It’s inevitable that infected tourists will slip through the net. That’s the nature of the virus and why there are so many cases in the world. Even vaccinated tourists with pre-departure tests can still carry it abroad.

There will never be zero covid cases. Thailand needs to accept that and figure out how to open the country again.

but what, if he got infected already on Phuket?

as to sinovac in the next post - this vax is not used in the west, so he had some other vax.

Maybe he had received 2 shots of the Sinovac vaccine which as we all know is useless .

According to CNBC, "The UAE’s vaccination campaign, one of the fastest in the world, has relied heavily on the Sinopharm shot." However, there have been concerns over its efficacy and talk of people requiring a third, booster dose.

The UAE and Bahrain offer third Sinopharm shots amid questions over vaccine effectiveness

Read the article...he was tested on arrival at the airport. Unlikely to get it there.

This sandbox is not going to last very long. One needs to look at Portugal and Spain where the UK virus spreaders were allowed to go.

The UAE is not considered to be "in the west," it's in the Middle East..

o, I didn't know from where he was. I didn't read, he was detected in the airport. In that case it's not issue at all - he will be quarantened (sp) and send back

But UEA has probably all vax available in the world, and fully approved (not just experimental use). So there is less than 20% chance that he got sinovac.

They are already doing the 3rd jab for all those, who had previously only sinovac, with yet different vax.

This is my unofficial tracking, from a couple of different web pages:

* https://www.facebook.com/83ssj/?__tn__=-UC*F

Note also, for many weeks now, anyone coming into Phuket, had to have proof of COVID testing for a short time prior to entry (or proof of full Sinovac vaccination or single AstraZeneca jab).  For a short time (not any more) people who did not meet the above were actually tested upon arrival at the bridge (or airport).  So Phuket has limited its exposure - although clearly not enough.  Almost all of the new cases (?) to Phuket come from people who were either outside of Phuket, or who were in contact with someone who recently arrived into Phuket.

The relatively low numbers of people in Phuket hospitals (compared to the rest of Thailand) confirms these numbers to be approximately representative.

This morning, I received a report marking two new cases of infection. One was a Thai person, and the other person is not what we want because he was a tourist under the Phuket Sandbox scheme,” Dr Kusak said.

Good start to the sandpit.

It's possible but unlikely to be Phuket as symptoms take a few days to appear, so more likely picked it up in his home country just before or after taking the test.
