Pfizer vaccine to be administered to medical workers

BANGKOK (NNT) - Adviser to the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), Clin. Prof. Dr. Udom Kachintorn, says medical workers who have received two Sinovac doses, will receive a third vaccine shot, also known as a booster, due to the spread of the Delta variant in many areas.

Clin. Prof. Dr. Udom said that the Delta variant, which was first detected in India, is spreading in 96 countries. Two months ago, 85 to 90 percent of COVID-19 infections in Thailand were the Alpha variant, which was first discovered in the United Kingdom (UK). In June and July, 30 percent of the infections in Thailand are the Delta variant. Its transmission rate is very high. Fifty percent of the infections are the Delta variant in greater Bangkok.

The Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines are 92 to 96 percent effective in preventing serious illness. There is little information on the Sinovac vaccine, but it is still 90 percent effective in preventing serious illness and death.

Researchers at Oxford University indicated that a person’s immune response will decrease by 50 percent three to four months after receiving the vaccine. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) has yet to provide an official guidance on receiving a third dose.

After receiving the first and second doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, the period to receive a booster shot is three months. However, the physician recommended people not to quickly book their third dose because they may receive an old version of the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccine. A newer version may have less serious side effects.

Thailand is now considering which vaccine is the best option, between AstraZeneca, which is a viral vector vaccine, or an mRNA vaccine. The result should be known in a month.

The booster shot will be first given to some 700,000 medical personnel, followed by the elderly and people with any of seven chronic diseases. If the Pfizer vaccine is not yet available, the AstraZeneca vaccine will be administered to medical personnel.

If the Pfizer vaccine is available, 1.5 million of its doses donated by the United States will be given to medical personnel.

After the general public signed up to receive 20 million Pfizer doses and 5 million Johnson & Johnson doses, with the Moderna vaccine to be delivered to the private sector in the fourth quarter of 2021, people should not look down on the Sinovac vaccine, since it is also effective in preventing serious illness and death, similar to the AstraZeneca vaccine. The WHO has not recommended people to be administered with different vaccine types, as it would be difficult to distinguish the vaccines if there are negative outcomes.

Clin. Prof. Dr. Udom insisted that the coronavirus will continually mutate, and vaccines are being developed to counter different variants. A vaccine committee has made considerations for ordering more vaccines, and it is not being inactive. There will be a press briefing after each meeting from now on. The next meeting will take place on July 9th at Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok.

The Pfizer vaccine has been selected as an mRNA vaccine to be given to the general public for free. The vaccine will arrive in the fourth quarter of this year.

Guess that leaked memo of the MOPH meeting minutes kind of forced someone's hand, or was it planned?

so if not pfizer, they will get AZ.

And pfizer 1.5mln doses are donated from the USA. From which 300k must be put aside for foreigners (probably the US citizens, residents). That would be the end of year.

So the whole article is misinformation, trying to build up medics morale and cover up leaked document from April, which decided not to give medics any more vax

So much for the previous news report that said it was conditional that 300,000 doses had to go to farangs.....as I have always said, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing, just leave Moderna alone, I have already paid for it.

If this came to fruition, it would be great. Govt threw medical personnel by injecting them with Sinovac. Need to take care of these folks

I hope that's true, and I also hope that those frontline medical workers will get their much needed booster shots before the useless generals that are responsible for this mess.

I cannot help thinking of the story of the three little pigs for some reason. Spent time and effort and money twice before realising the other option was better

Still thinking, like a woman shopping for shoes.

These vaccines, 1.5 MM Pfizer from the U.S. could arrive in the next few days.

At this rate, Thai medicos will probably need every vaccine. Why stop with #3?

So continuing to administer Sinovac, in the face of the Delta variant, will continue? Really?

Pfizer vaccine to be administered to medical workers - nearer the end of the year if we can get it.

Just hang on for another 4-5 months and everything will be fine.

Not exactly the greatest showing of urgency.

I think the/a plan is to use the U.S Pfizer 1.5 MM donation, due in a matter of days - no Thai red-tape/brown envelopes - for medicos.

Whether this plan is utilized remains to be seen.

50 deaths a day = 1500 so no hurry - it's only the plebs who are dying.

Modifier...draft agreement, so close. Time to rope in the AG?

The cabinet has also approved a draft agreement between Thailand and the US on the latter's offer to supply Thailand with an additional amount of Pfizer shots, he said.

I thought 20% of the Pfizer was to go to foreigners.  Well, that only lasted a day before that fell by the wayside.

If USA can airlift the 1.5 million Pfizer shots from stock, very soon—-then why does the CCSA cling to this 4th quarter to the end of the year nonsense?

Information regarding the Sinovac vaccine

https://www.who.int/news-room/feature-stories/detail/the-sinovac-covid-19-vaccine-what-you-need-to-know

How efficacious is the vaccine?

A large phase 3 trial in Brazil showed that two doses, administered at an interval of 14 days, had an efficacy of 51% against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection, 100% against severe COVID-19, and 100% against hospitalization starting 14 days after receiving the second dose.

That was a trial-balloon leak from a CCSA general. I think the terms are still being negotiated. It's a bad look if Americans/"foreigners" get a good vaccine, so that needs to be balanced with getting a good vaccine into Thais. Maybe they'll take 1 MM without the "foreigner" rider?

You're confusing two separate Pfizer "allotments": 1.5 MM donation, maybe arriving sooner rather than later, and 20 MM order, maybe arriving Q4/Q1.

And that could all be Burmese, Lao, and Cambodian laborers.

Because that's probably when Americans will get it... after some queue jumpers.

I thought it was logistically and legally impossible for the US to ship, store, and distribute vaccines to Thailand. At least that is what a lot of people on TVF said when whining about why the US embassy cannot vaccinate American citizens.

What happened to 20pc to USA expats? That didn't last long! Unless there are 300k USA medics in Thailand?

For what it's worth, that wasn't what was said. Rather it was 20% for foreigners.

Correct—and if that 20% goes to foreign doctors and medical workers in Thailand (who may already have SinoVac shots)—that qualifies, unfortunately.  The Devil’s in the details…

And, of course, there's a good chance it isn't even true. Certainly no confirming states have come from the US to corroborate the claim.

Smell that?  That's the smell of money baby.
Covid vaccines alone will be a trillion dollar a year industry once government's mandate 3 to 6 month boosters in the name of public safety.  Nothing to see here, move along.

And Covid will never, ever be allowed to go away.  Variants ad-infinitum with unending government, corporate, and media campaigns to keep the horror alive in the frightened public's mind.
"We will save you.  Open your pocket books and report for your shots!"
So much for the vaccine induced 'herd-immunity' canard.
