What's going on with the SCB?

Someone said they were closing branches due to Covid, have tried their Call Center as well as my local branch, no answers on either. Surely the Call Center would have a recorded message giving any info. re closures?

They closed many about a year ago.  Are you talking that closure or a new round of closures?  Would not expect information from last year to be on a recorded message today.

Note in Pattaya section - sorry was talking all but would not expect local closures to be on a national call line even if current.

Why not visit your local SCB and see of they're open? Plus there's so many around town, if your local favorite is closed drive 5 minutes and visit one of the bigger branches.

Just it the nail on the head..... too many branches previously.

One issue with branches of SCB closing is that if the particular branch that you originally opened your account at closes then you will be registered at another branch and given a brand new account number effectively wiping clear all previous the transactions.

I know this for a fact because it happened to me a couple of years ago, right in the middle of my under consideration period with immigration!

I'd effectively applied for a marriage extension with an account that no longer existed!

This required quite a bit of sorting out...

My experience is quite the opposite when my SCB branch closed, also a couple of years ago ... my account was transferred to a different branch but my original account number and original bank book remained the same (also confirmed by postage mail from SCB) and hence no issues with immigration during the subsequent extension application.

This was in Bangkok.

According to an article posted 20 minutes ago in the Thailand News section, state run banks in the "dark red" provinces are suspending their services.

Maybe SCB are doing the same ? (I don't see anything on their website or in other news suggesting that though.)

The state run banks include;
the Government Savings Bank,
the Government Housing Bank,
the Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives,
the Export-Import Bank of Thailand,
the Islamic Bank of Thailand,
the SME Development Bank, and
the Thai Credit Guarantee Corporation (TCG).

Managed to contact my branch, it is open. Doesn't explain why the Call Center number doesn't work though.

I am quite confused that again the wrong news "banks closed" (unconditionally) comes up here.

There was a thread yesterday where I picked the news:

Quote

Branch offices of state-owned banks, which are located in malls or department stores in the 13 “Dark Red” provinces, including Bangkok, will suspend their services, starting tomorrow (Tuesday July 20th) until further notice, according to an announcement by the Government Financial Institutions Association (GFA).

https://www.thaipbsworld.com/state-run-banks-to-suspend-services-at-branches-in-13-dark-red-provinces/

There is NO GENERAL CLOSURE OF BANKS.

We are not at war.

Main branches are open with limited hours.

Best you go through the thread from yesterday:

The SCB branch in my town closed last year.  My accounts were transferred to another branch.  But they are still the same account numbers and books used.

This was in Bangkok.

Same thing happened with me with Kasikorn when they closed the branch opposite Pantip Plaza. That was several years ago though.

a bit of unusual: part of any account no. with any TH bank always connects with ONE branch only = acc. nos. cannot travel unchanged from branch to branch

I hate to tell you this, but that embarrassing rubbish at the foot of your posts - if you don't want to delete it, you should at least correct it. It should read "St Hilda's College, Oxford University".

Thanks. I take your point about the establishment. But it's what a student there told me when I was invited to the college for lunch, as she was suffering a hangover after attending a party the night before. If you can't see the funny side in what she said, blaming the contents of the bottle rather than that she had drunk too much from it, and only see it as rubbish, why should I care?

You're welcome. I'm glad you fixed it - if only for your own reputation, especially if you know people there.

Was in Big C on Sukhumvit earlier and SCB was closed.

The only thing open on the ground floor was Boots.

A friend tried to pay his elec bill at 7-11 this morning on the darkside. The first three 7-11s he went to were closed. When he eventually found an open one, he asked why the others were closed and was told it was because the staff have covid.????

I think the situation is far worse than we are being told - time to batten down the hatches!

There's always the chance something was lost in translation. I live on the darkside and last week I wanted to take my cat to the nearby vet for grooming but they were closed, so I went to it's sister shop just down the road and the English fluent doctor was the only one working, he told me all of his staff was off to get the covid vaccine and will reopen the next day. Ask your friend to visit the same 7-11s tomorrow and I'll bet they are back open with the regular newly vaccinated staff.
