39 people died and 362 others were injured in 362 road accidents nationwide on Wednesday, the first of the “Seven Dangerous Days”, as declared by the Thai Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

 

Boontham Lertsukheekasem, the department chief, said today (Thursday) that the major cause of the road accidents was speed, accounting for 34.6%, followed by drunk driving, which accounted for 23.8%.

 

81.3% of the accidents involved motorcycles. 83.9% of the accidents took place on straight roads, 36.8% on roads under the supervision of the Highways Department and 34.6% on secondary roads in villages. Most of the accidents occurred between 3pm and 6pm.

So really is should be "the seven slightly less dangerous than normal days."

I am looking at buying a car at least it appears to be some added protection..  I really like M/B riding but it just seems increased risk here.

On the first day of christmas , my Khun Prayut give to me.....

Ridiculous to think that Thai road deaths this year will be more than 2 years of Thailand's pandemic deaths ! 

 

It's the equivalent death count of like 7  9/11 attacks a year !!

 

 

 

39 Killed in New Year Traffic Accidents

 

 

BANGKOK, Dec 30 (TNA) – Thirty-nine people were killed and 362 others injured when the government's road safety campaign for the New Year holiday started on Dec 29.

 

Boontham Lertsukekasem, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said there were 362 traffic accidents, 34.60% of which resulted from speeding and 23.80% drink-driving. Of all the accidents, 81.30% involved motorcycles.

 

The government set up 1,875 checkpoints and deployed 5,721 officials. They checked 360,412 vehicles and took legal action against 62,932 people. Of them, 18,142 did not wear a crash helmet and 7,939 did not fasten their seat belt.

It is the same every year so what is the use of commenting, the powers that be know what the problem is and until the RTP get their act together nothing will change, the Thai mind set is "It will be alright we can get away with this it doesn't apply to us" Plus the government belief that going through red lights or going the wrong way down a one-way street only warrants a minor offence together with three or more on a motorcycle or underage riding only gets a slap on the wrist NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE !!!!!

Good job Thailand.  Your country is still #1 on driving like a bunch of blind monkies!!  I will take my chances with Covid.  It's safer then driving on the Thai Roads!! 

Less than Monday and the checkpoints are useless if you see the stupid driving on the road. In a checkpoint everybody should be checked for driverslicense and do alcohol test instead of watching if you have the correct tax sticker. This week I was threatened by a driver a few meters after the checkpoint because I did not let him switch to the lane I was in. We stood still be thought apparently my lane was going faster. Passed the checkpoint he drove in front of me and braked and drove slowly to impress me. If he was really in such a hurry he better could drive instead of doing this stupid manoevre because now he lost more time

We all know that the police here, that are supposed to protect their citizens on the roads are useless, they don't care, we all see them day in day out, watching all the rules broken and this is the result, and of course the Thai's say; Kop Koon Krup, instead of being outraged.

 

It beggars belief.  

 

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation exist only it seems to pronounce staistics and clearly their Job title is not doing anything about the Disastes which infold yearly. As for the RTP well nuff said, working to protect the Public it seems is a Work Ethic NOT TAUGHT to them !

I do not see one post above yours that someone as said they are a better driver than a Thai and yes the old arguments will come out because the same Government announcements come out every year without improvements. You could inform people, who you call uniformed, rather then prodding to get a reaction.

I love their accurate statistics, to one decimal point ! They are for accidents that happen up to 6pm, so a lot of people must be up all night sorting out accident reports from all over the country. Never believe any Thai statistics that you read, they love making up numbers. Just look at TAT, They are the best.

I have 2 motorcycles and a old car that I use for shopping. When you are over 70 the increased risk doesn't come into play, only the enjoyment you get from riding.

Pity the Government does not take traffic deaths seriously. If they put half the efforts in trying to control traffic fatalities as  they have in trying to  stop Covid it would help but unfortunately  drink driving is part of Thai culture and cannot be blamed on foreign tourists

Very, very few of the deaths involve foreigners. As long as Thais only kill themselves I really don't care. They don't, so why should I? Their country, their culture, their police force. Up to them.

On Thai roads, most years have 365 dangerous days, while some years have even 366 dangerous days.

yesterday saw an old foreign bloke after a crash on a small motorbike with blood pouring out of his head due to him not wearing a helmet.  On the railway line road in Hua Hin.

Congratulations mate!  Enjoy your injury!  I hope the insurance does not pay you due to your stupidity for not wearing a helmet!

Same applies to the rest of you who dont wear a helmet.

He wasn't in a hurry. It was all about "face". He is a superior Thai, and you are just a lowly dirty farang and have no business driving in his country! Whatever happened is your fault!!!

Correct.  There are always less fatalities during the holidays due to the congestion and slower traffic.
