The “Stranded Foreigner without money” stories are getting to be a regular occurrence.  This causes people to become skeptical.  This person’s story could be true but how many stories like this are printed on a regular basis.

If she asks the US Embassy for help this will be the standard line:  1)Contact a relative or friend 2) The US Government can loan the money to get back home.  If the US Embassy actually loans an American Citizen money a notation is made on the passport.  This prevents the person from making an international trip until the loan is paid off.

And the Embassy will facilitate contacting people in the states.  If she really got the $10K transferred to her, the Embassy could work with her to get access.   The story is very suspect (I did not read all the postsP).  The local police, if involved, would contact the tourist police who would know how to interface with the Embassy to get her whatever assistance she needs to leave the country.

If she can show evidence of the $10,000 transfer, her plight could be genuine. Otherwise, it could be a scam.

I would have thought her most obvious get-out card would be to contact the US embassy.

Embassies no matter which are not there to bail out citizens who cannot control themselves......

If she's a druggie lock her up for a 20 stretch...????

One wonders if this is BS?

One wonders how she can afford to buy cannabis if she is "bankrupt"?

Why does your charitable contribution depend on four others doing so?     And, no, you definitely cannot count me in.

Let me put my joint down for a moment and enjoy the inhaled for a moment.

As I read the article again as earlier noted to another poster calling the person who wrote the story a journalist the reason for 5 pages of speculation cause nothing was answered.

What I got after a few more inhales from what was written by the so-called journalist she had money before she went bankrupted.

The person who is telling the story isn't the American herself but from someone associated from the Cannabis shop that supposedly know her story!   But provides no answers and the so call journalist and editor for the journalist don't seem to have a clue in obtaining answers leaving 3veryone to assume and speculations as soon as to whether the story is true or just s scam!

Maybe the guys are smoking their own product instead of selling it. ????

I assume the mistake was in translation: not $10K but rather mere THB10K ~about $300.

sometimes thais use word "coin" lien regarding greenback. that brings things in order. Otherwise yes, why she didn't just buy her a ticket?

Another question rises: do US Embassy in particular provide such service "loan4ticket"? What I know belgium emb. doesn't, polish no-no too, while the emb. of 5th republic does.

How convinient of you to see this woman as a "beggar" but have mercy with the family of a British/UK national who is in ICU at a Bangkok hospital after he/she crashed his/her motorbike, without wearing a helmet, adequate protection or even an insurance, without a proper driver license and asking/begging for money on "gofundme".

Whatever gave you the idea I have pity for anyone who gets himself/herself in a jam of their own doing? Ya got the wrong guy dude.

The us embassy does not support broke expats. No free airline tickets.

the most they would do is coordinate with family so could help her withdraw the funds.

Well. as the loadies say, "Weed will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no weed."

I used that quote a few times when I was younger and had both weed and money.   Then went through extended periods of hard times with no money and friends who shared weed.

As I found out, the during the times with money and no weed I was much better off than I was during the times with weed and no money!

That could work quite well around the world - great idea!

Maybe she can get herself deported for being unable to support herself financially and what about her return flight she must have had one to enter

Exactly, did she sell her return ticket?

Incorrect, the deportee pays for the police escort to the airport AND the flight. That is why there are so many longstayers in IDC, they can not afford the flight or escort.

You sure about that? Depends on the reason for deportation

Totally sure thanks.

(Being refused entry and the air carrier has to bear the cost ie no forward travel for a 30 day exempt entry - but that isn't deportation as you have not entered the country.)
