Thai EV forums are talking about a substantial price cut for the Nissan Leaf in Thailand. I am not sure that the rumors are true as the official website is still quoting the original price, but with the new model Nissan Ariya coming to the market soon it does make sense to clear the old stock.

In 2018 I attended the Bangkok motor show to look for an EV. Back then choices were limited but the Nissan Leaf was available. At 2 million Baht it was twice the price of the same car in Europe or America and even then I was not impressed with the specs. A 40kWh battery is small compared to most EVs. CHAdeMO charging connectors are a rare site at public charging stations.  No active cooling of the battery pack when the car was going to be used in the tropics!  Inside the car looked dated with the CD radio, it looked more like a Suzuki Swift than a modern EV. In 2019 MG released the ZS EV and after a test drive I put down a deposit on that instead.

 

So if the price reduction is real, does the Leaf make a good value choice? In my option, no. You would better off buying an MG EP with your one million Baht.

Both better spec'd, so choice would be easy for most folks.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure all the DC (rapid) chargers that I've used in Thailand have had the CHAdeMO plug.

Just did a search for CHAdeMO in my province and found none.

Maybe more common on older chargers around BKK

Leaf is outdated because of the two reasons that you mentioned:

no active thermal management of the battery 

ChaDeMo charging plug which is a dying concept

 

Definitely not recommended to buy, even for this cheap price

One manufacturer we have not talked about much here in EVs in Thailand is Mercedes Benz. So when a dealership brought cars to my local Robinson I asked the dealership owner about what EQ cars he had - none!

 

 

To understand EVs from MB it is best to look at the UK website. EQ means electric and cars range from A to X ascending in price.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Currently MB imports some whole cars and assembles some in Thailand, however MB is building a factory to Manufacture EVs in Thailand, but for some reason they have decided to start with EQS

I watched the one hour launch event so you guys didn't have to. Was hoping for an official announcement of which BYD cars were coming to Thailand, but we didn't get to see any cars. Seemed to be more a launch of the official distributor BYD REVER. They did say that they will open 30 dealerships this year  - but didn't say where, so probably mostly Bangkok based.

A mini ev that sells for anywhere from $4200 to $5000 in China is now being manufactured in Indonesia. Unlike the original version, this one comes with right hand drive. It has a range of 200 to 300 kilometers. I wonder if it will be coming to Thailand. And, of course, what it will cost.

Not quite sure you do, entirely.  Plenty of Supply & Demand, but seems PEA & govt don't want them to meet each other.

 

I know a few people with EVs.  Seems those smart enough to realize the advantage of owning, are just as savvy with their energy choices.  They all have or are going solar.

 

Same with a few on the forum, inclusive.  Having EVs & solar.  So with that in mind, many EV users are actually allowing more grid energy to be available for the ignorant folks that don't have EVs or solar.

 

If PEA would accept the excess solar users are generating, in a few years, all residential homes could have free electric.   I generate 3X during the day what I use overnight, and that's during now, rainy season, where the sun for past 2 weeks is lucky to make an appearance for more than 2 hrs a day.

 

That will probably triple after rainy season, and it all goes to waste, since not utilized on the grid.

Apparently.  Just the money saved on owning an EV over the warranty period would pay for a nice solar system, and installed at that.  That's just the petrol cost savings alone, over 8 yrs/180k kms.

Currently my solar system produces more power than I can use most months but due to PEA’s stupid rules I am not allowed to sell my power back to the grid.

 

New MGs and BYDs come with V2L which would give even more people the opportunity to share power back at times of peak demand helping to flatten the demand curve. 

 

Also remember that the more EVs there are in Thailand the cheaper fossil fuels will be.

Well, I too object to this over-generalized statement.
There are many who are either trained in a different field or find it challenging funding a solar generated power system or locating a competent contractor.

I reside in Buriram and have the means and ample (sunny) space for financing a high capacity solar system but don't have the know-how. I would love to have a  solar system charging my future electric vehicle and air condition units. Lucky to them who are blessed with this knowledge. Some of course have engaged a competent contractor procuring and installing a solar system alas they don't divulge contact details.
There is no need boasting about the advantages of a solar system or how much one could sell to PEA over-produced power, most of us know - it just bloody frustrating for not able to jump into the boat!

You could use my installer, though if needing a service call, might be a day or 3 longer than you'd want, since based in Hua Hin.  But they will install countrywide, I think.  His very first installation was on Samui, I think.

 

A few have PM'd for info and I've asked if he'd install, and answered yes to all inquiries.  But those asking have been understandably leery of going forward, because not local, JIC.
