No surprise with that decision, they have no intention of protecting the planet, there's to much money involved....

Yep, its all about money.

Governments are only in on the green initiatives when it suits those in power and because of the jobs creation and the money and taxes it will generate.

Sure, but if Indonesia and Russia, two of the most corrupt countries on the planet, can sign it then you'd think Thailand would have felt very much at home with this agreement, lol.

The green activist groups need to start a social media campaign advising people that Thailand has refused to sign the pact and will continue exploiting its endangered forests, and asking them to consider again if they really want to go to such a selfish place for their holidays. Add the 2065 net zero target for a country that has a highet average GDP per head than mighty China, and the place should be looking quite unattractive to environmentally concerned people.

You seem to be saying that other countries signed without intending to hold up their agreement. Then you say Thailand should be punished for not doing the same.

So basically it is the appearance of bowing to activists that is the most important thing, not what they can do or are willing to do.

Thailand is not really known in the world for the forests and trees.

What do people think of when they hear the word Thailand?

Yes, temples and food.

Don't you mean "how much money is involved" and how they can get their hands on it- just like vaccines

Shame on you!!!

Loei was once the most beautiful province in Thailand, many different species of wildlife, the difference between when I came 23 years ago and now, is so sad

Isn't burning trees accepted as renewable energy by the greens.

What this space - Army hands out mining leases on army controlled land in return for royalties.

Yes, burning 'woodchips' was regarded as environmentally benevolent once.. asked where these came from, it was not deforestation, so must have been old garden fences... painted of course. The BS gets piled so high.....

That says all ...

Where we live , the locals just go to the national forests and cut the big trees to sell the wood . No police or whatever to stop them ... but who needs big and old trees ? Oh , wait ...

Because, they have no other means, poverty dictates behavior ,and those people will be blamed for deforestation, not the rose wood guitars and hardwood floors of the elite.

Waste of time signing that agreement he knows by 2030 all the forests will be gone

Could well be. I lived among the mountains of Lanna for 13 years and the rate of deforestation was rapid. Thickly wooded mountain slopes became massive fields for the cultivation of maize/sweet corn. Photo below taken in Tak Province:-

Disgraceful and selfish  of him and Thailand ☹️
never listen never learn, typical Thai behaviour ????

it’s all about their own interests and what they can get out of you and the remaining nature without giving anything to anything or anyone ????

I don't know why Thailand didn't sign.  It's not like they would ever follow it.

And when caught - it would all be a "Misunderstanding"

Squeeze the country for every last dollar, then turn it upside down for a shake to make sure they got it all! Shameful & pathetic, squandering the future for our children.

Thailand has very few natural aged forests to protect anyway. Most are 2nd or3rd growth.

Bit surprising Indonesia signed, hope for the orangatangs after all

"royalties"??  I don't think that the Crown Property Bureau owns much forestry....

COP26 --Indonesia signals about-face on COP26 deforestation pledge

JAKARTA, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Indonesia's environment minister has dismissed as "inappropriate and unfair" a global plan to end deforestation by 2030, days after her country, home to a third of the world's rainforests, joined 127 other nations in making the deforestation pledge.

Her comments so soon after the pledge underline the challenges ahead over global deforestation goals, with just three countries - Indonesia, Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo - collectively accounting for 85% of the world's forests.

Adding to confusion over Indonesia's position, the country's vice foreign minister, Mahendra Siregar, on Thursday denied that zero deforestation by 2030 was even part of the COP26 pledge.

Was there any point in this bloke flying to Glasgow in his private jet ? I find it hard to believe that any of the other leaders would take him seriously.

why not - they take bonkin' Boris seriously !

disgraceful!

Traditionally the military has made a lot of money out of logging.

Their promises to replant are just examples of how little they understand about a first eco-system.

it's hard to understand how a country that relies so much on its natural resources to attract tourism is prepared to destroy them willy-nilly.

He didn't sign because there are no longer any forests to protect and the few national park they are unwilling to control or officials pilfer themselves.

Just this week a number of rosewood trees stolen from of all places a government agricultural center. Story here on TV.

Perhaps that is far more sincere behavior, than if he did sign it. We know how many treaties Thailand has broken. And Cha Cha is not exactly known for his follow up game. Not that he will even be in Thailand when this is all over. He will likely end up in exile, or we can hope and pray for a miracle, and see him land in prison. He richly deserves that.

Or even worse. Let me dream, please.

Prayuth - commit to deforestation?  He can't even stop farmers burning their waste!

In 2009, I was teaching summer school and had to create my own  curriculum. I decided to teach about elephants, a much beloved creature and dear to the Thais. I discovered that 90% of the wild elephants were gone due to deforestation.
