The photo that raised a ruckus. The Thai headline asks, “Khmer desert?!” Photos: Amarin TV

THAI netizens got annoyed after British Ambassador to Cambodia Dominic Williams posted a photo on his Facebook page with the caption saying “Khmer dessert” but what was shown is known to be Thai dessert, Amarin TV said today (Mar. 1).

In this photo are some delicious Thai desserts including Luk chup, which is Thai mung bean marzipan; Taco, a Thai pudding topped with coconut; Med Kanun, golden jackfruit seeds; and Tong Yip, a flower egg yolk tart, and Tong Yord, round egg yolk tart.

Thai netizens moved in full force to inform the British Ambassador with one pointing out that it was Maria Guyomar de Pina, known among Thais as Thao Thong Kip Ma, who introduced some deserts to the Siamese cuisine at the Ayutthaya court with a few of her dishes being influenced by Portuguese cuisine, especially egg yolk-based sweets such as Foi Thong, or golden threads, and Sangkhaya, a custard.

So, this has firmly been established about  netizens: 1. They are some of the most petty people on earth.  2. They have way, way too much time on their hands and do not appear to be working

The difference is the Thai eat a few bites. Westerners seem to need the full plate.

So, he would have been more accurate calling it Portuguese dessert. Sure they would have loved that. ????

If Thais put half as much energy into other things as they do with obsessing about food and trying to boost their self-esteem by claiming the invention and "cultural significance" of various things, they would be world beaters. Much like a braggard who proclaims any minor achievement as a major victory, I see it as an admission of weakness and lack of self-confidence. They would be better served looking forwards, not backwards.

I note in the article, the Ambassador seems to have pulled down the post. Whilst I do not have expertise in Khmer cuisine, it would not surprise me if these dishes were popular and prevalent there, so I think it's fairly gutless to roll-over for a few over-zealous Thai netizens.

difference being most cultures would be proud to admit it. thailand bawks at anything mentioning thailand not being the center of the universe and the beginner of all culture in the area.

take the muay thai for example. kinda not thai at all.

there was numerous links in a forum a few weeks back showing all of this. its quite in depth and shows just how much was borrowed and claimed to be their own.

Is this "news" even worth its use of "ink"? :-)

People get "enraged" so very easily nowadays...

One could argue that most Thai "originality" derives from elsewhere -

It's all about the distractions - worthy or not.

As are the other items of random, sensationalized, gossipy, tabloid-like info that passes for news and pushed continuously.

So, this has firmly been established about  netizens:

1. They are some of the most petty people on earth.

2. They have way, way too much time on their hands and do not appear to be working hard enough.

3. Their skin is thinner than tissue paper.

4. These so called netizens find the most ridiculous things to fume about. Perhaps they should get a life?

THAI netizens Fuming, Snowflake alert. :coffee1:

I also suspect that these netizen types are not numerous or influential. Kind of a made up term.

Great percentage of everyday folks don't consider such things.

"made up" being the key - ie stolen from others and re-branded as Thai, nearly everything "Thai" has come from Khmer, India, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Burma etc.

You'll be making some keen Thai enemies with such statements -

As it's well known that Thai is the centre of most everything Southeast Asian.

Must be a slow day news wise to print a story of Thai people getting worked up over a photo taken of a fruit dessert

Brouhaha of the year

Endless drama and brawls. Thankfully i'm returning to Germany for good later this year. Sorely missing the peace and quiet of my Dorf in Rheinland Pfalz.
