BANGKOK (NNT) - Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has explained that the government’s vaccination program had not been overly slow, nor unjustly favored one producer over another. He assured that the Covid-19 vaccines Thailand now had were being administered quickly and efficiently, adding that the number of doses will be increased from July and reach 61 million by the end of the year.

He said initially, the purchases Thailand made were based on the situation at that time, when the country was successful in containing the outbreak, and the government did not want to put people’s lives at risk since some of the available vaccines used untried technology.

The prime minister said now those vaccines have been successfully used elsewhere, the government has allowed their manufacturers to make proposals and the government was considering ways to buy from them.

He pointed out that he had also responded to calls, especially from social media users, to allow the private sector to import vaccines from manufacturers other than the two which the government had already bought, AstraZeneca and CoronaVac by Sinovac Biotech. He had set up a panel to consider the private sector’s purchase of vaccines.

Disagree profusely as do many of your citizens. Why do nearly all statements from him start with a denial ?

Quickly and efficiently? Says the man who made Thailand the nearly slowest country in whole Asia. What a shameless liar, what a negligent person.     Wow, how generous of him! Surely

It is the job of govt to prepare for the future not just respond to events as they happen.

Wow, how generous of him! Surely the managers of the vaccine companies all will come to beg him now, and kowtow to him to be allowed to sell their vaccine here. ????

This man is really a hopeless case.

steady on guys the PM and his top team have other important things to think about, like how channel parts of budgets into their pocket without being noticed and keeping the road carnage down over the holidays when the roads are empty

one thing is becoming clear in recent months - the Thai people want to know where their money is going

Oh! I see! This schedule was the plan all along! For the good of the people! Thanks for letting us know!

So if everybody needs 2 injections (unless Thailand get the Johnson vaccine), then they will only have fully vaccinated around half of the population by Christmas.

How will TAT spin those news?

It's because our illustrious leader is always on the defensive.

Is that a reference to an audit trail?

Yet the available ones are paralysing people in Thailand (Sinovac), and giving blood clots to recipients in other countries (AstraZeneca).

The "untried technology" ones (i.e. more modern and more effective ones) have not be associated with the same risks.

It doesn't seem to be so much about safety as about keeping costs down and making sure the right people make the profit.

IIRC didn't our illustrious leader have the Sinovac vaccine? I see he didn't suffer a clot.

"so stuff all you peasants"   .   Now I think that remark just echos exactly what the Elite HISOs and of course the ring master has always thought and said about the good people of this country.

Nah, he was deemed "too old" and got the Az jab later. He is a clot.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

I think he might have, he has been so forgetful of the things he has said and has to tell different stories every day.  Ah yes, this is the remake of The Never Ending Story starring General Prayut.....

Nice to see a fire under that backside. Likely we will get more "explanations"  as it grows.

After successfully saying as little as possible, they were forced to unveil their vaccination plan a couple months back. Then it went through three changes due to mounting criticism. And this is the fourth vaccination plan, or is it fifth? They're coming quick now.

Ah, the real reason for the delays ... torn from today's headlines about blood clots, it's because they care.

-need more coffee-.

Anyone else spot the connection?

Give the private hospitals a free hand. That could help alleviate some of the burden the government has in trying to produce a vaccine.

Don't forget...he is the Defence Minister ????

Me, my mates, me and my mates families, anyone whose loyalty is needed to keep me and my mates in place: police and army bosses, (they have the guns and troops) senior officials in various departments ( they know too much about lots of things), powerful and influential people (we owe them remember); err, that's it really.

Basing a decision on a "situation at the time" would amaze persons experienced in a whole number of fields.
