It should have been an occasion of soaring national pride as Thai badminton champions enjoyed the crowning success of their career. Instead, Thai viewers watched in embarrassment recently as the national flag was banned at the world championship victory ceremony for the Kingdom’s No 1 mixed doubles duo.

Patriotic fans were frustrated and angered by the embarrassing scene, blaming the government for a ban that has damaged Thailand’s standing in the sporting world.

Lamenting the “shame” caused to the nation, critics and opposition politicians demanded urgent action from the government.

Doping is rife and testing positive has earned Thailand a deserved ban on the international sports scene. However, Athletes are participating as individuals, as partners, or as individual teams and not under a Thai Banner.  It is the Athletes who should be recognized and not the country they come from.  The country is not recognized because of the doping kerfuffle that they have done nothing about for years. How hard is that to understand Thailand.

Probably don't care much as there is no direct money accumulation involved.  The boost would be Thailand hosting the Olympics, build arenas, a "sports tourist" infrastructure, etc.  Hell, there is already loads of hotels.  But with their rep for monkey business fuggetabou....

My guess is LOS is taking an interest in badminton because neighboring Malaysia won silver in it in 2008.

The ban is for a technical delay of the new code inclusion in existing provision.

Doping provisions, they failed to do what was needed to update the newest doping regulations. Therefore many Athletes had used now banned substances. Doping is doping.

WADA regularly updates its code to keep up with latest performance-enhancing substances, and signatory countries – Thailand included – are required to comply with the new rules either through their anti-doping regulations or the country’s laws.

'Thailand is facing embarrassment on the sporting world stage? - Thais don't get embarrassed;  though they are ultra-sensitive to criticism; suggesting a Thai is a bad driver may well result in your death at the next set of lights.

Cricket anyone?

From linked article

“The flag ban was imposed in early October by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), as punishment for Thailand’s failure to fully implement the global anti-doping code.

Along with Indonesia and North Korea, Thailand also lost the right to host major international sporting events for the duration of the one-year ban.”

If they are banned from hosting international events how can the hold this event?

“In fact, Thai authorities anticipate the Kingdom will be reinstated before it hosts the 2022 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in March. If not, Thailand faces the embarrassment of hosting a major tournament without being able to fly its national flag.”

Don't worry, Thai fans. Whatever sport Thailand may be good ???? at, there are ZERO Americans watching the event or heard about it, let alone give a rat's ass about it. There is a big neighboring country in your part of the world that's making a donkey's rear end of themselves EVERY day and your embarrassment registers in no one's radar.

Well I enjoy watching, and used to enjoy playing, cricket.

But I do rather understand those not enthusiastic about the game, needing to be stoned out of their minds to watch it...

from the article:

Thai authorities had promised WADA they would comply with its new code by January, Wissanu said. Any delay could cause more than Bt50 billion in economic damage to Thailand, he added.

Well, then you all better comply by tomorrow, huh?

Wrong on every point. Thais do get embarrassed. As for your  last sentence: it's an unsubstantiated silly statement in line with knee jerk Thai bashing which is another form of racism. Let's be clear. What you say is a lie. Nobody has been killed at  traffic light as a result  of being criticised. Yes road rage exists in Thailand  and many other countries where serious injuries  and fatalities  are not rare including the USA and the UK.

Who really give a rat’s ass whether Americans are watching Thailand sport best. Sports like Badminton, football, volleyball and recent Olympic successes brought happiness and galvanized the Thai people. Regional countries have lots of respect for Thailand sporting achievements and really not much for American sports.

You better read up on news stories.  Many shot at lights after an altercation or a chase down the road....

Just wait until Lying is an Olympic event or rug dealing?

I have noticed some very good ping pong ball players at Patpong Night Market.? ????

Rather a shame the Chinese flag cannot be banned due 5 million plus and growing  covid deaths

Thailand  was considered one of the top 6 countries  in the world  for it containment of Covid. And in terms of death  is far superior  to the USA or UK.

Their failure was lack of economic support for their poor and their  vaccine  roll out was slow.

Perhaps Thailand's Sports" reputation is being tainted  by failure to buy into the  latest "chemical enhancements" that as yet are  not on a list of banned substances ?

It is getting close to the situation where the differentiation in recorded times etc are in excess of the capacity to determine ! Ridiculous but yet again a point not of pride as much as a claim to financial reward. In terms of  "professional "sports and the  bogus  claims for inclusion in Olympic  events is hilarious ! e.g Water  Ballet? Will hormone enhancement to provide spleen enlargement as a facet in ability to  hold the breath  be outlawed or adopted ?

What I said is a joke, which you have misinterpreted.  I have been brainwashed by my Thai wife who warned me daily of the dangers of sounding my horn at the thousands of poor Thai drivers I encounter almost daily. I  know personally one case of violence at traffic lights; a Thai male offered fisticuffs claiming I was preventing him speeding because I was in the outside lane driving at the speed limit. My wife lied claiming I was taking her to hospital. This prevented a nasty incident and the hospitalisation of my would-be assailant who was six inches shorter than me and 20 kilos lighter.

Are you also aware that most taxi drivers carry some form of weaponry?  I admit I am racist when I say Thai drivers are the 2nd worst in the World; Thai police are the most inept I have experienced in my 79 years; Thai generals should not be running a country; Thai women are among the most beautiful on the earth.
