First local transmission of Omicron detected in Thailand, 63 cases confirmed so far

Thailand has confirmed a total of 63 Omicron cases to date, with more cases awaiting confirmation, according to Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Most of the confirmed and initially detected cases are arrivals from abroad, but a local transmission, Thailand’s first, has also been detected, in a Thai woman who did not travel outside the country, but whose husband recently returned from Nigeria.

Anutin also revealed that travel measures may be readjusted. Based on initial discussions, all arrivals may have to go through quarantine again, with the cancellation of the Test & Go scheme. The “sandbox” scheme will remain in place. Such measures will have to be proposed to the CCSA first.

The Public Health Ministry (MoPH) also asked provincial health offices to report their COVID-19 situation, particularly regarding Omicron cases, as well as other measures to be imposed during the New Year holidays, with possible adjustments to the measures or cancellations.

To be fair, even in places like the UK they do not know the full extent of Omicron. But at least they do test people there.

It's impossible for them ( or any other country ) to know the correct figures.

The covid 19 omicron is fast to spread unlike the freedom of information in Thailand .

Seems this news has been suppressed .

Even if they close the whole country down , it will still spread here .

No way to keep it out .

Vaccinations against Delta have little effect on Omicron .

This is Thailand, I would not be surprised, if the downward trend continues.

When Delta did the rounds it started in labor camps and a few fresh markets. It didn't take long before Bangkok had 100+ clusters.

Then cases exploded among the prison population.

We are probably in for a replay.

There’s not enough testing occurring to get to the truth…..!

Many people will not be reporting if they have Omicron as they may never know that they had it. Without requiring hospital treatment who would???

My Nurse Practitioner daughter in the US, says what they are seeing with Omicron, is muscle soreness, fatigue, nasal congestion and upper respiratory issues.  She classifies it right now as nothing more than a heavy chest cold, and after all it is winter when folks would generally get it in the past.  Seems that the antivaxxers are getting it worse than those vaccinated.  She said with the use of monoclonal antibodies they are back to normal in a few days, those unvaccinated well only time will tell.

Every net has holes.

Any government that tries to put their finger in the hole is faced with a barrage of whinging from one direction or another.

Unlikely that particular case would have come about if they hadn't abandoned the 14 day quarantine at the end of Sept, omicron just waited in the wings.

Give it two more weeks and the hospitals will be overflowing

It was always going to arrive, despite Anutin's asinine chest thumping about it being no match for Thailand.

Now, Thailand will have to decide how it reacts. Does it panic, lock down and destroy what is left of the economy, ruining people's businesses, livelihoods, mental health and education? Or does it ramp up the vaccination/booster program and allow it's citizens to decide what level of risk they deem is appropriate for them?

Once they arrested the bad bad Omicron, I might suggest to put them in charge of the police force and go after the Red Bull grandson. If you can nail the first locally transmitted little nasty virus .......

Your knowledge astounds me.

Don't worry about it.  You get a sniffle and a sore throat.  IT doubles every 3 days.  The whole population will be exposed to it.  Good thing it's relatively benign.  You aren't stopping this kind of transmissibility.

My Thai partner queued for 90 minutes at Pattaya Festival yesterday for her booster only to be told that she was 3 days early in the 3 months time between shots, told her to come back Thursday.

How stupid is that ???? ????

Not stupid at all considering 3 months goes against manufacturers advice of 6 months.
