I've heard that the battery can swell and degrade if it's always at full power (an internal battery that is - if it's an external cartridge-type then you wouldn't notice). I believe the battery needs to cycle down regularly to stay healthy so leaving it always on is not a good idea. If you have an internal battery, I would open the case up to check it periodically - when they start swelling it looks scary.

To get the laptop out I have to remove the HDMI cable/Ethernet cable/USB cables etc etc etc... they all come in from the other side of the desk.

It is a pain in the ar se to simply press the ON/OFF button....

That is why I do not do it... do you not understand this ?

I think you need to re-route the cables to save yourself ALL that hassle. 

I do not understand anyone who finds pressing an ON/OFF button a PITA. Turn the PC on BEFORE you start the re-wiring.

Disconnect all the cables, extract the laptop to press on/off button... slide laptop back into crevice it hides in..... reconnect all the cables.

Not sure if you are hard of reading (or just baiting me into calling you a name you well deserve that will get me banned).

Sorry Ralf, but I just do not understand your problem. 

The laptop is on a shelf which slides in and out in order to access the keyboard, but you need to disconnect all the cables. Needs a re-think.

First post on this subject that I agree with. Despite good surge protection, one good thunderstorm can easily destroy mobiles or computers that are left on. Been there and learnt from it/

I guess it is just ingrained in me but I tend to switch off if even if going out for an hour or so and especially overnight. 

I leave mine on because I have scheduled tasks including antivirus scans and backups that run overnight.

I don't know anything about Mac's operating system, but windows always had (and still have) a problem with memory release of closed apps. The longer you keep it on, the slower it gets. I used a notebook. If I go away for a short time I put it in sleep mode. If longer such as overnight o put it on hibernate mode. But every now and then, when I feel it's getting slow I turn it off at night. As for restart after update - I don't usually do it as soon as an update is available, but pretty much when I want to turn it off anyway.

Yes, my apologies....  I didn't know a restart would fix all the problems. 

 

I wonder why my last restart didn't clear all the files out of my Recycle Bin?  Hmmmmmmmm..........

Two things concerning what the OP posted about; one I used to run a internet cafe that was open 24/7 and the work station PC was on 24/7 for weeks/months at a time; if when the power was cut I'd use that time to clean the insides and swap out fans, but there were times when it would run 24/7 for 3-4-5 months at a time without any problems.

 

Two; downloading "regular" (non-porn) movies off of PB is old style, nowadays there's plenty of websites that stream movies with a decent internet connection and a decent PC; give this site a try, yes there's a few pop-ups till you get to the movie/tv show you want but it beats waiting hours (days) for a download;

The purpose of the recycle bin is to be a holding place for deleted user files. You see, some people aren't perfect and delete files by accident. These can be recovered from the recycle bin if needed again.

 

A restart clears out temp files which are temporary system files created by programs as workspace while running. When the program is closed the temp files often hang around but they do nothing and just occupy space so removing them is quite a good idea.

 

A restart will not 'fix all the problems' but it does make the machine a bit more efficient. If you want to fix all the WIndows problems, use a different operating system.

Why ?

It is a Dell precision workstation laptop which is basically "hard wired" like a conventional PC, it is not "portable".... I have another laptop for that application and it sits on the desk when needed.

 

Not sure why people have such issue with how I have set-up my desk at home.

It has  10hr battery life, it does not require a UPS.

Agree with “Two” , streaming sites are plentiful, quick and full of content both new and old. I used torrent sites for a few years but don’t see a need now.

I use fmovies.to and find it excellent, episodes of current series are available the moment they are released, the same with movies.

 

I have flitted around trying different streaming sites as some work better than others and are also dependent on the browser you are using.
