Vaccination delay threatens another downward spiral for Thai economy

The combination of a new wave of COVID-19 and delayed vaccination is set to wreak more damage on Thailand’s economy, with people’s incomes falling further and business risks rising.

Slow vaccination progress coupled with a surge of infections has prompted Kasikorn Research Centre to lower its growth projection for the Thai economy this year from 2.6 percent to 1.8 percent.

Since April 14, Thailand’s COVID-19 caseload has risen by more than 1,000 infections per day, indicating the latest wave is spreading faster than outbreaks early last year and in December.

Meanwhile, only 0.82 percent of the population of 69 million had been vaccinated as of April 19, according to Oxford University’s “Our World in Data Report”.

Incredible thailand,

Yet the autocracy still think it is not a problem.

I and many of you feel very sorry for the Thai people who are suffering so much from this. And its only going to get worse as they are now likely to lose another tourist season at the end of this year.

Such an incompetent failure to address the situation.

'thank' the incompetent thai government

All this was foretold. The inter-provincial travel controls and vaccine rollouts (or lack of it) are a slow moving train wreck.

However, just ask the Government officials where they are getting their money from since this whole pandemic unfolded, and they will say off of the backs of the less fortunate Thai people.  They will say the money has come from a economy they have strengthened.  The country is stable they will say, and we ar the hub of the universe.  The vaccine we are making will bring in money to all Thai's, as it is a vaccine of the Thai peoples favorites, Chilis, Pla Ra, and palm sugar.

This UK variant has proved itself to be highly contagious and a big killer.

It is going to get much, much worse, here in Thailand and around the world. The last few days have recorded the highest number of cases in Thailand and throughout the world.

You would seriously think these clowns ???? only got the memo last week, they have had over a year to prepare.

Everyone knew this time last year that as soon a a vaccine was available the whole population would need to be done, but no, the buffoons wanted to wait until their special facility was up & running and they could earn squillions in the process, nasty nasty greedy people who only deserve jail time for their greed & buffoonery.

It is called Malfeasance and it is what they used to take down the last truly elected government.

It's hard to even imagine a good excuse for the incredible slowness of the Thai vaccine program. The information about how vital this was going to be has been known for a very long time. It may have been rocket science to develop the multiple vaccines but it was elementary to know that Thailand was going to need boatloads of them asap. Now Thailand is back of the pack. Thailand was never going to be quickest with vaccines, but among the slowest? This is just so horrible.

Even after vaccination the situation will not change.

Do not trust it.

They are not a panacea.

It's a fight against time with new variations such as in India and Brazil.

Boosters will be needed.

People will still need to take mitigation measures and most probably won't.

But mass vaccinations are definitely a move in the right direction.

It seems a list of all the advertising and PR messages you read on self-called professional journalists and Experts.

It would be better not to make fun of yourself with useless excuses, everything that you accept forms a precedent. After that, any excuse will be good for implementing emergency policies.

Totalitarianism should not be joked.

Blah blah blah. Another plandemic conspiracy theory believer.

It is difficult to avoid becoming cynical as to events.

As a country Thailand has achieved a relatively low International debt.

Internally it has some of the wealthiest elite by International ratings.

It has recently had decades of impressive development in terms of infrastructure and industrial output.

On the back of that it has created a staggering level of internal social debt.

A downturn will impact on those who are liable for the debt.

That implies a vulnerable and easily manipulated workforce perhaps?

Making Thailand more competitive again relative to upcoming other  S.E.A nations?

I wish I was the spin doctor who coined the "conspiracy theory" label. Now I would stay in a yacht around the Dominican Republic enjoying the rum and the breeze.

Sorry, I don't think by labels, that's stupid. We can't throw everything we don't like into the cauldron of labels.

It isn't as contagious as the UK variant. It has been around since October, a similar time as the UK variant.

It has been in the UK since February and only 103 so far there have been found.

The UK variant is in Thailand and it looks like we are f..... already.

I think it is time to stock up and stay home.

The Thai government made a bet and they lost. Its a shame really because they got so close.

They bet that they could keep the country safe with taught restrictions, until such time that western countries were mostly vaccinated , at which time they could buy the vaccine cheap. I guess they did not count on more infectious variants.

People apparantly feel safer if government tells them what to do.

How much you are willing to pay me to tell you what you have to do?

We should bet something. Do you have a partner?

Sorry I haven't done a lot of reading on the Indian variant, I was under the impression that it was a double mutation hence the problem there, so it's a case of too many patients and not enough hospitals/ Doctors, nurses etc.

Not a bet. A decision to have one company make the vaccine and get the majority of the pot of gold. Everything else and everyone else is collateral damage.

That's only because the Indian government went ahead and let them travel and congregate in large numbers for religious holidays and visit temples. Thailand would never do anything like that.

Oh, wait, sorry, they just did.

One thing good about this is that the Thai baht has gone down a little but not much.
