Six suffer partial paralysis after inoculation with Sinovac vaccine

Six people, who were inoculated with the Sinovac vaccine in Thailand’s eastern coastal province of Rayong, developed partial paralysis and had to be given medication to dissolve blood clots, said Dr. Thiravat Hemachudha, head of the Emerging Infectious Disease Health Science Centre of Chulalongkorn University, in his Facebook post yesterday (Tuesday). All those affected have now recovered.

Dr. Thiravat said that the blood clots might have been caused by a specific batch of the vaccine.

Meanwhile, in the northeastern province of Udon Thani, the director of Udon Thani Hospital, Dr. Ruethai Watthanavinit, was recently diagnosed with COVID-19, raising the total number of infected medics to eight, including three doctors, three nurses, a domestic worker and one patient attendant.

Thailand sticks with Sinovac vaccine after cases of 'stroke-like' side effects

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand will continue to use COVID-19 vaccine from China's Sinovac Biotech following six reports of unusual "stroke-like" side effects among recipients, government-appointed experts said on Wednesday.

Six medical personnel in Rayong province, east of Bangkok, who were inoculated earlier this month experienced symptoms similar to those of a stroke, the panel of experts said, including drowsiness and numbness in the limbs.

They have since recovered after being given stroke treatments and no blood clots were found.

The announcement comes amid heightened global focus on efficacy levels and possible side-effects from different COVID-19 vaccines, and temporary suspensions in some countries, including over reports of blood clots among some recipients.

Sinovac did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment.

Thailand has received two million doses of the Chinese company's CoronaVac, which have already been administered to more than 600,000 people nationwide. It has ordered 1.5 million more shots due to arrive soon.

The experts could not say for certain what caused the symptoms, which they believed may be related to the nervous system and were not fatal, said Kulkanya Chokephaibulkit from Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital.

Brain scans from all six women showed normal results which did not suggest a stroke, and no irregularities were found in the vaccine batch from where the six doses originated, Kulkanya said.

Doses from the same batch were distributed to other provinces and more than 300,000 people might have already received the shots, she added.

"The panel agreed we can continue to use this vaccine batch because the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the temporary effects, which can occur," Kulkanya said.

No such effects have previously been reported in Thailand or other countries, she added.

The incidents would not change Thailand's plan to begin mass inoculations from June, said Taweesap Siraprapasiri of the Department of Disease Control.

"The side effects can be monitored and they are not beyond what we can expect," said Taweesap.

What I fear about this sinovac gunk is that if this is true, that's stroke-like side effects in 1/100,000 shots. Now I know that may not sound a lot at present, but Thailand has been rolling this gunk out to medical staff and I'd like to think they would be slightly more fit and healthy than the general populace. When this gets fully starting to roll out, these stroke-like effects are going to explode with the general 'unhealthy' populace

Planning not to take any of these emergency vax during the guinea pig stage.

Will watch how it all unfolds over a reasonable waiting period - say two years - before considering any necessity then.

And risk catching the virus and potentially end up in an ICU ward with a tube jammed down your throat?  Really?  Not to mention the problems you'll have traveling.  If that interests you.

I would suggest that anyone getting vaccinated with Sinovac eat some aspirin first.

Wondering if this is happening with vaccinations in China as well and if so is it being transparently reported appropriately on the world stage

  • Popular Post

Before I get vaccinated I want a cast iron guarantee from the hospital that they will cover any and all expenses arising from a 'sudden mystery illness' occurring within 30 days of the injection.

As a foreigner, it'd be foolish to get injected in Thailand without that guarantee.

The China vaccines are terrible. But to be fair, they did an excellent job manufacturing the virus...

They are only 50.4 % effective which is useless maybe the Thai government got the 2 million vaccines free when they ordered those mega expensive super fast trains !

Yes, many posters here would have us believe our Northern neighbors are known for their honesty...

Apparently the Sinovac 19 vaccine is only 50% effect according to some news reports (and I seem to recall the Chinese surprisingly admitted the same).
Logically wouldn't this mean you would need four shots, not two, in order to get near 100% efficacy?

For sure when you have pay have to pay between 6 and 10k a shot. according to Thaiger news . they have to guarantee its the proper stuff and any adverse affect is down to them

Incredibly depressing to  witness the continued level of ignorance  displayed  by so many who constantly declare superior intelligence !

No vaccine is claimed to  100% prevent infection !

All vaccines  have shown various efficacy in a range  from 50<90+ against the original and predominant strains apart from the South African strain.

All the vaccines have demonstrated a 100% reduction in the severity of symptoms and death otherwise.

Well there's a shock. Very few countries are buying this vaccine, which is largely ineffective, based on independent lab results: https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2021/04/15/in-clinical-and-real-world-trials-chinas-sinovac-underperforms

I wouldn't put that in my arm if it was the only vaccine on the market.

I'm going to have to fly to the USA and risk my life to get a decent vaccine.

It isn't an either/or issue. And it is a carefully calculated risk based on my health condition and lifestyle choices.

I'd say that you, Jeffr2, have a higher risk of ending up in a ICU due to an anxiety attack over your massive Covid fear (demonstrated by your comments in thread after thread on the topic), or from the side effects of the hypertension and other drugs you're taking for stress, than I am from catching Covid. Please chill.

I believe that I have already had a bout of Covid during the first wave and survived that very well without the need even to consult with a doctor.

Not so lucky was my sister who was put into an induced coma and on a ventilator a few months ago and barely survived with ongoing complications. That was from pneumonia, not Covid and this was in the UK. She is one of those people who are overweight, with other high risk medical conditions, who does nothing about that except drop pills and have (in her case) annual flu shots that she thought would prevent what happened to her.

As for travel, I have no plans to travel outside Thailand in the next two years. I would hope that the tyranny of 'Covid passports' won't survive the backlash and will no longer be a condition of travel by then.

Russell Brand has an excellent short video about this. Google 'Covid passports - This is where it leads'.

As I'm over 60 and cannot have Sinovac, and Bioscience will not deliver enough vaccine for Thais as an expat here in Thailand I expect I will be taking my chances for the rest of this year, and possibly next year.
