National – The Thai Ministry of Public Health urged the public to refrain from drinking alcohol, visiting poorly ventilated areas, and doing other risky activities to help reduce the spread of the Covid-19 Omicron variant.

Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health, stated late this week that the number of cases of Covid-19 in Thailand has increased significantly after the New Year holidays as predicted.

Although the Omicron variant appeared to be less severe than the Delta variant according to Opas, people with prior health conditions were considered as being in an at-risk group.

Nonense.. I am wondering when Thailand will grow up. Alcohol, cofee, tea, softdrinks it doesn't matter what you drink, but you have to act responsible

I'm waiting for the day we hear "Omicron:  Public Encourages Government to Stop Being Corrupt."  I mean, which is worse?  Alcohol or flagrant bribery?

Omicron shouldn't be considered in the same sentence as Covid. Thailand should hope people get Omicron; especially hope the unvacinnated get Omicron. If you survived a sescond Covid-19 shot then you pretty much know what Omicron does to you. Plus you get antibodies with the Omicron.

Agreed, but they don’t want everyone to get it all at once because it can overwhelm hospitals and cripple the economy because of people being off sick. If it’s spread out over a few months, it could be the best thing that could have happened. I hope they can manage this without any heavy handed lockdowns that will cause even more economic misery.

Well, while bribes don't hurt your liver, corruption in my view harms far more people in Thailand than alcohol.  My point is that the citizens are lectured constantly how to live their lives by people no better than them and who are beset by their own foibles.  Maybe they should just get their own house in order and mind their own business.

I hate Anutin, and all the fake politicians, but in all his stupidity he does have a point. Drunken people drop their guard, and 'social drinking' is the opposite of social distancing. HOWEVER....

- he's a hypocrite of the highest degree

- asking people to refrain is a waste of time because anyone who would listen to him and obey is the type of person who doesn't go to pubs anyway

- a drink at dinner with family or at home is no different to not drinking, when sat with these same people.

So although there is some sense in this, when it's from his ugly mouth and into the ears of the type of people who are still mixing with strangers while drunk.... it's a waste of breath & noise.

No relationship between drinking alchol and Covid. Its the environment and disregard by the few who cause the spread of virus. Have large gatherings for "FESTIVE" occasions is ok just dont drink alchol.

He is right.... recently saw some pics from Treetown and all of those drinking were not wearing masks....drinking alcohol obviously makes people do stupid things!

So shut down every dry/wet market in Thailand then... there's more chance of me getting infected when I go shopping than if I went for a beer.

Man, I love drinking. As a teacher it's a requirement. You know what we gotta deal with.

Every Monday morning you should hear the talk in the office. Oh, how wasted they got, how many bottles. The whiskey, the beer. And before you jump to conclusions and imagine those farang backpacker "teachers" who just came for an extended holiday, nope. These are mostly the older female, veteran Thai teachers heh. They sure like to put em away. "Kin bia, kin lao, mau mau".

Probably not......

Markets are a necessity for many as the only place they can get food.

Yes as PREDICTED. The Holidays were allowed to go ahead and now I hear that the local government hospital on Koh Chang is full, thanks a lot Prayout, it may have given people a chance to earn some money, and it was good to see some life back on the Island but was it really worth it ?

Once again the ridiculous obsession with alcohol. Zero evidence from Omicron ridden countries that alcohol has anything to do with the spread.

Making restaurants stop serving at 2100 is counterproductive as more people cram in earlier.

Nobody has stopped Omicron and these irritating and economically damaging measures will just prolong the pain

Which region in Chonburi was the first to exhibit rapid rise in Covid cases recently?

Thai government. World leaders.... But seriously do they know how stupid they are? Do they actually realise that most sensible people regard them as a complete joke.
