Russian what?  Refugees? Are you kidding?

A good part might be relatives and friends of oligarchs and other powerful figures in Russia, to some degree supporting the regime or tolerating it. I could accept them only if they are truly dissidents. Otherwise I would not call them refugees.

Authorites are just figuring it now ? I believe the 1st Russian aircraft arrival in October had a 2 truck water cannon welcoming.........I'm sure if Immigration clamps down on corruption, most will have to leave at some point ????

Well no, I don't entirely agree that they are this, that or the other.

Plus, same every year. Refugees from winter, maybe, like a million other tourists. They'll return to their homeland, eventually.  But calling them refugees from the war in Ukraine is deeply offensive surely to the 6 million or so Ukrainian people forced from their homes, to flee their country in the depths of winter, on account of the brutal Russian invasion of their country.

 

But, economic migrants, political refugees, anyone expressing anti war sentiments or opinions, and a million others, yes. they might be termed refugees, from their own government's persecution and disastrous policies, if nothing else. Unfortunately, hiding inside these groups will be the groups you mention. So I think it's really a mixture of people. Can't call them all bad! But Bali might be a lesson for eg Phuket.

 

BTW, what pact, and what extradition treaty does the OP article mention? We seem to have come in on a previous article.

All the young Russians that have escaped the front-line have to make money to fund their stay in Thailand... just how do you think they're going to do that?

No marriage visa, no retirement visa, no work permit and limited funds?

Russians will do what Russians do, turn to crime to make money.

You could say that about a whole host of immigrants. But many have technical skills, programming skills, etc. There has been a huge uptake in ed visas I believe. Also, a lot are bringing wealth with them, coin, or whatever. It's not just here in Thailand, which didn't even rate a mention as a destination. It's a global phenomenon if you read the link I posted.

The Russian society is split over this. A lot of people, especially the younger generation, oppose the war, some even go to jail for openly expressing their views. On the other hand, a lot of people support the war and believe the propaganda.

Not looking good is it......reality is not one bullet has been fired on Russian soil, so all they are avoiding is conscription. Not the usual reason to try and claim asylum.

"The 1951 Refugee Convention is a key legal document and defines a refugee as:

“someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.”"

 

Draft dodging would seem to imply opposing the war. Is that not 'membership of a particular social group' with 'a political opinion'?

Already saw some reporting that Thailand is reconsidering the Visa / Visa waiver arrangements they have with Russia (and Ukraine) as the numbers arriving are very high already.
