One of the team who found the 12 young footballers tells of restaging the mission for a film

Rebecca Ratcliffe in Bangkok

In October 2020, Rick Stanton readied his wetsuit, dive harness, cylinders and regulators. He was preparing to plunge into the underwater filming stage at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire: a six-metre deep tank, surrounded by dark walls prepared with an artificial cave passage.

Stanton, along with six other British divers, was recreating the extraordinary Tham Luang cave rescue mission in which he took part, an operation that gripped the world’s attention in 2018, and which saved 12 teenage footballers and their assistant coach who had become trapped in the north Thailand cave.

The result is The Rescue, a documentary film, which was released in the US on 8 October and opens in the UK on 29 October. It promises to re-tell the story of the rescue in nailbiting detail. “We say that in Thailand we made it possibly look a bit too easy,” said Stanton. “Every day we went in and brought the boys out. But no one knew what actually happened, so we did want to tell our story.”

Netflix is filming another Tham Luang cave rescue film right now in the Chiang Rai area.

Many locals are employed here as extras for the shooting.

I wonder in the end if the boys will survive in this film too...?

The CAVE, Final fantasy with Elon Musk’s submarine. ????

I'm a lifelong keen diver, but the story just feels a little milked to death in documentaries and movies without yet another.

Looks more like a dry suit but hey, maybe the photo is not correct.

You meant the nuclear submarine design data, hidden in a peanut butter sandwich?

Oh Gawd , I had forgotten all about him.

At the end of the day it was a brilliant (and dangerous) rescue.

Full credit to everyone involved.

The British divers - and other Nationalities.

The local population who were there every day supporting the rescue teams.

Farmers who had their fields flooded when they pumped out the water.

The Thai Navy personal.

The then governor who went against 'orders from on high' to tell the truth and support the real events. (He subsequently lost his job.)

Yes, it has all been mentioned before. That does not make it any less amazing.

RIP Saman.

The article says he wore a wetsuit during the rescue in October 2020. There's nothing implying that is a picture of him from then.

Probably the most oversaturated, boring news story of the last 6 months.

And they dined out on this ripping adventure for many years.

royalties from interviews, books, audio books, movies, tv series all welcome. Fees from speeches, PowerPoint presentations, slide shows..milk it baby, milk it. You'll never need to work another day.

Two feature films, three books, and now this documentary. You could sink the Bismarck and get less recognition.

It's almost certain that the hero will be an American teenager, played by an actor who is really about 35.

Forget all the ongoing nonsense, just bear in mind it was an enormous and successful endeavour thanks to many people's efforts, daring and life threatening risks.

You've left off the amazing attitude of the rescued boys and their families. In the West they would have been claiming their lives were ruined and lawsuits would have been flying. In this case they seemed to have preferred to express their gratitude and  shown great dignity.
