tie-breaking vote giving Democrats control of the chamber. Each of the 50 states is represented by two senators in the 100-seat chamber.

The sweep by the two Democratic candidates gives their party control of both chambers of Congress and the White House for the first time in a decade, dramatically shifting the balance of power in Washington.

Stacey Abrams.  And Trump's incompetence.  He must be astounded, this is the first time his incompetence in office has caught up with him.

Thank you Stacey Abrams.  Please expand your fight against voter suppression to include Florida.

Let the GOP bloodbath begin. Trump lost those two seats for the Republicans with one phone call.

The right to vote is a big deal in American.  Voter suppression has been going on for centuries in Georgia.  Directed at the black votes.  Stacy did a great job getting these people to vote.  Kudos to her for all the work.  This is what American's all about.  Equality for all.

Twitter has locked 45's account, has given him a warning of being banned. He's sitting in a room all alone with no way to tweet his instructions. Normalcy is slowly returning. WHAT a freaking nightmare this has been!

Legally won but they changed the rules to allow mega postal ballots etc. Not sure how the GOP will counter this eventually but it sure doesn't lead to healing and peace.

And this is why we have the capitol currently under siege and 45's Twitter account locked. Utter nonsense, delusional people believing his lies. "Mega postal ballots" IS the democratic process. To suggest otherwise is voter suppression. As to your "etc" - as usual 45 supporters can't make cogent arguments with facts because facts prove you wrong.

Comments like this don't lead to healing and peace.  The election had NO significant fraud.  Accept it, move on.  Sad some still fall for the lies from Trump.

It's not like there was a pandemic out there.

Yes, many states legally changed voting rules to expand mail-in and early voting, and actively encouraged people to do so in order to prevent the spread of the virus.  It was a smart move.  The fact that making it easy to vote led to an increase in legal voting is a bonus.

BTW, the time place to challenge the rule changes was before the election in court.  As the courts have explained, you can't wait until after the election and then challenge the rule changes where you didn't like the results.

Agreed they should have done that earlier but not sure it was legal as it was part of their States Constitution. I agree the GOP strategy was wrong and too little too late. Corona delivered Biden the Presidency but when all's said and done it's over and Trump needs to accept it and accept he's his own worst enemy.

Ms Loeffler spoke in the Senate in the past hour.  She backed off from challenging the Georgia results.  Some applauded when she finished.

Maybe next time a pandemic comes the majority of Republican politicians  will do what they did this time and contend it's nonexistent or no worse than the flu. So no special ballot measures are necessary.

Loeffler has always looked to me like a particularly hard-faced woman.  I guess those are the ones that get to marry billionaires.

I hope that some sanity comes from todays insane scenes at Capital Hill in

Washington DC.  I am going to be watching Americas 3 TV channels to see

how they react to this embarrassing day for so many Americans.  Glad

that the Dems got their 2 new votes.  Maybe Donny did this to ensure

that the Republicans go into the Swamp with him.  555

Already some of the Rep's have recanted and are "changing their minds" which means the political wind has changed, the 45 support is quickly becoming toxic.

Well, it is obvious by now, that every aspect of the horrific Trump experiment has failed. Trump has failed miserably, and by getting involved in the senate races, he insured they would lose. It was close enough that if he had kept his extremely toxic mouth shut, they likely would have won.

I am happy. Now the dems can load up the court. 15 justices! Biden has selected more talent in 30 days, than Trump did in four years, and the little talent he had, either left, or got fired for having some integrity, which was strictly forbidden in that heinous administration. And even now, Trump is continuing in his feeble attempts to start a civil war. The nations capital is seized by his hooligan goons.

It's only good if they prosecute Trump.  If Biden/Garland give him a pass, then they have failed in their duty to protect the Constitution.
