Some members like a comment, or they don't like it - how can we tell now?

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

I don't want to start another thread about the missing reaction icons, but I would really like to know how members should now be able to judge how many other members like their comments and how many dislike it.

In general, I like to participate here because often it is fun, and it is communication with other farangs in Thailand. Sometimes I know my comments are controversial. But I don't know how controversial. Until a week ago or so maybe I had 5 "like" for a post and 1 negative reaction. Or maybe 10 negative reactions. I liked that, because that gave me an idea how many members here think similar to me and how many think differently. My aim, especially with controversial comments, is to see how many people, or more precisely which percentage, disagree with me.

Now I might see that 1 or 5 or 10 agree. But I don't see if maybe 20 disagree. I would like to see how many people disagree to get a better idea about how popular some of my opinions are. It's not about being the most popular, it's about getting any feedback from others.

How should people react now? Should they reply: I am sad you wrote that?

It's a bit silly to take the options away ... I don't post that much but sometimes when I do they get a bit obscure..I don't mind getting the odd sad or confused face .. better than no feedback.

I've wanted to give someone a smile because it's funny but now I have to give a love heart which doesn't seem to fit.

For the political posts I have noted some from the Trump side continually give Democrat leaning posts confused faces, but it's all a bit of fun, and it doesn't surprise me if Trump supporters are a bit confused.

I may be wrong here but didn't the total reputation include both likes and dislikes? If so I always thought that made the number a little irrelevant?

Agreed however there should be the opportunity to simply dislike/disagree without having to post.

The point may be that they want more and more posts to generate interest. So if you disagree you can't just give a confused or sad face but have to post. More posts.. more traffic .. more revenue I suppose.

Why would you bother not liking a comment.  I never do or have.

Just move on to the next post.

This is probably why the dislike was removed.

At times I felt like I was being stalked by members with their stupid reactions, confused was the most annoying, why not ask for more information or an explanation instead of a negative emoji.

I do miss the laugh reaction, I regularly read funny comments from members.

Lots of clever members here with funny replies, they always give me a lift after reading all the moaning and negativity.

Like I wrote above, for my own posts I like to know how people perceive them.

So when I read something which is stupid and/or makes no sense then I react accordingly.

I.e. today there is a post from someone who thinks about buying a condominium which he might want to use in 14 years for himself.

I am sure a week or two ago he would have received lots of confusing or sad reactions, and he could have seen with one view that this is probably not a good idea.

Now members can like it, or they can write comments, or do nothing. I think that makes this forum less functional than it was previously.

Like I wrote above......ask a question for clarification or explanation.

Some members would prefer to reply to a question than receive a negative reaction.

I agree that there needs to be "negative" reactions as well as positive. People often share information that is factually incorrect, and with negative reactions you can instantly spot if there's something amiss with a comment, even if you don't immediately realize it yourself by reading it. When dealing with immigration matters, it's incredibly important that you don't act on incorrect information, as that might leave you in hot water.

The current system should honestly just be replaced with a thumbs up and thumbs down.

That is probably why they have done it so as to increase the number of posts.

I strongly believe that the removal of confused and laugh is totally wrong.  Just because others misuse the functions should not result in a total ban for all.

I agree.

But let's also keep in mind that these online forums don't have fixed rules and even if they would have such rules many people would ignore them.

I.e. is there a clear rule when I am allowed to use "sad"? Should I use it when there is a story about someone who died? Or for a comment where the user clearly has no idea what he writes about? Or when someone tells us about his new girl who is different?

Who cares, let's just use those reactions how we like to use them. I am not going to complain if I see lots of confused or sad icons. It's not important.

Crazy situation.

Someone dies and we cannot post a sad emoji.

No way can we post a like or thanks!

I have stopped using them.

There is no point in only being able to like things - waste of time now.

One of the major functionalities of a forum has been removed!

I agree and I see little point in starting topics, except for specific advice, if there is no quick feedback.

It's the squeaky wheel that gets the oil.

AN Mods must get fed up with the complainers.

Probably had no choice, removing these reactions shuts up the whinging and whining.

It's like You Tube now. Can't give a dislike or thumbs down...we can't give a sad emoji.

Seems nobody can take negative criticism these days.  We don't want them to have a nervous meltdown or commit suicide if they get people disliking their dumb or racist / homophobic / sexist posts now do we?

Let's all be happy and simple and pretend we live in jolly pixy land.

No I am feeling much better there no one on here can give me a confided or sad emoji.  Bruh!

There are two easy solutions:

a) ignore the complainers

b) ban them

It's not that they would go to court and complain. This is still Thailand.

I think that they've been ignoring the complainers for ages, it's probably the 'squeaky wheel' that broke them.

I reckon being an AN moderator would be the toughest job on the planet. Trying to please everyone, impossible task.

I do miss the laugh reaction, why on earth would they remove that one.

Not any more.

I just looked up myself under reputation and it is either like or thanks and nothing else.

Taking the other emoticons off will have a long term knock on effect that I suspect nobody thought about?

So, moderators, can we have them back, pretty please.

Alternatively, as in a democratic society, can we have a vote or a poll please?

:shock1::offtopic::huh::guitar:  There that should make others happy

Perhaps the solution to this horrible conundrum is seeking validation elsewhere.

It is just another example of how in society we are removing all negative or critical feedback. It keeps everybody happily mediocre.

No, its to stop people abusing the emojis by just laughing at posts (which is just plain rude) , you can still write and reply in a negative and critical way .

Its much better when people reply with words, rather than just replying with a facial expression
