Even if he did, it's still not OK for a gang of people to attack someone.   Quite sad that this is all it takes for a literal mob of people to almost kill someone.

So he got beat up for nothing by a shopkeeper? Is this your theory?

My theory is that violent criminals should be in jail.

As a Finnish person, I don't doubt the person cursing the ground under his feet, but whether that is cause for violence - I'd go with a hard no - no matter how many words he uttered.

Agreed. Absolutely no justification, and the thugs should go to jail.

My theory is that this has long been brewing, with words exchanged over time. Still no justification to, cowardly, beat someone up.

go work on uncle somchais farm.

How hard is it to pour a drink?

Something smells?

I wonder what ever happen to Mai pen Rai?

If he disrespectful I've seen worse from Thais and even foreigners I've not seen any rat pack open a can of whip ass on all my years living here.

Shop owner account smells on two front,  60 baht whiskey not alot of foreigners buy rock gut Thai liquor

then the husband grabbing the knife but didn't use the sharp end? If that was true husband should have cuts on his hand.

In a melee pretty hard pretty tough to pick and chose in your attack?

Millions of farangs in Thailand. One guy gets beat up = all Thais are bad.

In depth thinking.

This incident is a perfect example of why you should never move to her village.

I haven't met a Thai yet that didn't understand 'buffalo' or '<deleted>*k You'. They even understand body language and remember you were drunk and abusive in the past.

Read the whole article before commenting.

There's always two sides of each coin. If people act normal, this would never happen in Thailand. Never.

So, I believe the shop owner to a certain extent.

However, when chaos erupted, the guy didn't broke his jaw falling down.

More likely he was beaten by a group of drunken Thais, "celebrating" Songkran.

He managed to fly back to Finland quickly, so he's not as stupid as he acted. Karma is a bitch.

The name of article, ridiculous. Also the content, compared to the linked story.

Seems the Finnish guy had an attitude problem, according one story.

Other story, the Finnish guy is an "angel"

Im more willing to believe the first story, but could be wrong.

i love alcohol.

it brings out people's true nature!

Yes that's true. My mother told me long ago, "what you say when you are drunk, you mean when you are sober."

If you read the whole article, you kind of understand why this happened. Same would happen in the US, in Europe or in any other Asian country.

Would happen anywhere in the world.

Finns are so direct it's rude here, same as Germans

thats ridiculous.

i would have given her $10 maximum because that is all they are worth.

If you want to pay 300 Baht , you will have to go back to the early  1980's

Almost kill someone, slight exaggeration there.

Thai’s having a very short fuse and were easily triggered ganging up on one person.

One of the facets of "Thainess" that really fascinates me.

So how many on here immediately blamed the Thai without being bothered to read the complete story in the OP link?

Uhm, perhaps cos she hit him on the head with a weapon and incited a lynching on him.

It does help to be courteous and respectful to the locals. And a smile and good cheer goes a long ways here.

They might have been drunk. Don´t mess up with drunk thai people.

Violence maybe be wrong , but people need to realise if they start for vociferously abuse people , when alcohol has been consumed and you are in the Countryside and you cannot speak the same language , the people that you abuse are quite likely to resort to violence

Good thing regular Thais don't read this forum.  If they did, more members here would be getting tuned-up like that Finn.

I was thinking the same thing just before I read your post.

"Jarae later came back to her shop and asked to buy a bottle of alcohol, but he only wanted to pay 60 baht instead of the 70 baht it cost."

Highly likely: she was doing the favorite local sport of charging the farang 10 baht more than the Thai price.

He knew he was being ripped off and treated with racism.

He screams buffalo and gets beaten by the pack.

"Thainess" is fascinating.

They tolerate and exhibit the shiftiest and most dishonest behavior, but if you use a curse word it's like you've broken all 10 commandments at once.

wow you sure seem to know a lot about exactly what happened...if you ever bother to read the op there are two versions of the story told...one by the finns wife and another by the shop owner....let me guess the guys wife version is going to be supportive of husband especially when trying to get a pay out....a lynching? You must have read a different version that the OP posted..... bottom line is IF the finn would have left when asked to leave and not come back looking for trouble that would have been the end of it....if you go looking for trouble you are likely to find it even in Thailand where the vast overwhelming majority of Thais are friendly people and are unlikely to bother any farang who behaves themselves.
