LONDON (AP) — U.K. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss cemented her place as front-runner in the race to replace Prime Minister Boris Johnson, winning endorsement Saturday from an influential former rival for the top job.

Tom Tugendhat, who was eliminated from the contest in earlier rounds of voting by Conservative lawmakers, said Truss had the “resolution, determination, and passion” to be prime minister.

The endorsement is a blow to ex-Treasury chief Rishi Sunak, the other finalist in the race for the next Conservative leader. The winner will be decided by votes from about 180,000 party members across the country.

Polls give Truss an edge with Tory members, though Sunak is more popular with the general public, who don’t have a say in the race. The winner will be announced Sept. 5 and will automatically become prime minister, replacing Johnson, who stepped down as Conservative leader this month after three years in office following months of ethics scandals.

Please, please, please tory membership, vote in truss. She will be a gift to the opposition.

She’s already bottled it and refused to take part in an interview with Andrew Neil…can’t take the pressure.

Opposition must be praying she wins.

Apropos of that, I think it was Hegel who remarked that world-historic personages appear twice. The first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.

I find it odd that the Tory party in Canada, in a smaller populated country, have 670k paying members, also voting right now for a new leader, and their U.K. brethren only 180k. The Conservative Party of Canada are the official opposition.

Well

A: Starmer is only one of the opposition’s leaders.

B: the tories electing truss as party leader won’t be a miracle, just an act of self destruction.

Let’s hope an early election is called before she does too much damage to the U.K. though.

Oh truss’ ineptitude is going to <deleted> off plenty of people in the country if she gets the top job.

The opposition know this and I suspect are praying the tories are stupid enough to put her in place.

I spelled Starmer with a capital "S", because I am not an angry socialist trying to be childish, plus I was taught at school how and when to use a capital letter ...????

Excellent news for the opposition, dreadful news for the country.

Her tax plans will strip public services of the funds they need while driving up inflation.

The inevitable outcome will be increased interest rates hitting home buyers and all who are struggling with debt.

Not at all, I’m basing my comments on those of Liz Truss’ own economic guru, Prof. Patrick Minford.

Apropos of that, I think it was Hegel who remarked that world-historic personages appear twice. The first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.

Actually it was Karl Marx who said it, although he did say it in reference to Hegel.

The actual words (in translation) are:

Quote

Hegel remarks somewhere that all great world-historic facts and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.
