Ferrari Jo case: Squabbles among money hungry bent cops after pandemic cut traditional bribery streams, says Chuvit

It was only a matter of time before one of Thailand's most outspoken characters commented on the case of "Ferrari Jo" or ex cop Thitisan Uthanaphon who now faces a murder charge in the death of a drug suspect in custody in Muang district police station in Nakhon Sawan. 

 

Former politician, nightclub owner and TV celebrity and presenter Chuvit Kamolvisit let rip with a no holds barred attack on Royal Thai Police corruption on Facebook "live".

 

He said that he had sympathy for the underlings in the case who also find themselves charged with murder for he believes that they have been caught up in squabbles at the police station over who gets what slice of the "tea money" pie.

 

The video that was apparently leaked was all about the struggle for bribes and money.

 

He called a place like Nakhon Sawan a "Golden District" for bribes but the cops there had had to go without their usual revenue streams from prostitution (he called it 'entertainment', a standard Thai euphemism, notes ASEAN NOW) and gambling.

 

These had been obliterated by the pandemic closures and crackdowns meaning fights over money among the police. In addition those higher up the corruption food chain needed feeding too.

 

He said that the plastic bag over the head routine was clearly still going on to extort money even in a major police station in the heart of a city like Muang district Nakhon Sawan. 

 

If no one had seen the video then the police would have got away with "yes he died from drugs or a heart attack".

 

The truth was this was murder and extortion. 

 

ASEAN NOW notes that both chief Jo and all the officers involved have not denied the incident took place but have denied it involved extortion. Jo said he was trying to get information about drugs and was acting in the public interest to protect children from the drug menace.

 

Chuvit continued saying that some police enter the force with altruism and ideals but it is soon all about the money, reported Naew Na. 

 

He said that Thitisan would have just continued making more cash if this hadn't come to light. He described him as a person who looks the part, knows how to behave around his superiors and among the celebrity set.

 

Only now is his great wealth and past catching up with him with more investigation as questions are asked about where else there is wrong doing in his activities.

 

Chuvit was in no doubt - this kind of thing continues to go on and has happened many, many times before.

He has been outspoken on police corruption for the last 20 years since he gave up his life as a major massage parlour tycoon. He created a no nonsense graft busting persona for himself and fearless whistleblower exposing police corruption like the gambling dens which were protected by the police. Did resulted in few senior Bangkok police officers transferred to inactive posts and that’s about it. No police reform and corruption still rampant. Police corruption is deeply rooted in Thailand and will be for the unseeable future unfortunately.

The top Police were all on his payroll at one time or another and they have tried to assassinate him before, and targeted his businesses. Remember the grenade attack on Chuvit's hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 24?

Yes, this aspect of the case is very illuminating. It grants a huge incentive to make a bit on the side. In "Jo's" case maybe up to THB300m. This bounty hunter scheme is an obscenity. Anyway, it's the way it is here, and ever more shall be. Exposure of the case is shocking and sickening, even when we know this is how things roll in Thailand. But Jo is just the tip of the iceberg, and without the CCTV footage he would still be fully operational. Without him, the "system" is still fully operational. The next in line for this post is champing at the bit.

I doubt he will be let off lightly, perhaps he could keep his money as that is what they are saying the rest of his money is legal. (hard to believe). But I doubt he will escape punishment for torture leading to death.

When ( if ) Thailand opens up to tourists a problem may emerge as police attempt to make up for lost "income" during corona lockdowns.

IMO it might be worth waiting a while for things to settle down before holidaying there again.
