PHUKET: Phuket Provincial Public Health Office (PPHO) Chief Dr Kusak Kukiattikoon has confirmed that Phuket has marked its first Phuket Sandbox tourist infected with COVID-19.

Dr Kusak broke the news during a live broadcast this morning (July 7).

“This morning, I received a report marking two new cases of infection. One was a Thai person, and the other person is not what we want because he was a tourist under the Phuket Sandbox scheme,” Dr Kusak said.

There will never be zero covid cases. Thailand needs to accept that and figure out how to open the country again.

Agreed. Thailand is so heavily reliant on tourism that they really need to just sort out their chaotic and pathetic vaccine rollout and purchase and open this year to the planet without daft restrictions to save themselves.

Every year hundreds of thousands die of the flu. We live with it. We have to do the same with covid, or just give up.

Now what?

It's not just a case of Phuket here, what happens when this happens in multiple locations with a largely unvaccinated population?

Assuming this is a real tourist, what about a holiday refund? Will his insurance cover this? Will anybody's? If you go to a country with high infection rates and your holiday is ruined by Covid, is that self-inflicted harm?

I can't see insurance companies paying out for Covid infections due to deliberate exposure in such cases, when it could have been avoided by not travelling to a high risk country.

They need to just forget about torists and focus on decent vaccines. That's the only way out.

but what, if he got infected already on Phuket?

as to sinovac in the next post - this vax is not used in the west, so he had some other vax.

Identified now isolated and treated of necessary.

I always wonder about the never reported, is he even feeling ill, sniffles?

According to CNBC, "The UAE’s vaccination campaign, one of the fastest in the world, has relied heavily on the Sinopharm shot." However, there have been concerns over its efficacy and talk of people requiring a third, booster dose.

A double vaccinated tourist is now infected with COVID - that's the important part in thie story.

Whoever it is has already received two shots of one of the vaccines on the list.

I noticed that they don't leave much time after the second shot but it will be interesting to see if the second shot was received at least 6 weeks prior to the infection, because then it will be what they call a 'breakthrough case'.

Important to find out which strain of COVID this person has acquired as well as the vaccine used.

Is Phuket free of Covid ?

Is the population on Phuket vaccinated with chinese wax which do not give high protection against covid ?

Is it possible the tourist get covid on Phuket ?

The UAE is not considered to be "in the west," it's in the Middle East..

All vaccines have breakthrough cases.  In UK there are probably thousands and thousands cases of fully vaccinated people.

And all vaccines so far are pretty good in preventing severe covid.

Read the article...he was tested on arrival at the airport. Unlikely to get it there.

This sandbox is not going to last very long. One needs to look at Portugal and Spain where the UK virus spreaders were allowed to go.

o, I didn't know from where he was. I didn't read, he was detected in the airport. In that case it's not issue at all - he will be quarantened (sp) and send back

But UEA has probably all vax available in the world, and fully approved (not just experimental use). So there is less than 20% chance that he got sinovac.

They are already doing the 3rd jab for all those, who had previously only sinovac, with yet different vax.

Mostly among the younger unvaccinated population.

Mt niece (about 20 years old) got Covid a few months ago, no big deal, someone came into the office and gave it to everyone - a week off work then back to normal.

She wasn't sent to a COVID prison though - that's the difference.

This is my unofficial tracking, from a couple of different web pages:

* https://www.facebook.com/83ssj/?__tn__=-UC*F

Note also, for many weeks now, anyone coming into Phuket, had to have proof of COVID testing for a short time prior to entry (or proof of full Sinovac vaccination or single AstraZeneca jab).  For a short time (not any more) people who did not meet the above were actually tested upon arrival at the bridge (or airport).  So Phuket has limited its exposure - although clearly not enough.  Almost all of the new cases (?) to Phuket come from people who were either outside of Phuket, or who were in contact with someone who recently arrived into Phuket.

The relatively low numbers of people in Phuket hospitals (compared to the rest of Thailand) confirms these numbers to be approximately representative.

It's possible but unlikely to be Phuket as symptoms take a few days to appear, so more likely picked it up in his home country just before or after taking the test.
