Naew Na Thai Caption: Nine in hospital - after smoking ganja and eating som tam

Naew Na reported yesterday that in the first 11 days since legalization of marijuana nine people had been treated at three Bangkok hospitals after smoking weed, and having it in som tam (Papaya salad), cookies and coffee.

Dr Manas Phothaporn said the cases were at Ratchathewi, Lertsin and Nopparat Rajathanee hospitals.

There were six cases on Thursday 16th, one week after legalization, at Ratchathewi (4) and Nopparat (2).

The person who had been smoking didn't want to give their name because they feared arrest for recreational use.

They were told they wouldn't be arrested, they would be helped.

Dr Manas said that people who should avoid ganja are heart and respiratory patients, those with underlying health conditions, children, pregnant or breastfeeding women and women intending to try and get pregnant.

He thought the cases of problems of people ingesting the drug would go down as people understand more about the effects and are better educated.

He recommended calling 1165.

  • Thai's appear to be going backwards, thirty odd years ago the Thai food sellers knew how much Ganja into soups how come they have forgotten or are these stories being fabricated .................LOL

  • Weed causes increased paranoia and heart rate increase that mix, may be the reason for some of these cases.

  • And how many needed hospital treatment after smoking to many cigarettes or eating normal thai food?

And where are people going to get this understanding and education if not by ingesting it?

I admit I have no interest in trying it. Not by smoking or in my  food.

Weed cooked in soups or used raw in Som tam can not get you high!!!!

More bs stories.

I asked you once before if you have ever used Cannabis but you did not respond,

did you forget?

Yawn. Meanwhile at least nine people went to hospital yesterday after eating somtum, cookies and coffee.

Thais go to the doctor or take medicine after a rain shower makes them cough already, not surprised some weirdos are going crazy by taking way too much THC on the first time or the dose, which can cause you to feel quite nasty 1-2 hours.

I guess nobody explained them what needs to be done in such case, getting in some dextro tablets or drink a sports drink, sleep it out. There is a good reason Dutch coffeeshops always sell all those things, been trough this dozens of times with tourists ????

Weed never kills you but yeah these Thais eat it, likely eat a lot, impact takes longer and comes in much harder. When you smoke it most goes up into the air.

Why not? it can in cakes and they have been cooked at high temps. Last time I had it in a cake in the 80's I ended up across the road at the Samaritans office convinced the Police were after me, then I thought they had called the cops, never again!

I wonder how that compares to yesterdays road toll? ????

In the last eleven days how many people went to the hospital that do not drink or smoke tobacco products?  More or less than nine?

Different ways can be used to do this but this article explains it pretty good.

Load probably, and now the Weeds going to increase that. Put too much Ganja in a cake or Som Tam and you can kill someone. There needs to be education as to how much is too much and the different types of Mary Jane.

Personally I'd never touch the stuff, but everyone should have the Freedom to choose, same with ciggies or booze.

Interesting. So what is the lethal dose of ganga in a cake or in a bowl of somtam? Is a lethal dose of ganga even a real thing? If it were, would it fit in a bowl of somtam or cake?

Follow on Q, is ganga a "poison" like alcohol or nicotine? From that point you will find the answers to the 1st part about your somtam.

What a load of codswallop, people trying it for the first time, more likely anxiety attacks not knowing what to expect. Foolish naivety.

Amazing.....you can imagine folks who would usually not eat salad nor dream of sprinkling a bit of parsley on their food saying 'Heck yeah, put plenty of that there ganja in it'... and getting sick. :clap2:

To me it seems like irrelevant cannabis reporting is the new "covid" for the news outlets.

Since it has been relatively quiet about covid, they need a new scapegoat to produce headlines.

As others already commented, most food with "cannabis" (most likely it's the leaves which have zero effect) won't make you high or any noticeable effect.

Therefore those cases are either food poisoning, placebo effect or attention seeking hypochonder.

Education is key here. Yep you can eat it, and you can smoke it. The problem Marijuana dependency creeps up on you. 9% of users have a dependency disorder. People who begin using marijuana before the age of 18 are four to seven times more likely to develop a marijuana use disorder than adults* For alcohol dependency the figures are 6% **

But that means that over 90 of us use and enjoy booze and/or MJ without the problems.

So there needs to be a focus on keeping the kids off it same a ciggies and booze. Once you're old enough to make a choice then what you shove into your body is your personal choice.

I'm not against using it. Just want to make sure the benefits and dangers are part of the educational road map going forwards.

Thai CANNOT handle alcohol - what on earth makes the 'reasonable' smokers of weed on here think they can handle weed.

Put too much in a cake and kill some one?Really?

Imo if you have never used it you should not comment on the effects of it.

how can you know what it does?

You're missing the point. It's not about the Ganja poison, but the susceptibility of people with certain health conditions to it's affect plus the affect of your mind.

I used to know my safe level but I once had a Brownie at a friends  house that I found out had 10 times the normal amount I would normally take. I went on a Psychotic trip I will never forget.

Almost jumped to my death from a bridge. There needs to be some education on how much is too much. Don't touch it anymore myself.

Bunch of hooey, IMO. I smoked a lot In my youth and hung out with some folks who smoked even more. Nobody ever got ill.

It can happen, but usually due to underlying conditions. I believe the hospitalization rate in a French study of habitual users was on the order of just over one in a thousand, and more than half of those were psychiatric admissions.

If I could buy 100 baht worth at the local market I would bake some mild brownies. I have plenty of old timer aches and pains, but the odd Tramadol once in awhile keeps me mobile at about 90 baht per month.
