BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai government will be reaching out to countries upstream of the Mekong river to help address fluctuations in the water level, which affect villagers and fishermen in seven provinces of Thailand.

 

The Thai National Mekong Committee reached a decision in a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, for related agencies to reach out to countries upstream on the Mekong River to address water level variations.

 

The committee has ordered the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to work with China on mutual water management guidelines from the Lancang, the Chinese name for the upper part of Mekong River, to other parts of this international river.

 

ONWR and the Foreign Ministry are tasked with establishing water management cooperation between Thailand and Laos in a timely manner, to address the concerning fluctuations caused by several factors.

 

The National Water Command projects the water level in the Mekong River will fluctuate once again from April to May, as high water volume is expected in the early months of this year’s rainy season.

 

The Thai National Mekong Committee has also ordered the ONWR to follow up on efforts to mitigate the effects of water fluctuations on riverside villagers in Thai provinces, and to submit their mitigation proposal to the National Water Resources Committee for approval.

Mutual guidelines? Give me a laugh! Xi orders, and his vassal states in the South have to follow. This is the only mutual agreement they made, this is the spirit of the time in Southeast Asia nowadays.

The Chinese masters are calling the shots here, something they want didn't happen so they turned it off.

 

I wonder what it was.....

 

Or perhaps there's a new 'request' coming. I'm sure the orders will filter their way down from the CCP eventually.

Laos is damming the mekong and its tributaries at an amazing pace. Laos recently built 50 dams (YES 50!!!) and now have another 50 under construction. Laos now even has the gall to build a massive multi billion dollar dam just 2km upstream of Thailand. That mega dam will have complete control over what water Thailand gets. There's your fluctuations.

No problem as I expect any day now those in government will announce a canal being built from the north of Thailand to the East totally bypassing these new dams and relieving the issue.  Of course SCG will be the new contractor.

And yet Thailand continues to buy the electricity that makes several of these Laotian dams economically feasible in the first place.

Spocked ears?  Nah, more like wearing specs way too small for his head.

to be fair, who could have ever expected china to use these dams to restrict the flow of the river to downstream countries who depend on it.

The Chinese (and Laos) government is(are) going to do what they want with the Mekong River that's best for their country(s) and Thailand (and Cambodia) be damned. (I wonder how much Vietnam is affected)

A Very Sad Situation for the Mekong ????

Probably the 2nd most important river on the planet !

Why even acknowledge the Chinese name for the Mekong river. Just like all the reefs and I would also love the name South China Sea be changed to the South East Asian Sea. They just don't care and do not play fair and the world needs to turn united on the Chinese government to put them back in their place. We all need to be humble. Until then, nothing will change and the countries down stream not controlled entirely by china will suffer hard for having no Mekong river water... .

Laos isn't the only country building dams you know. The Mekong River Commission was founded in 1957 to exploit and dam up the mekong.  It includes Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, but has NEVER included China. Ironically the US, which feared that poverty in the basin would contribute to the strength of communist movements—used to be one of the most vocal international backers of the committee. Sad, but true.

The CCP will say what they always do. The spokesperson will repeat that the PRC always respects all international laws and norms. Next comes: water management in the PRC is a matter for the PRC, and no foreign government or organisation has the right to interfere in the internal affairs of the PRC.   I can hear it already......

Yeah. Have to be suspicious when they become vocally concerned. Guarantee that such a notion has something to do with underhanded financial prospering in one form or another. Certainly wouldn't have anything to do with the welfare and well being of the people, the river or the greater region. They have a history of showing their hand too soon.....
