If you witnessed a man beating a woman to a pulp in public, would you intervene?

i thoight of posting this as I witnssed something similar not too long ago.

a thai man was beating his wife up in our apartment building near the stairs

 

and yes i did get involved.

he was drunk, skinny and looked like a thug.

if his wife hadnt told me to not worry about it I may have given him a dig

 

how about you blokes?

would you lot get involved to save the poor damsel in distress or would you let the scumbag husband/boyfirned or whatever beat her like a rug in public?

The general answer is .. keep your nose out however, that may not sit well with your conscious.

 

You don't know the whole domestic situation, maybe you go to give him a dig and he pulls out a knife or gun - also, you are a guest here, you are on rocky ground with the police  if you start brawling in the street - leave it to a local to sort out.

Yes you are right,even the woman may turn on you if you hurt her beloved husband.

Walk away,this is Thailand and there are different rules here.

Probably I would get "involved" by telling the security guards or the management or the police.

 

I wouldn't try to stop such a guy. The reason is that he must be crazy or drugged or drunk to beat her up in public. And people like that are not rational. Telling them to stop won't stop them. And the bad guy might have a knife or a gun or he just uses the next bottle to fight.

 

I think the question is: Am I willing to risk my own health and maybe life to try to break up a fight? And if I am willing to do that, am I able to do that? For me personally the answers are No and No.

If you have to, then do it.

But don't be surprised if you get hurt or end up being arrested by the police.

Depending on situation and location. 

 

I have been a security guard in my younger days, and we got involved in couple fights and wife abuse and beating once and awhile, and with an uniform it is a totally different story, as well being young and fit. 

 

Another important factor, be sure she whants you help, and do not attack you as well, that happens quite often when you get involved in situations like this, and last do not use excessive force or loose your temper. If you are not sure you can control the situation, get back up, or try to to talk them out of the situation instead of physically get involved.

I'm not really a fighter, but would do what I could to distract him. Not here, but back in my home country this year, there was a man pulling a woman down the middle of the road with a rope (turned out to be his mother). I got him to stop and only came at me once when he saw I was calling the police.

Dunno about involved in actual fighting just hands on separation,  intervened twice once in a soi and once in a restaurant.

 

I cannot ignore it, it's just who I am I cannot not do something.

Are you Bob or Bogs. Bob used that photo the other day in a post. I feel sometimes you can look someone in they eye and sense if they are a real threat. But best to be careful and let police do their thing.

Then I have the greatest of respect for you, however, you didn't mention "say something" you inferred that you would physically intervene. I would put my own personal safety and my permission to stay here before physical intervention.

 

Nothing wrong with telling him to stop or similar - nothing wrong with shouting to the local Moto taxis / security guard to come and sort it.

I don't think anyone could really know for sure what they would actually do. Personally, I'm a very instinctive person & upon seeing this, my adrenaline would probably kick in & i would follow my instincts & jump in to try & defuse the situation.

 

As a general rule though, try not to get involved when 2 Thais are having any kind of domestic altercation.

While living in China I saw many men beating their women in public almost on a daily occasion. I was told by a close Chinese friend (female) not to get involved as it probably wouldn't be good for me.

 

And here in Thailand I was told pretty much the same thing from a close Thai friend (male) during one of my first trips here well over 20 years ago. Matter of fact he had even told me not to provide aide to any Thai I saw injured in an accident even though I was certified in CPR at the time. He informed me that if I touched the injured person and they became disabled or even died because of the accident that their family might say it was my fault and sue me.

If he doesn't look like a muay thai fighter and the girl seems really hurt, I might just find a brick and hit him on his head. Joking of course, I will land in jail and the girlfriend will then hate me.

 

Usually these couples and people deserve each other anyway. She will just stay with the guy too.

As someone pointed out, the woman might turn on you too, not to mention neighbours, etc. Interfering as a foreigner in this part of the world may not be met with appreciation, not even by the woman...
